Discussion for W125: Sorting of Categories proposed by Duschgeldrache2 (talk)

Thank you

@Duschgeldrache2 thanks for this wish. Why do you create categories for your pages, and how would sorting categories help? JWheeler-WMF (talk) 03:50, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I think the reasons for adding (not creating) categories would be the same as for any other people who add categories and is basically irrelevant to the wish. @Duschgeldrache2: If this is only about mobile the current title is misleading and would better be "Sorting of categories on mobile". If you mean the sortkey one can sort by entering catname|sortkey in HotCat but you seem to mean sorting the order they appear...sorting them is not needed and if anything should be done automatically and instead of manually by users so it's good that options for that don't show up on mobile – it would only clutter Watchlists. sorting them is not needed Sadly, editors often make edits specifically to sort the categories – normally into alphabetical order. It would save a lot of trouble if the skin just automatically displayed the categories in alphabetical order — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 07:12, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it's a problem I think. It would be more useful if categories were sorted manually, e.g. first categories referring to the year like '2005 books' then about contents like 'books about xyz'. Such sorting could also be made automatically eventually – this would require enabling users to specify category-group categories where one could be Category:Books by year that would result in any subcats thereof being displayed next to each other under articles (described it also here). A benefit is that it reduces clutter in Watchlists and diffs and results in a consistent, useful sorting. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:57, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
