How do I setup texvcTT?

E Ba I'm trying to configure my mediawiki to accept the <math>...</math> tags. I got the texvc precompiled binary from sourceforge and added in the math directory. And I changed the value of $wgUseTex in LocalSettings.php to true. But that is not helping. After reading the very inadequate help file I found that I had to install teTex, dvips, and convert in the PATH: Could anyone tell me how to do this? Thanks a lot. --Praveen Gollakota 06:38, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC) ?

EDIT: ponsfrilus on 10 July 2006:

Texvc installaion is here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Enable_TeX and if you have problems with it go fish here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Problems_with_texvc

Incidentalist Manifestos

DRAFT 11

Incidentalism

Incidentalism is not a style of art, but rather an attitude towards the practice of art. Incidentalists are artists of any style, practice or medium who apply incidentalism in their work.

Articulating The New

The artist is a worker of boundries. To articulate is to express by manipulating boundries, boundries in sounds and shapes, boundaries in beliefs and behaviour. Whether for a page, canvas, stage or a moment of pregnant silence, it is the task of the artist to express that which has never been. It is through this articulation, this boundary work, that new ideas, new knowledge and new techniques first emerge.

WHEREAS, it is the artist who is the bringer of the new,
SO THEREFORE incidentalism is a strategy for provoking new expressions.

Beyond Preconception

The new cannot be achieved with skill or knowledge, both of which are rooted in the past, and are artifacts of the old. You cannot find the new by way of that which you have already conceived. If the outcome of an incident can be imagined, any enlightenment has already been perceived in the imagining; only the un-planned can reveal the un-preconcieved. Incidentalism seeks to introduce uncontrollable or unpredictable factors into the incident of art.

WHEREAS incidentalism strives to express the new,
SO THEREFORE it is not our purpose to use art as a tool to demonstrate our own skill or knowledge, but rather to use art as an apparatus to incite expressions that are beyond our own preconceptions.

Art and Residue

Art is not an object, art happens. Art happens when the actions of artists bring expressions into a state where they can be perceived. All objects that result from an incident are merely the residue of the incident, not the art itself.

WHEREAS residue incites further incidents which produce more residue,
SO THEREFORE an incident never truly ends; in fact all incidents change the world.

On Originality

All words, colours, shapes, movements, sounds and all other forms of expressions belong to all that have perceived them or wish to express them. All expressions are extensions of previous perceptions. Even if an expression is intentionally duplicated, it will always be affected and changed by the new incident of expression. Even if an expression is purposefully unique, the artifacts of the incident and previous perceptions will always be present. While no expression can ever be exactly repeated, neither can any expression be completely new.

WHEREAS, all expressions are both original and derivative,
SO THEREFORE any attempt to claim ideas, knowledge or techniques as property is fraud.

Freedom of Resonance

Ideas, knowledge and techniques are the fuel of progress. Limits on expression are enforced by vested interests in order to retain power. The new is a threat to the power of the status quo. Since the freedom of expressions to resonate is of critical importance, incidentalism will strive to reclaim any expression stolen from the public wealth, and give resonance to expressions suppressed by censors or otherwise excluded from public dialogue.

WHEREAS, expressions belong to all,
SO THEREFORE all things that restrict expression are tools of oppression.

Terms

Incident: The moment when art happens.

Incidentalist: An artist who practices incidentalism.

Coincidentalists: Anybody present or involved with an incident, including the other incidentalists. Coincidentalists are not necessarily Incidentalists or share the Incidentalists motives or beliefs. Incidentalist art has no audience, only coincidentalists.

Accidentalist: An accidentalist, also called a Rubist, is one who incites incidents with powerful and insightful resonance without any intention at all to do such. The work of the Accidentalist has the greatest potency because it is entirely unpreconcieved and therefore limitless in its potential to incite new and enlightening expressions.

Conventionist: Conventionists admire convention and feel important because of their relationship with, or knowledge of conventions, and usually these conventions are widely propagated by vested interests. They like conventional ideas and convention-like activities where people gather, frequently in a convention center, to worship conventions. They concern themselves with inane categorizations and judge value based on the fraud of authenticity. To a conventionist a thing has more value because it more closely replicates or mimics another thing, or is more similar to an idea or type that is well-defined, and is supposedly more authentic or genuine. They admire the well-planned and do not want the unpreconcieved to affect them.

