Talk:List of globally banned users

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

This revision is even worse than how it was before, IMO. It provides the same extraneous info, yet in a way that makes it less obvious at a glance, but without actually hiding it in a way that would satisfy anyone. Leucosticte (talk) 05:29, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is this page necessary?[edit]

I wonder whether this page is necessary. --MZMcBride (talk) 23:35, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If it weren't for pages such as this and WMF_Global_Ban_Policy/List and having them on my watchlist, I wouldn't had learned about Russavia's ban. I want to stay informed so that I may complain about these bans. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 00:05, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia got rid of their banned users page, but retains the less informative w:Category:Banned Wikipedia users. Since this page is just a list (without ban rationales), it provides no more information than Category:Wikimedians banned by the WMF and may as well be deleted. Categories cannot be watchlisted. The attached page can, and is. It can be used to correct categories, and the category can be used to update the page, if anyone cares. And if nobody cares, it's not worth the effort to delete the page.
Wikipedia commonly deletes useful stuff. That's why it took 6 nominations! the 5th was snowing Keep when withdrawn, a year earlier. The "vote" was 35:33 delete, normally that would be No consensus, keep by default. But the closer decided. Looks like nobody asked for Deletion review. The list is not complete by the way, nor is the Category. I just noticed a new banned user by looking at this page. My, my. I am not seeing that policy was followed. Global bans would cover it. I'm not surprised. Wiki policies are often not worth the paper they are not written on. (If the policy was satisfied, the filing didn't show it clearly, but made a vague claim, not supported by a link. I'm not investing the time to investigate.)
One more point. This list covers all banned users, including "community banned," and also documents unsuccessful ban RfCs. The Category asserted is only for WMF bans, which are procedurally very, very different. --Abd (talk) 17:28, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh, I completely missed the Requests_for_comment/Global_ban_for_Tobias_Conradi discussion. We were told by Steven Walling that only extreme cases were going to be end up being banned, but the community doesn't know how to show restraint and it's globally banning run-of-the-mill sorts. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 04:02, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This page allows looking at bans over time, it's useful for analysis. As well, the WMF apparently decided to go into the ban business, something it had done only rarely before. Time will tell. The problem with WMF bans is that they are not for stated reason (or the reason is vague -- unstated TOS violations -- and in at least one case, inaccurate, but ... that's their business. What I regret is the loss of local autonomy, which was intrinsic to the ban business from the first global ban of Poetlister. It's a slippery slope. --Abd (talk) 21:16, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Addition request[edit]

Could someone please add WhenDatHotlineBling to the list? All of his accounts are globally locked. WhenThatHotlineBling (talk) 22:04, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No. There is a difference between globally banned and globally locked. Is it your account? -- Tegel (Talk) 22:07, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please change the date of the ban of Guido den Broeder from 30 January 2023 to 2024. This is evident from the successful RfC. Thanks.--2A02:AB04:2C2:E300:4049:43C:5942:34A9 20:34, 30 January 2024 (UTC) 2A02:AB04:2C2:E300:4049:43C:5942:34A9 20:34, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
