incategory: / deepcategory:

Just FYI a workaround is to use either of these search operators to see the category's files in the MediaSearch which has larger thumbnails incl a quickview. For example like so. Prototyperspective (talk) 10:45, 9 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Ponor does workaround work for you? JWheeler-WMF (talk) 19:40, 11 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@JWheeler-WMF It helps, but copy&pasting the name of each category I'd like to browse into a incategory:"..." is far from "Improved discovery of media files". That view in Category:XYZ – yes, please! ponor (talk) 19:52, 11 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
FYI this is what c:Commons:Requests for comment/Technical needs survey/Wall of images view for category pages including images in subcats is about. Here CParle (WMF) suggests using deepcategory search for this wouldn't be a viable solution but if you're only interested in files directly within a category that's something different. Also relevant is phab:T367652 regarding a gadget for a wall of images view as well as c:Help:Gadget-DeepcatSearch which has a link in the Tools dropdown for the deepcat view where one could ask for a handy link to the incategory: view to be added so that one can go there with just 2 clicks instead of writing&copy-pasting things into the search bar. Larger Thumbnails in Category Views (W413)

[edit]

Hi @Ponor – I am interested in contributing to the Community Wishlist item “Larger thumbnails in category views (W413)”. Based on my experience with Wikimedia Commons and web development, I would like to explore implementing a solution for dynamically resizing thumbnails or adding zoom controls on category and gallery pages. If there is already a task, discussion, or ongoing development related to this feature on Phabricator or elsewhere, I would greatly appreciate being pointed to it. I am eager to participate and contribute to making this feature a reality for the community. Thank you for your time. Shivanshu k28 (talk) 18:45, 26 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Shivanshu k28. Sorry for the delay, I don't always see all the notifications from metawiki. You asked me again if there's anything you could work on regarding this wish. I must say - I do not know. To me, this seems like a strategic decision someone needs to make, as it will affect all users, but also involves the way our servers cache and deliver the thumbnails shown in the galleries. Let's ping @JWheeler-WMF, he might be able to tell you more. ponor (talk) 14:42, 27 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Ponor, I have pinged @JWheeler-WMF on his user page, Lets see what does he replies.

@Ponor and Shivanshu k28: According to their user page, Jack Wheeler no longer works for the WMF. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 04:49, 29 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@TheDJ: please comment if you have an answer for the user. It probably involves quite a bit of backend code. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:05, 3 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
As of recently, there’s only a couple of sizes of actual thumbnails, regardless of which frame/display size you use. So this is mostly a question of styling. This can be done with a layout sizing flash via a JavaScript gadget (a bit annoying), or by implementing serverside changes. I will warn however that the serverside gallery PHP code (on which the category galleries are based), is pretty antiquated and is not easy to understand. I’m not aware of pre existing tasks for a change like this. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:28, 3 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
