Hey @Tropwine Do you primarily edit on mobile? I'm curious how your use of the sandbox differs between a mobile device and a laptop or tablet.

How do you like to use your sandbox? JWheeler-WMF (talk) 16:46, 5 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I primarily edit on a laptop. However, I do frequently edit on mobile when I have spare time or no other work to do.
I like to use my sandbox as a sort of "staging area" for large edits or new articles. Tropwine (talk) 23:33, 5 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for submitting this wish @Tropwine, and for detailing your use case. I’m Haley Nordeen, a product manager on the Mobile Apps team. Creating access to user sandboxes is something we have thought about recently for the iOS Wikipedia App. We’ve heard requests for the Sandbox in app store reviews. You can follow the task for this request here on Phabricator. We’re particularly interested in surfacing the sandbox to newer users in the App to help them gain confidence using the App’s wikitext editor. A few follow-up questions if you have a moment:
  • When using the Sandbox for drafting and staging new articles, do you typically create multiple sandboxes or continue using the same one?
  • The apps don’t currently support new page creation, would you still find the sandbox useful if you couldn’t directly move an article you drafted in Sandbox into the main namespace from the app?
Also please let us know if you primarily edit using the iOS app, or the Android app. If you are interested, we can reach out to you once we have prototypes for testing, and we would appreciate your feedback. Please let us know if you have heard of anyone else interested in using the sandbox in the Mobile Apps so we can reach out to them as well. Thanks again! Which sandbox?

[edit]

The Wish refers to "the sandbox", which I take to mean the global sandbox, whose contents are frequently wiped, making it little use for anything. User sandboxes are much more useful. I wonder which the aiuthor of the wish intended. Maproom (talk) 21:12, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
