The false positive problem
[edit]The problem with things like this is that it is very difficult to get right. The likelihood of making 'bad suggestions' is rather high, and warning people for many many issues causes 'banner blindness'. What is the issue we are solving here ? We no longer want 'gradually improving articles', but 'perfect out of the gate' articles ? That seems very anti the wiki philosophy. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 14:48, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Is the core problem that many new articles lack quality? It's a hard needle to thread, as we want to support newcomers in being successful, without overwhelming them. JWheeler-WMF (talk) 21:13, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Agree, I think this is too much barriers in front of creating new articles. Also Infobox export gadget seems to only be Wikidata, that doesn't seem really appropriate there and not for new users anyway. However I'd support HotCat being enabled by default if that's among what you were suggesting @M2k~dewiki:. In addition there could be help balloons like there are in other software after publishing an article, such as "Please try adding some categories" with a link to the help page and/or very short info on how. Other than that there could and I think are bots and scripts that check for uncategorized new articles, wikilinks that need disambig, and so on that people can and do go through or that users are already made aware of. - An option however would be to display these things after the article has been created/published. That may be a good idea. Prototyperspective (talk) 00:53, 30 October 2025 (UTC)
