Thank You
[edit]Hello Ponor, thank you for sharing a problem with the Community Wishlist. We will get back to you with further questions if need be. –– STei (WMF) (talk) 09:56, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hey @Ponor thanks for sharing this wish and the ideal result. Is there a chance you could share an image or example where the Page histories are too unwieldy? I'm sure there are a lot of examples, and it could help for folks who aren't as familiar with the problem.
- Re: collapsing, would you want two buttons - one for reverted changes, and another for consecutive edits by a single user? JWheeler-WMF (talk) 18:49, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, @JWheeler-WMF&@STei (WMF). I wasn't sure myself whether I wanted one or two buttons. One would probably do (but think two when designing the thing). As for the examples, these articles with 'dirty' histories popped into my mind:
- I can add some more as I remember. ponor (talk) 19:55, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- And by the way: it would be nice to have the state of the button(s) remembered, just like we have them for the visual/code diff buttons. You'd probably need that for my "virtually as one/none" diff browsing anyway. ponor (talk) 20:00, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
A button in the Watchlist to show diff of all unseen changes makes this redundant
[edit]One doesn't need to browse and check the History page long if one can simply open a diff of all unseen changes. This would save a lot of time and I don't see much of a need for what is proposed here since the edit would already have the tag Reverted next to it and such edits are only a small percentage of the diffs on History pages. - If one does not need to browse and check page histories, why are there already so many options to browse and check page histories to begin with? As a patroller and admin, I check many pages, but also many users for their edit behavior. Having to deal with those radio buttons to check unified diffs is very tiresome. As much as is having to skip series of reverted edits. ponor (talk) 17:43, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
- That's not what I meant. It's still useful and needed. As for the cases when people would still check History pages even if such a button existed by default: such edits are only a small percentage of the diffs on History pages. Usually there's at most one self-revert in it so it doesn't cause any significant issues as far as I can see and hiding them also has some problems which may not make it worth it. For example, people could add malicious content to pages and then self-revert after a few hours so it stays undetected. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:56, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
- Well there are of course some cases where checking the page History makes sense or is needed but I think it's not as often as the wish creator thinks is the case. Browsing some page histories can be hard and time consuming sounds like you're doing this to check your watchlist. However, if you open a diff for all changes since last seen as described in wish W424: A button in the Watchlist to see a diff of all unseen changes next to each article you don't see reverted changes by default and also don't need to go over successive edit summaries or diffs by one user.