Doctrines

Incidentalist Inferiority Doctrine: One cannot try to be an Accidentalist -- one either is or isn't one, and even that is not a state of being but rather a role in a particular incident. The Incidentalists accept that their work will always be secondary to the work of the Accidentalist. The Incidentalists accept that they must be merely artists; the Incidentalists admires and tries to learn from the Rubist, but does not try to be or become a Rubist, as that would be futile and the results predictable.

Failure Is Success Doctrine: An incidentalist does not rejoice when a test is passed with ease, but rather is disappointed because clearly the test has been too easy. If a goal is accomplished too readily, then the goal is deemed to have been set too low. If a plan goes off without a hitch, then the plan has lacked ambition. The Incidentalists are always reaching beyond their grasp, as nothing within their grasp will incite the new. Any plan of action with an easily predictable outcome is not worth doing.

Manifesto as Conventionism Doctrine: By virtue of defining conventions, these Manifestos themselves contain the seeds of conventionism; they are at best a point of departure for the practicing incidentalist and not of great value. These Manifestos are intended for those who are curious about incidentalism, be they admiring conventionists or emerging incidentalists. These Manifestos are not in any way complete, conclusive or binding and are subject to change without notice.

How do I edit http://wikiquote.org/?

The link from http://wikiquote.org/ to the Swedish language main page is broken due to an error: currently it reads "http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/sv:", but the correct address is "http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/sv:Huvudsida". I don't know how to fix this. Could someone please help me?

Sorry for your inconvinience, it was my fault. The link to SV WQ was fixed (the source of Wikiquote portal is Www.wikiquote.org portal). Thank you for your report again! --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 19:04, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi!

My name is my username, go find out what it is. I have been temporarily blocked from deleting pages on Wikipedia. I do not know why I converted to a vandal but ever since I was shocked to find content ripped off from here in a newspaper article without the bastard having given any credit to Wikipedia, I have been thinking hurtful thoughts about the whole business of writing for the papers. So I thought, why not delete all matter from the source itself. Wont given an opportunity for these armchair know-alls to strut 'their' stuff so!

Hosting multiple wikis

I' m wondering if and how it's possible to set up multiple wikis using a single installation. For example, Wikipedia uses subdomains suchs as **en.wikipedia.org** and **nl.wikipedia.org** to host a wiki for each language. This would be exactly what I want. However, the number of "languages" (topics in this case) may grow up to (i guess) 100 or more. It would be very unusefull to have a seperate database for each of them. I'm wondering if there is a smarter solution (like WikiCities has)

Improvements to the spanish version

Some improvements to the spanish version that cannot be added to the main page because it's protected:

  • New template: {{Active Commons}} – Active wikicommons
  • Links for editing templates of active projects (and not only to show them). For example:
{{active Wikipedias}} <small>({{edit|Template:Active Wikipedias|this list}})</small>

Can someone add them (or remove the protection)? Thanks --surueña 22:18, 2005 Apr 14 (UTC)

Where to make server request(s)?

Hello,

I didn't see any helpful links to where one would request specific server maintenance tasks. Specifically, a couple months ago, there was a nightmarish crash; since then on en.Wiktionary.org, some periodic maintenance tasks don't seem to be happening. I suspect some cron jobs got commented out during the recovery? At any rate, Wiktionary's wikt:Special:shortpages for example, has not been updated in quite some time. (Also, where would I request that it be updated more frequently, say once a week, or twice a month?) Thanks in advance. --Connel MacKenzie 07:05, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Notice for readers of dutch newspaper

In a very important Dutch-Flemish newspaper there is a very nice article about the Dutch Wikipedia in the edition of this weekend. In the article the have printed the url "meta.wikimedia.org" . The link on the on the mainpage of Meta is to help the new vistors to not get lost and find there way to the dutch Wikipedia. This because Meta is very confusing to a new visitor who thinks this is a encycopedia. Please keep it there for the weekend. --Walter 23:01, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

It is removed now --Walter 09:22, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Is there where we ask questions about mediawiki ?

Or is there a forum type thing out there ?

I just started using mediawiki, and it is pretty cool. Often time I want to create many pages with
the same outline, so I'd like to use templates.

