Questions and clarifications

[edit]

hi Xaosflux, thanks for sharing this!

I'm part of the WMF team(s) who manage the Train rollout each week, so I'm interested in this idea.

Questions for you:

  • Do you have examples of the issues where a wiki on an old version would have been helpful? Do you remember a time when you wished you had this? Can you describe it for me?
  • What would a hypothetical test3wiki need to be useful? That is, if you could visit some wiki equivalent to today's testwiki running last week's branch—would that cover the situations you could think of? Or are there things missing?

There are a couple of ways I've been thinking through this request. Answers to these questions will help me clarify my mental model of what you're looking for.

Thanks – TCipriani (WMF) (talk) 16:54, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Probably at least once a month when someone drops by at a common reporting platform such as w:en:WP:VPT and the answer it that w:en:WP:ITSTHURSDAY. When opening a regression bug in phab, having an example of "what do you expect" pointing to the prior behavior would be useful - this is usually along the lines of "I think it was like X, but now it is Y" - when sometimes it is really "It was Z, now it is Y" - but memories fail quickly! I suspect many of the issues at regression could benefit from this. — xaosflux Talk 17:13, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
