MetaWikiPedia

Is there some reason this site is not itself included in the map?

I added "Meta http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/$1" to my interwiki map, and redirected the help links to "Meta:Help:Contents" after going crazy trying to copy the endless network of help files into my wiki.

Actually, it is, using the more canonical (though sort of out of date) prefix "MetaWikiPedia:". The short-form "meta:" is dealt with seperately like all such abbreviated links between Wikimedia projects - which also include things like w:, b:, s:, and m:, which would be annoying for people outside Wikimedia to have to keep "tripping over". "Meta" could mean all sorts of things outside of a Wikimedia context - even here, I notice interwikis for Metaweb: and MetaWiki:.
I say it's "sort of out of date" because it dates to when there was only "WikiPedia" and "MetaWikiPedia" to worry about (note that the CamelCase-ness is so that it's consistent with wikis where links have to look like that); if we could magically change the convention for the whole WikiWorld, it would be better to have something like "WikiMediaMeta:".
But basically, you can do what you like with your intermap, this is just for maintaining the one used on the [several hundred!] Wikimedia wikis. - IMSoP 17:14, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Done— already on the map. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 04:20, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

MosaPedia

So the Side is locked for normal users, I put it here for an admin to update it:

Wikiveg

I just added my wiki (wikiveg.org) to the list, which I hope is OK. It is going (I think) to become the "canonical" English-language vegan/vegetarian/animal rights wiki, so there could potentially be a lot of linkage from any animal-, animal product-, vegetarian-, vegetable-, etc. -related Wikipedia articles to wikiveg. If it isn't OK (dunno what the policy is) let me know. Zach 00:54, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

I also dare to add a (already somewhat developped) wiki to the list: Stadtwiki Karlsruhe. de:Benutzer:Ikar.us, 30 May 2005

VLOS

Could a sysop please consider adding the Vietnamese Library of Science to the interwiki map? It's a MediaWiki-based project that has close ties to the Vietnamese Wikipedia, since most of its members are also active members at vi:, and it was started by one of our sysops. The link would expand:

VLOS:$1

Individual wikis within Wikicities?

May I suggest:

Wikicities http://www.wikicities.com/wiki/$1
Wikicity http://www.wikicities.com/wiki/c:$1

where "wikicities:" is the existing interwiki link to the main Wikicities site and "wikicity:" is a proposal for a link format to go directly to one individual wiki within Wikicities - something which is currently written (awkwardly) as Wikicities:c: followed by the name of the wiki and page. --w:user:carlb

I support this request, assuming it works to have "Wikicity:NetHack" instead of "Wikicities:c:NetHack". --Kernigh 21:28, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
I am waiting for input from Angela about this. --Walter 22:23, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
I've added that. I've also added one for wikia, which is going to start working soon, and will replace the old style wikicities:c: format. Angela 05:35, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Wikicities is now Wikia, so the interwikis should be Wikia:Wikiname:Page. For example Wikia:Creatures:Norn will go to the Norn page on the Creatures Wikia. CentralWikia:Promotion is a separate interwiki for linking to the central Wikia, though Wikia:www:Promotion would also work. Angela 05:53, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

I suggest the interwiki prefix "Editthis". Also, the url needs to be http://editthis.info/wiki/index.php/$1
This will allow you to reach the central wiki, but not other wikis. --Kernigh 02:30, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
You're right, I figured editthis:wikiname:page would work like with wikia. It doesn't. This will still be useful for the single pages, though. Wikipedia:User:JiFish 20:53, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to know if some links to WikiCanada would be possible? The french version is bigger tho. Maybe could be added to both? the en. and fr. of wikipedia. other InterWiki's

