Clarification
[edit]Hey @Nardog could you share a few examples where you've encountered this issue, with reproduction steps? Thanks! JWheeler-WMF (talk) 15:11, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- Umm... haven't you ever entered something into the search box on a wiki and hit Enter/Return and been shown a content page instead of search results? I'm baffled by these questions. Nardog (talk) 15:50, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- This response is more clear and direct, which is suggesting that every search request should first direct towards a search result page, and then allow users to choose a content page.
- Thanks for the clarification. JWheeler-WMF (talk) 19:38, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- No! What? I said Show[] a link to the full text search, much like "Redirected from ...". Nardog (talk) 03:09, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
- I think the idea is that when you enter say.. Paris in the search field and hit enter, you will be redirected to the page en:Paris. Then below the article's title (the contentSub) there would be a remark: "You searched for Paris, but more search results exist". Is that a fair summary @Nardog ? —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 09:45, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, except perhaps it doesn't necessarily have to be contentSub, especially if it redirects to a section (a problem that applies to "Redirected from ..." as well). And I've been scratching my head as to how it could possibly be interpreted any other way. Nardog (talk) 11:17, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support I think it would be useful even though the search dropdown already says it's a page and has a separate button to "Search pages containing XYZ"...for example because even if the users has read and understood that, the user may only notice that it's not the intended page once already on the page.
- However, I think it's fairly low importance because in addition, the user could simply enter the same search again and then click on that button. There also is the complication that the page is sometimes an article section so where should this info be displayed in that case – if it's at the top of the page the user wouldn't see it.
- The proposal could be improved by putting some explanations about the current state of things in front of So it can be confusing to be redirected to a content page because it just assumes the reader knows all the context and mechanisms – these should first be explained.

- Just FYI on Commons we always go to search results rather than an individual page (except for if the search starts with something like 'COM:'). I realise that's not what you're asking for @Nardog, just want to highlight that if we wanted to go that way we could turn it on for other wikis (and users can edit that behaviour via a preference) CParle (WMF) (talk) 11:16, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- That's not even remotely what the wish is about, so I'm at a loss as to why you would highlight it. Nardog (talk) 11:43, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