To do this I went to http://example.com/wiki/Template:Project, and created a page.

Now everytime I want to start a new page I want to create a new project page I want it to
inherit everything from Template:Project.

I tried calling {{Project}} from within the newly created page, but this sort of creates a link
to the Template:Project. If I modify something in this page it modifies Template:Project.

I don't get it.

Any help ?

TIA,

Why "MediaWiki" link is an external link?

In Section "Code & technical issues" the MediaWiki link is considered as external link (but it link to the same site). Is it a typo?

NO. It was intentional and necessary. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 07:26, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ido on the Www.wiktionary.org template

Hi - I've been asking about this for quite some time now but perhaps this is a better place to make the request. The Ido Wiktionary has the 5th most number of words and it would be nice to see it added to the front as well. Most articles are just the word and its translation into Ido, that's true, but that is what we most need at this time, a large searchable database with every language available.444

Embedding WikiMedia content in a standard website

Is it possible to embed WikiMedia content in a perl/php enabled website without installing wiki software? I know I could use an IFRAME but that would include the WikiMedia side menu as well. --gorgan_almighty 16:09, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

yes, but we will block your site from accessing our content, because it's not allowed. download the database from http://dumps.wikimedia.org/ and host it yourself, instead of wasting our (very limited) resources. kate

Moldovan_Wikipedia

This mo.wikipedia.org is not a wikipedia in a language like any others. There are very heated debates about it, mostly at that encyclopedia itself, and recently, I did a post at en:Wikipedia:Village_pump (policy)#Moldovan_Wikipedia where one can read why this is such an issue.

People have different opinions about whether this mo.wikipedia should exist or not, but what they agree on that there must be some public discussion on it.

Where to do it, and how to do it that's the big question. Should it start as request for comment (where?), should it be a vote for deletion (where?)? Feedback is much appreciated; I am not sure if ever before the question of existence of an entire wikipedia language branch was put into question. en:Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 16:16, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Take a look at the Kashmiri Wikipedia, it's even more heated. Mithridates 05:55, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

PHP scripts in MediaWiki pages

Hey guys. I'm a sysop at a small wiki called "N at Wikicites" (InterWiki prefix: wikicities:c:N:). This wiki is about a game called N. It has 500 levels in 100 episodes and every level and episode has its own highscore. It's nearly impossible to manage this huge amount of highscores manually so I thought about a PHP script to read the highscores from a database server.

I tried a small Hello World PHP script in the sandbox of the german Wikipedia but it didn't work. The code <?php echo "Hello World..." ?> was displayed instead of the expected output (Hello World...). A nowiki section didn't solve the problems. What can I do?

-- Lord of Destiny -- 80.184.190.34 18:39, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Allowing execution of arbitrary PHP code from within a wiki page would be a major security hole, hence it isn't permitted. You might find it's possible to write an extension to do what's needed, and persuade Wikia to install it for your wiki. Rob Church (talk) 18:09, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Recent changes

I just noticed that on the recent changes we have a list of the following:

Pedia: af ar bg ca da de el en eo es et fi fr fy he hi hr id it ja ko la lv mi ms nl nn no pl pt ro ru s sl sr sv zh Wiktionary: ar ca cs de el en eo es fi id it ja ko la lb lv nl no pl pt ro ru sl sq sr sv zh

Welsh Wiktionary

I've tried asking on the Talk:developer page but it seems pretty dormant so I thought I'd ask here. I'm the bureacrat and a sysop on the Welsh Wiktionary and I have a few requests.

Change the namespaces:

  • Wiktionary to Wiciadur
  • Sgwrs Wiktionary to Sgwrs Wiciadur
  • Help to Cymorth
  • Help talk to Sgwrs Cymorth
  • Category to Categori
  • Category talk to Sgwrs Categori

Give the prefixes Atodiad, WiciSawrws, Cymraeg, Odliadur and Mynegair the same non-entry status as Wiktionary_Appendix / Appendix, WikiSaurus, Rhymes and Concordance on the English Wiktionary.

Put in sensitivity, like other wiktionaries, so that entries can begin with a small letter.

Change the project title from Wiktionary to Wiciadur.

Thanks in advance to anyone who'll take care of this, --Adam7davies 13:01, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
