Wish received: Enable MediaSearch in InputBox on Commons

Hello @Prototyperspective,

Thanks again for submitting another well-detailed and thoughtful suggestion. We've received your wishlist proposal about enabling the MediaWiki InputBox to use MediaSearch instead of SpecialSearch on Commons. It’s an interesting idea that could make category-based searching much more intuitive, especially for newer users.

We’ll look into who might be responsible for this area and follow up once we have more information.

Just a quick update, we're happy to share that a patch has already been made to address this request:https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/InputBox/+/1154028

That means the work is already in progress. We’ll keep an eye on how it develops and share any relevant updates as they become available.

Okay, great to see some things getting implemented. Not yet done I think are:

• Fixing the problem caused by making MediaSearch the default by enabling templates to specify which search to use and/or by enabling to specify that the 'Categories and Pages' tab is preselected with the prefixes still working – see phab:T399476
• Enabling templates to specify which tab should be selected (currently always only "Images") – this is actually part of this wish at and some parameter(s) for the tab that should be opened which is "Images" by default). This part is important and the wish is not fully done so far but I don't object to it being marked as delivered early since either one could create a separate wish for that part or it's forseeable that this will get implemented as well soon (see issue above). For example, the searchbox in c:Category:Drone videos would have the videos tab selected, the one in c:Category:Spoken English Wikipedia would have audio selected, and so on.
