@Hujo there is a gadget on English Wikipedia that solves this issue. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-searchFocus

Yes, that is exactly what the majority of users of wikipedia would like and that I want too.

Why was it rejected if that's the case? It sounds like a good idea. I looked into that issues and there somebody wrote The focus *is* in the search box on the entry portal at http://www.wikipedia.org/ so I thought the issue is solved and this wish should be set to "Delivered". However, I check and what is missing that the focus should also be on the search box on the w:Main page. Maybe the title of this wish could be changed. Please focus the search box on the main page, there's no use or reason to not focus that on that particular landing page. Prototyperspective (talk) 19:40, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

I can only guess: Because there is a "laborious" workaround to get that. The Gadget-searchFocus.

You only need to

1. be logged in an then

2. Go to personal settings -> Gadgets -> and check the feature "Focus the cursor in the search bar on loading the Main Page"

It works. But only for logged-in users that went that route. My guess is that way less than 1% of all users of wikipedia are logged in :(.

I tried to explain to one from wikimedia that this "feature" (initial focus) is a no-brainer which every web-developer can implement and test in an hour and that it does not collide with any other functionality of the wikipedia webpages but to no avail, obviously.

This feature - enabled by default - would help thousands of users every day. Hujo (talk) 08:57, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
