This could improve the search results a lot if the search really not look into subcategories at all. However, it's tricky because category trees can be very large and because they can deviate from the subject in some specific or far-down subcategories. I doubt setting a pre-defined depth would be a good or the best way to address this issue.

This would make the categories more useful and has a big potential in improving results as categories are well maintained and set plentiful on most files, because per c:Commons:OVERCAT users move things to subcategories, and many or most subcategories don't have the main/parent concept (here "dog") in their title. A way to make use of specific subcategories is to use the deepcategory search operator but few people know about it and it has some issues and people would know what the fitting specific fitting subcategory is. All in all, it probably some further development/research of how to implement this or something similar – for example another route would be to better match what people search for with the existing category and then use that subcategory for many of the search results and/or display a prompt beneath the search box like 'are you looking for files in category:collies y/n?' or something like it (it would remove the use of that subcategory if one clicks no and one can view the category with a click on the category).
