Apps too

I just checked and in the Android app (iOS probably too) it also only shows tooltips underlined but doesn't show the tooltip when tapping onto it. Such tooltips are quite useful as they enable keeping things more short and concise while still allowing users more interested in sth or who find sth unclear to see more details at hover (or in this case on a tap). Regardless of what you think of their appropriateness or usefulness, they're used on Wikipedias and this should be supported on mobile (access method for most readers) too. If there are no objections, I'd add the two tags for the mobile app as well so that this wish is not about mobile Web only anymore. Using the app for reading should not mean any disavantages over using mobile Web. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:39, 12 March 2026 (UTC)

Thank you! I also confirmed in the Android app that tooltips don't work despite being underlined. I tested in the iOS app as well, and they work fine when tapping, so it seems to just be mobile web and Android. (If someone experiences otherwise, please let us know.)

To close the loop here, this is a limitation with the Android and mobile web browsers that can't be so easily fixed on our side, but the team will look at alternative solutions long-term! MikeZ-WMF (talk) 08:51, 17 April 2026 (UTC)

Maybe with 'on our side' you mean by just changes to MediaWiki and the app code. However, it's very feasible and reasonable to also edit the template, on English Wikipedia afaik that is en:Template:Tooltip. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:19, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
