Main benefit for WMF wikis?

Hi @TheDJ ... the main selling point here for WMF wikis is a new version of an upload on Commons, right? Other WMF wikis typically don't have >100MB uploads because of fair-use constraints AIUI ... but I could be wrong, would like to hear about it if I am CParle (WMF) (talk) 11:27, 7 August 2025 (UTC)

@CParle (WMF) In short, yes as most wiki's that do not require fair use, will mostly defer their uploads to Commons (although this is not a given). But I would say that the major benefit, is to make chunked uploading a better supported technology for all users and to make Commons Upload Wizard less of an exception in the overall landscape of our wikis. Instead of having 2 methods, for 2 different cases + an additional set of gadgets and user scripts all with their own issues, we could return to two tools (special:upload and special:uploadwizard), which both can use the same two upload methods, depending on the size of the file. That's more predictability, with additional benefits for non-Commons and non-WMF wikis. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 13:35, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
