An idea might be to keep a list of 'recently used characters' ? It's a bit difficult to fix this problem because 'what people want' tends to differ STARKLY (really much more than people think). —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 09:51, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

Agree this could be a challenge to fix, as special characters vary from language to language, and are quite necessary for some wikis. The recently used could be a good solution, or perhaps revamping how special characters appear in the UI. JWheeler-WMF (talk) 21:18, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

@TheDJ, the Editing Team agrees with you in thinking including a "Recently used" section within the Special Characters toolbar will be an effective first step to helping people more easily find the character(s) they're likely seeking.

Wish complete

New "Recently used" section in the visual editor's special characters toolbar.

As of yesterday, 19 December 2024, the Special Characters tool includes a new section called, "Recently used."

This section will be populated with the 32 special characters you have used most recently, across editing sessions.

To start, the "Recently used" section will be available within the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor on desktop.
