Talk:Community Wishlist Survey 2023/Add ability to share QR code for a page in any Wikimedia project

Title share icon[edit]

@JSengupta-WMF and BMartinezCalvo (WMF): You mentioned on the Figma board that a share icon (e.g. ) next to the title might be a good place to link to the QR Code form. The way it's done on hiwikipedia and others is with some variation on a gadget. I think it's a good idea, and I'm wondering that, if we add this to this feature, then it could make those gadgets unnecessary as well as provide multiple features (i.e. short URL, QR Code, and maybe copy-to-clipboard for the various URLs). Counter argument[edit]

  • "There doesn't appear to be any reason to limit QR Code creation to only Wikimedia URLs. Some existing tools already allow any URLs."

I read somewhere, that there's a (database) cost to host any URLs. If anybody know which phabricator ticket's comment it was, please add in the notes.

Basically allowing any URLs would make the database became enormous, and other technical reasons why WMF shouldn't do it. Bennylin 16:01, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

QR codes contain all the information needed to use them, so I don’t think any database is necessary (unless they encode short URLs, in which case the short URLs need to be resolved to the long versions using a DB). Maybe what you recall is about short URLs? —Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:03, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