 • What about making an InterWiki to irc.freenode.net? Maybe some references to IRC (How to connect), freenode would be usedfull too. It could used at many places as irc.freenode.net #fr.wikipedia and so on. Please make a proposal about the syntax. Regards Gangleri | T | Th 03:56, 2004 Nov 15 (UTC)
I'm not sure how worthwhile this would be to be honest. External links to IRC aren't that hard to make (e.g. irc://irc.freenode.net/fr.wikipedia should work), and having an interwiki prefix pointing to one particular IRC server would seem to be bordering on bias of some kind. Also, my personal suspicion is that not many people know about the interwiki mappings we already have, so such a shortcut probably wouldn't be used much anyway. As for "some references to...", I'm not sure what you mean, but it doesn't sound like something that can be achieved using an interwiki map. - IMSoP 12:18, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Thanks IMSoP for the answer. I was thinking about the different levels of skills of the contributors / participants at wiki projects. Not all have knowledge of IRC, some prefer to use (earlier) instant messengers. Sometimes chatting is more efficient then exchanging messages at the talk pages. This is why I think that IRC should be more promoted (maybe prefered).
I did not use Mozilla Firefox very much in the past but I will use it more often also because of better support of Unicode characters. Before I was not avare of the different icons available for the different protocols
HTTP as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
IRC as irc://irc.freenode.net/mediawiki
FTP as ftp://ftp.gimp.org/
and so on. I noticed that this is represented differently in MS IE and in (Firefox and / or Navigator) etc. Regards Gangleri | T | Th 03:57, 2004 Nov 20 (UTC)

[MW] - merriam-webster vs. MediaWiki

MW is a link to http://www.merriam-webster.com/ at present, but it should be better one to MediaWiki.org - especially if I think about this case in the long run, it affects the very own interests of Wikimedia.

So, is there a possibility to find out how many sites and/or pages actually use this link and change the entries to a new link form, let's say MWebster or so? MediaWiki will be available after the next update, anyway. --:Bdk: 14:09, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

Someone changed SEEDS to IslandSeeds!

I put SEEDS on this way back in March 2005 or so. SEEDS is the common abbreviation of the official name of the Saltspring Ecovillage Education and Development Society. seeds.org was not available, so we registered islandseeds.org for a domain name.

Now it appears someone has gone and changed our intemap key to "IslandSeeds" from "SEEDS"! This has broken interlinks what we had published on a number of wikis!

Does this reflect some sort of policy? Or was it just someone "being thoughful"? :-)

I'm going to change it back to SEEDS now, so the interlinks we have on other wikis will begin working again. --Bytesmiths 19:38, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia missing from Interwikimap

I found wikipedia itself missing from the map after I had installed. So I had to insert it manually:

INSERT INTO interwiki VALUES('wikipedia','http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/$1',0,0 );

Google

As someone mentioned above, using the interwiki link for google is almost useless. Rather than url-encoding the words, it separates any words with underscores. So, instead of searching for "testing testing", it will search for "testing_testing". Is there anything we can do to get around this?

I have to admit this is really frustrating as I thought I had a solution only to be dashed at the last. Utilising the HTML-encoded form of a most characters will work. For example, Google:testing%testing yields Google:testing%testing - part way to producing the necessary %20 for a URL-encoded character in the link. Trouble is Google:testing%20testing just gets Google:testing%20testing. --Barthax 13:01, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Aha!!! Google:testing+test Substitute spaces with + & Google does the rest. --Barthax 11:24, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Good. However, it seems more like a work-around rather than the ideal solution. What would it involve to make it so that Google:All your base works as expected? I found two proposed solutions in the Wikimedia mail archives. Will someone please verify if either or both work, and which is better. --Jcarroll 01:52, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

The patch in that link is good & does indeed work well with spaces from my preliminary testing. Note that the link shows code from an older version of the wiki & is no longer exact. A quick patch file which should work with any recent wiki version is as follows (I don't know enough about patch files to be 100% certain).

