Anonymous/Logged-in in same template[edit]

Do we allow for anonymous and logged in versions of the same template?

We have needed/used it in the past:

+1 to everything Casey has said. He's entirely right. We'd use it for banner testing for many things, as well. Philippe (WMF) 22:48, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
My thinking here is that the more common use case seems to be hiding a banner from either anonymous users or logged in users. The proposed interface is optimized to make that very simple. With the proposed interface, in order to accomplish what was done with the above examples, you could simply clone the banner and mark one as anon only and the other as logged in only. If we build the functionality to display different versions to different users into the banner creation interface, however, each banner would have 1, 2, or 4 textareas (instead of just 1 or 2) and we would still need to provide some method of hiding banners from one or the other type of user if that was desired. In other words, the interface would be significantly more complicated (possibly just to accommodate an edge case). How often do we display different versions of the same banner to anon vs. logged in users compared to displaying a banner just to one or the other? I would like to avoid what happened with the Commons uploading interface: making it accomodate so many cases that it becomes difficult to use for any of them. Also, I don't understand the reasoning behind the different versions presented in the example. For most of them, the only difference is that the anonymous users get a box around the notice and the logged in users don't. Otherwise they are identical. What purpose does this difference serve? I've really only seen this primarily used in our fundraiser banners and a few elections - about once-twice a year (any other cases that I might be missing?). I think it would be easier to just clone the banner and just make one banner for each type (ex. 2010_Notice1_anon and 2010_Notice1). I'd also rather have it be less complicated... the possiblity of having like 4 textareas for a single notice is just icky. :-) --Az1568 (talk) 23:30, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it was so that we could collect some statistics and tracking-related information. --Az1568 (talk) 23:39, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The only weird stats hack that that i remember was for the global not global in 2010 which wouldn't fall under this. Tfinc 23:49, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Philippe, what type of banner testing are you referring to? Would it not be possible to implement such testing using the proposed display filtering system? Ryan Kaldari 23:21, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Language targeting[edit]

Do we want to allow for specific language targeting rather then just language of project? As in, show this template to any French-speaking Wikimedian.

If possible, yes. For example, here's two separate scenarios:

  • Wikimédia France chapter trying to announce their new Wikipedia book or upcoming conference (with proceedings about Wikipedia to be held in French) → we want people who speak French (probably just on Wikipedias)
  • the Usability Initiative is announcing a rollout to the French Wikipedia → we only want this notice showing up on the French Wikipedia, not for an English Wikipedia user with a French interface

Come to think of it, this gets pretty complicated. ;-) Cbrown1023 talk 22:44, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, especially creating an interface for it that would not confuse people. Ryan Kaldari 22:52, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
