Update on the wish

[edit]

Hi, This wish has more details than this one:

Community Wishlist/Wishes/A 'Because You Read and recently edited a lot updated' tile in the Wikipedia app

I will reach out to the apps team in the foundation and get back to you.

Thank you! ARamadan-WMF (talk) 10:40, 30 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello again,
After following up with the product manager of the apps team, and their reply is that this idea aligns closely with the Rabbit Holes experiments, particularly the Recommended Reading List feature, which offers an expanded “Because You Read” experience similar to what you're proposing. They’re planning to release this more widely as part of the upcoming Discover feature in the app.
Thank you!

Thanks, sounds good. I don't know how the recommended reading list feature will work but depending on that it could possibly be worth having a swipable tile in addition if it will be more like some list or a list of mixed recommended articles without clear reference of each set to one specific article one has read/was interested in. One advantage could be the familiar and easy-to-use swiping UX.
In regards to your earlier comment, those two proposals are very different: the other wish is about an entirely new type of tile while this wish here is about making it so that the Because You Read tile isn't just one set of recommended articles for one article one has recently read but a) usually a new set every time one reopens the app after having scrolled back (seen) the prior set of recommended articles and b) not just one set but able to load another set for another article one has read / is interested in. (This of course requires the user to have read a few articles; if the user has just read 2 articles so far the max number of recommended sets to show would be 2.) The Recommended Reading List as envisioned in the mockup on the right is quite different in that it's not specific to one specified article. An additional difference may be that it's not included in the app's Explore feed. There could be some synergy developing this here afterwards or in combination with it: e.g. what is used by the reading list could also be used to show more Because You Read tiles. That may however not be needed since however BYR currently works may suffice – it would just be possible to show more of these items and it wouldn't show many times the same set of articles one has already seen.
There's an issue that the title of this wish has Customizable number of [BYR] tiles but now I find it would be better UX/UI if one could just swipe the tile to the left or right to see the next or prior set of recommended articles, each based on one particular article one has read.
Moreover, I have to revise what I said in my prior comment: if the user has just read 2 articles so far the max number of recommended sets to show wouldn't be 2 because the next set could be based on the same article but still show an entirely different set of articles. Hi again,
Thank you for the thoughtful clarification, when I mentioned the other wish had "more details," I simply meant it provided additional context useful for sharing with the product team. I didn’t mean to imply the two are the same, and I now fully see how this idea focuses on evolving the "Because You Read" tile in a distinct way.
I’ll share your updated suggestions, including the swipeable sets and dynamic recommendations — with the product manager as well.
Thanks again for your insights!

I updated the status of this to long-term opportunity since it was added to their backlog in Phabricator, and we'll check with them again as we enter planning for the new financial year. MikeZ-WMF (talk) 15:29, 23 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
After chatting with @ARamadan-WMF and the eng team, we're marking this in progress since it's a part of the team's current work here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Apps/Team/Explore_Feed_Refresh
While the alignment is not 100% with the wish description, the underlying goals are the similar enough and ultimate implementation will be based on data, usage insights, and user testing to shape the experience. Seems that @Prototyperspective is already a part of the feedback discussion on the team's talk page - thank you! MikeZ-WMF (talk) 16:35, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
