@TheDJ: If I were to design my ideal mobile interface for Wikisource, it would be a simple vertical stack: have the page scan on top, then header, then the page content, and lastly the footer. @TheDJ and Duckmather: I have just found this discussion because I'm needing a mobile option like that (computer trouble at my side) and, as a suggestion, I'm thinking in something like that: instead of the desktop text/image side-by-side, I wonder if it would be possible to split a page by blocks/paragraphs, with the original image above and he transclusion below.
