Update from WMF

The team has some complexity to resolve before this can be scoped and prioritized, and might follow up here on the discussion page to add more context. In short:

• Unnecessarily compounding customizations that make them work fundamentally differently from other wikis—though some customizations have been unavoidable, such as for dealing with their multilingual content.
• Some of the community choices on Commons make it work differently from other wikis in ways that affect search, such as having templates instead of normal redirects.
• The goal of on-wiki search is to index and display the text that is in the document, not inject external information (even from Wikidata) and hide the query matches. It is a good thing to show highlights/snippets that encourage the searcher to click on something useful, but not at the cost of making it harder to understand why a given result was matched.
• We also considered the idea of a template to inject Wikidata descriptions into category pages or other pages. Info box templates can do it, so it should be possible. Putting them at the top of the category document (even if they are hidden text) would increase their visibility in search snippets—but it wouldn't guarantee it, as in the сабака case, where there would be no matches.
