Relevant Jimmy Wales quote & input

[edit]

Just leaving this here: reddit user Ghtgsite asked the good question Do you see a future for a Wikimedia LLM to help navigating people through Wikipedia? and Wales replied I do... sort of. I think it's important to be clear about how flawed the technology is right now but also to see the incredible opportunity. I like your phrasing "help navigating people through Wikipedia" - our current search engine internally is pretty basic - keyword based. But what if you could ask a question and get guided to the specific section of the specific article that answers the question. Nice. Prototyperspective (talk) 10:58, 30 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Prototyperspective
Thank you for your wish!
While reviewing this with the team, we were unsure how to approach this given that there are many use cases on how to apply LLMs, which fall into different components of Wikipedia. Would it make sense to just decompose this into more bite-sized wishes? That would also make voting easier and more transparent. MikeZ-WMF (talk) 11:46, 27 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I could make separate wishes for these. However, this would 1) be the hub wish (and I suggest considering 'subtask'-like wishes) and 2) is about first of all training and integrating a LLM into Wikipedia so one can ask it questions for example by entering ?question here into the search bar. This wish explains why this can be useful via various potential applications such as helping newcomers easily find relevant help pages/sections. Yes, that would be helpful to separate wishes and associate it with this one. Please respond here once filed, thank you! MikeZ-WMF (talk) 10:03, 5 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
