I need a life.

This is the best thing I've seen all week (Which is a real comment on how interesting my weeks are)! -- Kwekubo 23:29, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

This is simply a wonderful piece of lyrics! Thank you Elf! \Mike (Not to forget the Angel who brought it here.)
Too schweeet, you're all absolutely right, bed-time. Weaponofmassinstruction 08:47, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

LOL this's fantastic -- 12:22, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Great lyrics it would be awesome if someone would record it :) -- Obradovic Goran 23:39, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I want to listen![edit]

But I can't find a link. Can someone help me? The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk • contribs) .

I don't know the words to Hotel California (aside from the first line), and I barely know the tune for more than 3 lines. Wouldn't someone like to record this and upload it for the sake of us non-rock&rollers? :) 12:17, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I also thought of that. Maybe if i have time i will give it a shot. Erik009 18:39, 14 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Is this a copyright violation?[edit]

I don't really know, but aren't most lyrics copyrightable, at least in the United States where these servers are? I know that in the United States, what is copyrightable is a "creative work" or "original authorship." The lyrics to Hotel California are definitely both of those. Then, if I am correct, this would be a derivative work. But the lyrics to Hotel California are certainly not licensed under the GFDL. And thus this could be only be used under w:fair use, which would be a paltry and bald claim, considering that there is no "critical commentary." What do others think? --Iamunknown 00:10, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's a parody. IANAL, but I believe this is permitted under copyright law. --Versageek 00:17, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
True. According to the English-language Wikipedia article, Weird Al had to get licensing permission from the artists and the labels to produce his work. Does that apply here? --Iamunknown 00:25, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
If that's what it says, it's wrong. Al's position is that he does not need to get such permission, but he chooses to do so to avoid bad blood between him and the artists he parodies. 02:30, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I dunno now if that is the case (and don't feel inclined to look :-P). So I guess this is okay under United States copyright law; if Meta adopts a non-free content policy, however, I assume that it would not be okay. --Iamunknown 03:05, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Recording the song???[edit]

Keeping in mind that IANAL, here's what I understand:

  • The actual music is copyrighted, and could not be disseminated on Wikimedia.
  • The lyrics to the original song (Hotel California) are copyrighted, and could not be disseminated on Wikimedia.
  • The lyrics to the parody do not fall under the "derivative works" clause, and, as they were posted on Wikimedia (and originally on the English Wikipedia), they are released under the GDFL and can be disseminated on Wikimedia.

If this is correct, can anyone raise any objections to my singing the parody (a capella or accompanied only by a metronome) and uploading it here? If I don't get any within 1 week, I'll go ahead and start work on it. Thanks, Trvsdrlng 03:56, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hearing no objections, I will now begin work on my rendition of "Hotel Wikipedia". Updates to follow... eventually... Trvsdrlng 01:52, 20 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

RECORD! (Please!)[edit]

Please record this song! I'm getting tired of singing it myself. EvilWendyMan 10:03, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Honored, but really[edit]

Thank yew, thank yew--I had a fun evening with this once upon a time, back when there were only one or two Wikipedia songs around (in fact, only one or two WIkipedians around, let alone public editors). I did not ever declare it to be the official theme song; some other enthused soul made that declaration, and I have no idea who that was. However, in honor of the honor, I have used Leon2323's user box on my user page, with one key edit. :-) Elf (talk) 17:06, 24 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dear @Elf: Thank you. Geraldshields11 (talk) 14:04, 21 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

My creation[edit]

I think I have created something which is more suitable for this purpose, see en:Wikipedia:Songs_about_Wikipedia/March_of_Wikipedia. Championtalken-wiki 04:29, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

I want to know how this became the official song. Also I would like to edit it.

In my parents basement,
Sat down in my chair.
Horrible smell of unwashed pajamas
Circling round in the air.
Suddenly on the screen
There came a flickering light.
My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim;
Someone edited Do**** Tr***'s height! [EDITED TO AVOID BLP ISSUES]

There it was in the diffs:
He's only "4 foot 6 in height?!"
And I was thinking to myself
This could be true but there's isn't a cite,
Then my notifications lit up
And it showed me the way.
The editor who did this was named T****SUXBALLS;
And I saw them say:

Welcome to the Hotel Wikipedia
Such a lovely space
I like to troll the place
Plenty of work at the Hotel Wikipedia
You can find our gifts

Of inserting penis gifs...

Heh. Too, too true. One big reason why I eventually stopped wanting to maintain pages. Sigh. Elf (talk) 23:43, 2 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

There is no "Quickbar" any more, as far as I can tell... The lyrics need to be changed Iadmc (talk) 03:35, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Why I find myself here[edit]

Wants to be: Knowledge of the people, by the people, for the people - free and editable to everyone, everywhere.

Really is: Nerdy white men citing other people's ideas which already match their own so they can pat themselves on the back in the talk pages while their wives post photos on Instagram.

Could be: Better.
