Thanks!
[edit]@Commander Keane thank you for sharing this wish. Do you have an example use case for a DNG photo and how it might be better utilized than what is supported today? JWheeler-WMF (talk) 16:07, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- @JWheeler-WMF. Just read the phab task (which has been open for 15 years) with its linked Commons discussions. Commander Keane (talk) 21:57, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
Response to the wish
[edit]@Commander Keane Thank you for submitting your wish! We are working with internal stakeholders to figure out next steps, such as feasibility and prioritization. We’ll keep you posted about it. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 14:39, 27 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Sannita (WMF). I assume a hdr lossy format, like AVIF, is getting implemented first (if not already, I haven't checked).
- I submitted this wish to test the Wishlist interface, priority for me is low (below AVIF and in-browser SVG editing). This is because I have come to realise that virtually zero cameras use DNG for RAW photos (Apple pretend by using the extension, and I think some Leicas have it). For ultimate quality, the camera's RAW format (I assume proprietary, like Canon's .cr2) should be archived; it stores extra data for procesing that gets stripped by DNG conversion.
- There was a Wikimedia service storing RAW files, but it got shut down (no maintainer I think). Decent integration on Commons with such a service could include DNGs, and even tiffs. The consideration to include Nikon, Sony, Canon, Apple, etc RAW formats would be interesting. This implementation would be high priority to me - the path to highest quality, easier-to-check for AI manipulation, collaboratively edited photos on Wikimedia.
