Swarajati:

avanese traditional music, which includes classical vocal arts such as macapat and various traditional vocal repertoires like tembang, represents a rich and complex source of cultural knowledge. These traditional art forms not only display aesthetic qualities but also embody philosophical values and the worldview of the Javanese people. As such, Javanese traditional songs serve as a medium for transmitting identity and collective memory that continues to evolve from one generation to the next.

These traditional artistic expressions encompass musical practices, cosmology, instrument-making techniques, and social relations within ritual and performance contexts. Each component within them carries meanings and functions that are interconnected, forming a unified and holistic cultural system. The presence of Javanese traditional songs thus demonstrates that culture lives not only in physical forms but also in the knowledge and practices passed down through generations.

Accurate documentation and widespread dissemination of traditional artworks play an essential role in ensuring the continuity of this knowledge transmission. Documentation efforts can reach a wide range of audiences, including local communities who are the primary bearers of the culture as well as global audiences seeking to understand the richness of Javanese traditions. Therefore, the use of information technology and appropriate scholarly methods is necessary to preserve, sustain, and expand access to these musical knowledge resources.

However, many works and bodies of knowledge related to traditional Javanese songs remain undocumented in open and standardized formats. This lack of documentation is especially evident within Wikimedia projects, such as the scarcity of freely licensed photographs for public reference, the limited availability of accessible online audio or video recordings for learning purposes, and the incomplete data on repertoires and karawitan figures needed to strengthen informational connections on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. These conditions affect the openness of knowledge access, as the available information cannot yet be widely used for educational, research, or cultural promotion purposes in digital spaces. This situation creates a gap between the symbolic cultural recognition within society and the presence of public documentation that could support sustainable preservation through an open knowledge ecosystem.
Various empirical factors also threaten the continuity of traditional Javanese song knowledge. Changes in music education that shift toward formal curricula—often standardizing traditional practices—urbanization that reduces the number of tradition bearers, as well as pressures from globalization and commodification that alter the social functions of performances, are examples of tangible challenges. Ethnomusicology studies and cultural policy research emphasize that without systematic documentation strategies, cultural practices are highly vulnerable to knowledge loss and contextual shifts that erode their original meanings.

In addition, gaps persist in the availability of reusable documentation for researchers, educators, and cultural communities. Many audio and visual archives remain privately stored or accessible only in limited settings, resulting in underutilization in education and the development of open knowledge content. Freely licensed materials that can be shared through Wikimedia platforms also remain limited, preventing full support for cultural preservation campaigns based on open access.

Through the Swarajati Project, contributors take the initiative to document traditional Javanese song art more openly and systematically. In its initial phase, this project aims to document 30 Javanese songs in the form of audio recordings to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Each song entry will subsequently be linked to Wikidata and has the potential to be developed into referential articles on Wikipedia and other projects. This effort is expected not only to improve public access but also to serve as a meaningful contribution to the preservation and advancement of traditional Javanese culture in the digital realm.

Approach Strategy

Through the Swarajati Project, the initial step taken by contributors to support the preservation of traditional Javanese songs is to establish partnerships with institutions and communities that focus on karawitan arts. These partnerships serve as the foundation for gaining access to relevant repertoires and competent resource persons for data validation. In addition, the contributors conduct literature reviews and inventory reference sources to ensure that each selected song has a credible knowledge basis within the context of Javanese musicology.

Next, the team carries out the audio recording process for the gendhing pieces designated as documentation objects, involving local karawitan practitioners. The resulting recordings are then processed to meet the quality standards required for digital publication. Each audio file is uploaded to Wikimedia Commons under a free license and linked to relevant data items on Wikidata, including the gendhing title, tuning system, presentation structure, and its connections to other repertoires in the karawitan tradition.

We also organize workshops involving new contributors and student communities to introduce documentation practices and basic editing on Javanese Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. These activities aim to encourage public participation in the collaborative preservation of traditional Javanese songs while ensuring the sustainability of article development and the integration of cultural data within the open knowledge ecosystem.
Changes
Javanese Wikipedia.

The changes we envision include the availability of digital documentation of Javanese traditional songs—along with their cultural context, lyrics, social functions, and recordings—which can be openly accessed under a free license. In addition, we aim to increase the number of new contributors who regularly edit the Javanese Wikipedia, accompanied by strengthened skills in accurately documenting and editing musical data according to established standards. In this way, the documentation can be utilized by various parties, including researchers, artists, and other contributors, in the development of Wikimedia projects related to the preservation of Javanese musical heritage.
