Workarounds
[edit]@MenkinAlRire There are gadgets in the preferences of some of the wikis that will allow you to bypass the 'local' description pages. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 14:25, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- But this time you don't get away with it.) That's why it's on the wish list. One of the two suggestions I made (menu option or in the preferences, or something different) could be made possible I imagine. Otherwise, if I am standing alone with this and there is no support, I would understand. But I would hope and wait a bit. MenkinAlRire (talk) 14:43, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, I am stupid, I read that there were NO gadgets... Do you have a specific suggestion for Wikipedia, or what to look/search for? MenkinAlRire (talk) 14:45, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- In English Wikipedia it is called: "Redirect image links to Commons for files hosted there" —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 20:12, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- @TheDJ Thanks. I found and activated the gadget DirectCommons, but I didn't see any difference yet. MenkinAlRire (talk) 08:29, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

My support. The problem is real and can be fixed. Workarounds exist but this is annoying. 2dk (talk) 19:43, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- So the traditional issue has been that local wikis sometimes ALSO have files, and these have precedence. Additionally, some wikis have their own featured image processes etc. My suggestion to make this wish more likely to succeed is:
- 1. IF an image is used from Commons and there is no local wiki page, use direct links to the Commons description page, instead of to the local file description page.
- 2. IF a wiki does not allow for local uploads, always direct image links to Commons file description pages —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 20:15, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- @TheDJ Shall I make a new proposition or does your comment here suffice, since the title of the wish is clear? MenkinAlRire (talk) 08:34, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- We can just update the current wish. Wishes are a work in progress. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 08:37, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

- Also why just Wikipedia and not every non-Commons project, if this is going ahead? --SHB2000 (t • c) 06:30, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- It just was my specific problem. If it can be formulated as a broader interwiki link issue, I don't know. MenkinAlRire (talk) 08:36, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
Show the WMC page directly?
[edit]Agree with your proposal. And it's an issue that Commons categories are not shown on that file page. They are very useful and it took a lot of time to organize the many files into these which can be used to find more similar images or related images. However, why not show the WMC page directly rather than these intermediate page? Maybe I should make a new proposal but it would be very related to this one it seems. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:54, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Prototyperspective Read my proposal again, it is exactly what you describe.
(P. S.: I don't know, if the "add topic" button is right here, instead of "reply", which I miss and use edit instead.) MenkinAlRire (talk) 11:58, 1 August 2024 (UTC)- If it does say that then "Shortcut for…" is not clear enough I thought. However when I tested this now I couldn't find an image where the user is first taken to the Wikipedia page of the image rather than the commons page so maybe it has changed in the meantime or it's only the case in some specific conditions which I don't know. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:22, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Actually it's the button beneath the file but apparently its function varies and I don't know how. Made a new wish here: Community Wishlist/Wishes/When clicking on the file-info button, open the Wikimedia Commons page directly. (also @JopkeB: below). Prototyperspective (talk) 23:13, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- As also stated below the problem occurs whenever one opens the file in a new tab. From the proposal: or an option in the preferences to go directly from an image in Wikipedia to its Commons page. Disagree with that, I think it should always go directly to the Commons page and there is no good reason for going to that intermediary page. If there is an option for that, then the default setting should be that it goes directly to Commons. Mentioned this Wishlist proposal at c:Commons:Requests for comment/Technical needs survey/Categories on mobile. It's a big problem most users can't see the Commons categories because they either open the media files in new tabs or use the mobile website. Prototyperspective (talk) 16:29, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

Some background information
[edit]I think it also depends on the Wikipedia
- For example in the Dutch one you go fairly directly to a file in Commons (one very clear extra click); that is because the Dutch Wikipedia does not allow images stored in the Wikipedia database; if you want to use a photo, it has to be in Commons.
- In the English and perhaps German Wikipedia it is also allowed to store images in the Wikipedia database, for example with another license than Commons allows. In that sort of cases, it does not make sense to go to Commons, because the file is not in Commons.
JopkeB (talk) 15:50, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- It was for files that are stored on Commons where one had to first click view description on commons to get to the page. I now found one way where there is still an intermediate Wikipedia page: when deactivating the MediaViewer. I think it should also show the WMC page directly. Confused
[edit]Is anyone else confused by this wish's description?
Like most general users I suspect:
- I do have mw:Media Viewer enabled
- I don't have "Redirect image links to Commons for files hosted there" enabled
When I click on an image on English Wikipedia I am always taken to the Media Viewer page which has the [Details] button (mobile) ([More details] on desktop) that takes me directly to the Commons file page if the file is on Commons, or the en.wp file page if it is stored locally (eg fair use).
Examples:
- Click the infobox picture at w:Stan Lee, click [Details] on Media Viewer page. Takes me straight to the Commons file page with the Commons categories at the bottom.
- Click the infobox picture at w:Wasp (character), click [Details] on Media Viewer page. Takes me straight to the en.wp file page.
I just can't follow what this wish is wanting. Commander Keane (talk) 07:00, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
- To answer myself the problem arises when you open the image in a new tab. Commander Keane (talk) 01:46, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
