why it doesn't yet exist

[edit]

The problem with category data is that there are no technical limits on it. It can be 3 million entries or more. This poses significant technical challenges for exporting such information, esp. when you also want all subcategories (which can loop). This is why this has not yet been implemented. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 08:16, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Why

[edit]

Can you enhance your wish, with WHY you want such a tool ? What will you use the exported list for. How many people need such a list. etc etc. etc. I think that would significantly enhance any chance to success. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 08:17, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks @TheDJ - @Joris Darlington Quarshie I agree, this wish has a clear "solution" for what you want to build, however it is unclear why this wish is important. With such a big idea, it'd help to frame the opportunity and build a rational case for the Foundation or technical contributors to engage. JWheeler-WMF (talk) 18:51, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@JWheeler-WMF@TheDJThank you very much for the feedback i am going to enhance this wish when i am free. I am currently on a tight schedule.Hoping I am able to do that before the first batch of focus area is been released.
Thank you once again! Joris Darlington Quarshie (talk) 22:38, 5 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unclear what data would get exported

[edit]

Would this export the list of pages (on Commons file-titles/urls) that are in the category or something else?

If it's lists of pages in the category, only pages directly in the category or also in its subcategories and so on?

Would these each also have a list of categories included?

Note that if it also includes pages/files in subcategories of subcategories and so on, these branches can go very deep and also sometimes be cyclical. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:35, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