Discussion from the en.village pump

As a contributor to both Wikipedia and Wikitravel, what is involved in getting Wikitravel mapped in Wikipedia's Interwiki system? I link a lot of Wikitravel articles to the Wikipedia article. I would like to link in the reverse direction. Is there a policy for this? What would the format be? Something like wikitravel:article name ? --Nzpcmad 07:51, 4 May 2004 (UTC)

Unless I'm mistaken, isn't wikitravel not a wikimedia project, and not GFDL (it's attribution-sharealike, if memory serves). So the issue of how/whether to implement interwikis between the two is a political, not technical, one. I don't know if there's a formal policy on this, but it's noteworthy that no such extra-org interwikis currently exist. The best venue for this discussion is the wikimedia mailing list. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 11:07, 4 May 2004 (UTC)
Not true actually, e.g. meatball:UseRealNames works. A wikitravel shorthand seems reasonable, though there is nothing to stop editors using longhand links right now.
Indeed, we have a quite extensive set of InterWiki links - as mentioned on InterWiki, according to which page ours is based on that provided by UseMod (but I'm not sure that's up to date). I fairly often use links to MeatBall:, especially on meta: - I also note that Google:some search terms works, but the character escaping makes it fairly useless for anything other than single words - I fiddled, and the best I came up with was Google:some,search,terms,and-a-phrase which is about as ugly as copying and pasting the full URL :-( You can do Dictionary:word and Foldoc:foo as well.
But I'm wandering away from the point here - I'm not actually sure how and where the "InterMap" is defined on MediaWiki, so I guess we need to ask a developer to add WikiTravel: to it and/or tell us how. In fact, I don't even know of anywhere that lists the InterWiki prefixes currently available... - IMSoP 18:42, 4 May 2004 (UTC)
Interwiki links are defined in a special table. It is very easy to add new ones (though it might be hard to add same ones on all Wikipedias). I guess that anyone with SQL access can see which interlinks exist. Nikola 23:02, 4 May 2004 (UTC)

I was talking to Sunir about this recently. Our interwiki map was just copied from the interwiki map at meatball. That map is not intended to be a common interwiki map for all wikis, it's intended to be a shortcut to sites which are often mentioned on Meatball. So what we need to do is to make our own map. I've made a start, at meta:Interwiki map. -- Tim Starling 09:58, May 6, 2004 (UTC)

OK, I tried this. This link WikiTravel:Wanaka still points to Wikipedia not to Wikitravel? What did I do wrong? --Nzpcmad 22:06, 6 May 2004 (UTC)
You didn't do anything wrong - what Tim did wrong (no offense) was to simultaneously imply that that list was current and request edits to it. Since we don't have a MeatBall:FileReplacement-style system for automagically updating it, this is not the case. I added WikiTravel at the bottom of the list, but that doesn't mean anyone's put it into the actual database table.
I was thinking, though, that perhaps a Special: page could be made that presented this information, and allowed it to be edited (by sysops, or even just stewards). Similarly for the interlanguage links, which need updating every now and then. Not a priority, I know, but one of those things that shouldn't really require hacking the database directly every time. It's a bit more than could be done with a MediaWiki: page, I gather, but it could have a similar editing interface (can Special pages have attached discussion? I don't think they can). [And yes, I know: put it on SourceForge, and preferably do it yourself; once I've finished my degree, I may well do both :)] - IMSoP 23:42, 6 May 2004 (UTC)

Open for suggestions?

I found this page referred to from en:Wikipedia:Village Pump. But is this open to suggestions/ requests from other language wikipedias?

Or nobody knows at this point? Tomos 04:27, 8 May 2004 (UTC)

I believe it is open for suggestions. Angela 22:31, 11 May 2004 (UTC)

Category:InterWiki and / or Template:InterWiki

Please use spelling Interwiki.--Patrick 08:21, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Why? InterWiki is the more common spelling, due to the use of CamelCase in the wikis from which the cocept originated. In a plain English context, the most natural spelling wouuld probably be "inter-wiki", but it seems "InterWiki" and "interwiki" are the accepted spellings. - IMSoP 12:10, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Updates

how often are the mappings copyed over? KinkoBlast -(EN-Wikipedia and Creatures Wiki{on wikicities})

