Tajik Wikimedians User Group/Photographic Expedition to Iskanderkul for Wiki Loves Earth 2025 (Tajikistan)
In June 2025, members of the Tajik Wikimedians User Group organized a photographic expedition to Iskanderkul Lake, one of the most iconic natural sites of Tajikistan located in the Fann Mountains. The field trip was carried out within the framework of the national photo contest Wiki Loves Earth 2025 (Tajikistan).
The main purpose of the expedition was to document Tajikistan’s natural heritage and contribute freely licensed materials to Wikimedia projects — including Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, and Wikidata.
During the three-day journey, the team captured extensive photographic documentation of landscapes, biodiversity, and cultural surroundings of Iskanderkul. The resulting images were later uploaded to Commons and integrated into multiple-language Wikipedia articles to help illustrate Tajikistan’s environmental diversity. We would also like to remind you that the stated goal of this photo expedition, i.e. uploading more than 500 photographs of Lake Iskandarkul, was achieved by all participants.
The trip also functioned as a community development and learning activity, where participants improved their skills in photography, Creative Commons licensing, categorization, and metadata tagging. It strengthened collaboration within the Tajik Wikimedia community and reinforced the mission of promoting open access to high-quality visual knowledge about Tajikistan’s nature.
