Talk:IRC/Group Contacts/Surgeries/July 2008

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Good day, I should probably clear up a few confusing messages that have been flying about. This message can be taken to be the actual status quo. Essentially, as group contacts we are somewhat limited at present as to what we can actually do, and this means that we haven't been involved as much as we perhaps should be. freenode have stripped us of most of our powers until we are able to fix our paperwork with them as to what we should actually control. This means that only the Wikimedia namespace is currently under my control, and frankly no-one really knows what James actually has control over. So, we can't actually have much of an influence over most parts of the network. We are still waiting on freenode to completely renew the relationship but unfortunately the only person who can do it, the head of staff, is very very busy and so it may take some time.

I hope that clears up the administrative situation. In terms of activity, it's true that neither James and I are especially active in Wikimedia channels. But we're not trying to be 'super ops' everywhere, making lots of individual decisions; we'd rather only step in when necessary. And when it is necessary we're always available on the end of an e-mail. Do please feel free to make use of that :)Sean Whitton / 11:17, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Expanding channel contacts[edit]

When freenode and the WMF has reached an agreement with the renewal of Wikimedia's agreement, I am wondering if Wikimedia can use staffers who are affiliated with the project to make cloaks and/or to be group contacts. Current staffers who have wikimedia affiliation are the following:

I think part of the meeting could discuss giving group contact status to some of these guys (except Sean, who already has it). —Giggy 05:28, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies[edit]

I was planning to attend, but ended up unable to do so, owing to the untimely self-destruction of my PC, the lack of internet-preparedness of its new replacement, and also a healthy dose of apathy and forgetfulness. Sorry for not being there. :( Especially considering I was the one who lobbied to get the time shifted back a few hours. - Mark 22:56, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Next time we must do it at a time more convenient for Aussies than 3 am... :-) —Giggy 13:29, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
