Hello everyone. I hope it's not too early to think about the December meetup. Wikimedia UK are thinking about having a Christmas party in London for our community, and we were leaning towards 10th December. We've got a board meeting that day so we would have trustees around and it would be a chance for people to meet them. But that would land it very close to the meetup on the second Sunday of the month (11th). How would you meetup folks feel about having the party that close, or would there be an option to roll the two events into one? Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 12:30, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

| Maybe roll them into one? That would be easier._ CyanoTex (talk) 12:34, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I can't commit to anything until the staff rota for w/c 5 December gets posted, which based upon recent form, will be 4 December. But Saturdays are almost certainly out. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 12:55, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Is a Christmas Party the same thing as a meetup? Gordo (talk) 13:10, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I should think so, though I'm not up to speed with the London meetup's policy on festive headgear. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 16:31, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. Anyway, some of us more likely to celebrate en:Saturnalia... Gordo (talk) 20:48, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've already got a Christmas party on the 10th (which is likely to be an all-day thing - one year we visited Northumberland Park Depot for example), so I'd prefer if WMUK's party wasn't that day so I don't have to choose between them but without knowing details of either it's not something I can say definitely regarding. Thryduulf (talk: meta · en.wp · wikidata) 21:53, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, dates are already in diaries for Christmas Parties. WMUK's event will be very different from the Meetup. BTW, Wetherspoons Christmas fayre is very low quality, with "turkey pie" replacing turkey. Gordo (talk) 08:52, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds like people are busy on 10th. How do people feel about merging the events and having them on the 11th? Nothing firm at this stage, I'm just trying to work out what the options are. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 17:30, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

10th or 11th would be fine with me currently. Richard Nevell (WMUK) You'll probably get more responses from people if you contact them on English Wikipedia, where most of us are active. Joseph2302 (talk) 22:09, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And the email list? Gordo (talk) 09:06, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I certainly intend to be meeting with Wikipedia folk on the 11th, whether that is at the meetup at WMUK's Christmas party, both or some combination of the two I don't really mind. As long as I know the time and venue in advance that is! Thryduulf (talk: meta · en.wp · wikidata) 19:12, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm also busy on the 10th. No objection to having the 11th billed as some sort of WMUK London meetup joint event at the Penderel's Oak; We've had several previous such dos including an AGM. Will WMUK be buying a cake or were you thinking of putting something behind the bar? I haven't been following WMUK for a while, what is your current line on paying for alcohol? WereSpielChequers (talk) 21:59, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Meetup/London/113 is happening! Gordo (talk) 20:15, 11 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Either 10 or 11 December - both are fine for me. Edwardx (talk) 19:55, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I could do Saturday as well- but doubt the sanity of getting a train into central London two shopping Saturdays before Xmas! --ClemRutter (talk) 21:21, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all, I think it makes sense for Wikimedia UK to piggyback on the existing London meetup, rather than hold an event on the same weekend, if that is OK with everyone? We can put some money behind the bar for drinks and arrange some kind of Christmas nibbles (apparently Wetherspoon is doing mince tarts this year, although how they differ from mince pies I don't know)...please could you let me know by the weekend if you have any objections to this. Thanks! Lucy LucyCrompton-Reid (WMUK) (talk) 15:15, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@LucyCrompton-Reid (WMUK): I've only just seen this message, so sorry for the late reply, but I have no problem with this at all. Thryduulf (talk: meta · en.wp · wikidata) 14:20, 19 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Pies have lids, tarts don't. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 22:41, 19 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification! The Wetherspoon tarts are apparently 'finished with a pastry star on top'. Ambiguous at best, I would say. LucyCrompton-Reid (WMUK) (talk) 13:09, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for absence![edit]

Dear all, Very sorry I didn't make it to London yesterday - I had a bit of a gardening incident whilst hacking at some rhododendrons and put my back out. I hope you had a nice catch-up! I look forward to seeing any of you that can make it to the Bedlam sessions (there's still space on Saturday if you'd like to come!) or the history of the NHS session on Tuesday 22nd, and to seeing everyone else on the 11th Dec! Zeromonk (talk) 09:51, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that rhododendrons are the most dangerous shrub. Gordo (talk) 17:02, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No it's poison ivy. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 21:10, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
