Talk:CheckUser privacy

AN/I comment, possibly useful in the future.[edit]

From Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents: diff:

Why don't we set a rule that anyone that is to edit wikipedia MUST register his/her IP number or numbers? Whoever does not have a registered IP number won't be able to change anything on the wikipedia. I mean, wikipedia is already big right? If we want to make it better maybe we should start sharpening our means to access pages.Besides that is going to discourage vandals and we will be able to track down the ones that mess with pages. The username and IP address used to make every edit is already recorded, so that information is available to certain privileged users if required: that's how Checkuser works. What would making the IP addresses of usernames publically available achieve in terms of disuading vandals? Gwernol 23:23, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