I also would like to know this. Alphax 09:34, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Why isn't this page protected? Ambush Commander 20:11, 10 May 2005 (UTC)
This page isn't protected so that people can actually edit it. It uses Wikipedia:File Replacement methods. The problem is - it seems - that it only updates the interwiki table after a set time that this page has not been edited. I think it should rather be that once it is patrolled the file is updated. OR someone should just post saying "This table is copied to the database X number of days after it is changed. For this reason - please only make changes on MONDAY to allow time for the changes to propoage. If you make changes on a day other than MONDAY you will be messing it up foreveryone." or have a Sysop protect the page on every day but the "edit day" and have the "edit day" be advertised on the page itself... --Ryan Gardner 07:55, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
Rubbish. It works by file replacement on Meatball, it has never done so here. It used to be updated whenever a new wiki was created via the "create wiki" button. This was left unstated because I didn't want anyone to realise that they could predict when updates would occur and thus vandalise the real list. Since automatic wiki creation was disabled, updates have been very rare, probably only a couple of times in the last 6 months. Updates will continue to be invoked manually for the time being. -- Tim Starling 10:43, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Updates (cont'd)

Coming here from recently finding a 'new' wiki to edit (I am such an edit-slut ;-) I note that if it is the case that It only updates the interwiki table after a set time that this page has not been edited. then maybe the list should be held separately (eg. Interwiki map/list) from the content and just included in the main page so that the clock isn't reset every time someone edits the comment text. Most of the recent edits haven't been adding new wikis to the list but have had the effect of not permitting the replace to take place, such that new links added nearly a month ago here still haven't made it to the working links. --VampWillow 17:38, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

There is no clock, there never has been a clock, see above. -- Tim Starling 10:43, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Altering output text

I understand that if I make a link to wikipedia:Foo then it shows up as wikipedia:Foo. But is there any way to make it show up as wp:Foo instead? Having that whole big long word 'wikipedia' in there really breaks up the appearance of the page. I am using MediaWiki of course. --Etoile 29 July 2005

Well, like with any link you can use a piped link - so wp:Foo shows up how you wanted - wp:Foo. But if you're looking for something that automatically does that, then no. Sorry. - IMSoP 21:02, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

sysop lock?

Looks like this page has been locked? Wanted to add new mediawiki
VinOpinions --> http://vinopinions.org

any other facility for adding to this list? VinOpinions 22:17, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm adding it to the list of requests at the top of the page. --Woozle 14:47, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

From the protection log:
Brion VIBBER protected Interwiki map (Never ever unlock this page [edit=sysop:move=sysop])
Meatball rejected the PublicallyEditableInterMap, and Oddmuse wikis automatically lock their interwiki maps, and their are plenty of reasons not to allow random users to add wikis, but I do not understand why MetaWikipedia protected this page without giving the reason at this page. --Kernigh 06:16, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
The map is automatically inserted on the database. It's extremely insecure to leave it unlocked, and it was used to create a JavaScript injection vector. --brion 06:38, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
I will have to agree that protecting this page is probably a good idea. This page is just as sensitive as a MediaWiki page. If vandals could inject JavaScript, they could compromise accounts. Also, vandals could trick users into visiting shock sites. The results would be pretty ugly - no pun intended. --169.229.98.90 10:47, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

This edit created the "JavaScript injection vector". Ouch! That might have allowed someone to use an interwiki link to steal my login cookies... I hope Brion was not too late in locking the page. --Kernigh 04:26, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Please edit intro

The page says the list should be "edited edited according to your wishes" but it seems to be locked (no edit link visible). But the intro section does need edited, as it's currently not very clear. I'd suggest this:
Any wiki can be added to this map - please add your request on the talk page.
--Singkong2005 23:28, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

See my updated comments below--Singkong2005 05:29, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

A note has now been added at Wikia:Interwiki map, saying that new Wikia wikis are not added to the map. A similar note should be added here too, if applicable, along the lines of:

To suggest changes to this list, please go to the talk page.
Note: We don't add new Wikia wikis here now since they can be linked using w:c:pets:page name from Wikia.com and Wikia wikis, or using wikia:pets:page name or wikiasite:pets:page name from Wikimedia projects. (Replace pets with the domain name of the wikia you are linking to.)

At Wikia's Talk:Interwiki_map I've also suggested copyediting the intro, and pasted the intro's source there so that anyone can contribute. Feel free to contribute; the finished result could be adapted for meta's Interwiki map page as well. --Singkong2005 05:29, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
