Talk:Learning patterns/How to use the global metrics magic button
Add topicCould this magic button be used by Technical Collaboration?
[edit]The Technical Collaboration team supports conversations and organizes events (and more things that are probably less relevant here). I wonder whether we could make some good use of this Magic Button? The name and the learning pattern are suggestive, but we would welcome some help understanding this functionality and exploring how could we use it.--Qgil-WMF (talk) 09:05, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
- Hullo Qgil-WMF, it depends on what metrics you want to use. What are the goals of your conversations and events? If it has to do with improving content on the wikis or creating or retaining editors, you might want to use the Global Metrics, and if so, the Global Metrics magic button is an easy way to calculate those. Does that help? Abittaker (WMF) (talk) 18:53, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
- We could do more understanding who is contributing to mediawiki.org, editing and translating. There are also first conversations about organizing technical documentation sprints. I see potential for a mw:Wikimedia Hackathon 2016 conversation. :)--Qgil-WMF (talk) 22:00, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
- Sweet, looking forward to it! Abittaker (WMF) (talk) 22:14, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Wikidata inclusion ?
[edit]Are Wikidata edits included in the pages_edited and bytes_added counters? At first glance, comparing with individual reports I had already made, it looks like they are not. Can also someone confirm that improved articles are counted (not only created articles as it used to be with the former Pages created metric)? --EdouardHue (talk) 20:16, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hello EdouardHue, I just ran a quick test report to confirm Wikidata is included. Wikidata edits are included in "pages_edited" and "bytes_added," but only in namespace 0 for pages edited and namespaces 1 through 15, excepting 6, for bytes added. Articles improved should include both articles created and existing articles edited, let me run a couple tests on that as well and get back to you. Abittaker (WMF) (talk) 00:42, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Abittaker (WMF), Thanks for the test about Wikidata, I will double-check my reports. Any update about existing articles improvements? --EdouardHue (talk) 17:00, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hello EdouardHue, sorry for the delay in getting back to you--a few people have asked this, so I wanted to get the technical explanation. The short answer is: yes, "pages_edited" includes both pages created and pages improved. The longer explanation is that "pages_edited" counts the distinct revisions that a user has worked on in namespace 0, which includes the first revision, which is the page creation. Thus, the metric includes both pages created and existing pages that were edited during the program. Hope that helps, please do let me know if you have more questions. - Thanks a lot! This will definitely make reporting easier! --EdouardHue (talk) 19:24, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Amanda, please add this learning pattern here, using the template used on that section. Thanks! María (WMF) (talk) 13:07, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
