Talk:Requests for comment/Welcoming policy
Add topicwere the affected communities informed?
[edit]Hi, I might have overlooked something, but were the communities affected informed about this RfC? Ghilt (talk) 08:23, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
- All registered users at any wiki can be affected by welcome messages to users with no edits. There are currently 1046 wikis at Special:SiteMatrix although a few are closed for editing. I made the proposed policy but not the RfC and I don't know practice about notifications. I only posted a notification to my home wiki (which is also the largest) at w:Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Archive 198#Global welcoming policy. If "affected communities" means wikis which currently make widespread welcome messages to users without edits then I think we would get biased participation if we only try to find and notify those who make controversial posts and not the recipients who are often at other wikis. Trying to notify around 1000 wikis seems excessive. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:09, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think it's justified for an RfC like this given that they are the projects that would be most affected. MassMessage should make this straightforward. Leaderboard (talk) 12:29, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
Informing affected wikis
[edit]I'm drafting the below MassMessage with the subject "Global discussion on Welcome messages" to the following targets:
What do you think? Pinging those involved in previous requests for closure of this RfC, which didn't happen due to the lack of notification: @Pppery, Johannnes89, A smart kitten, Xaosflux, and DreamRimmer: Aaron Liu (talk) 20:06, 29 August 2025 (UTC)
Edits blocked by filters
[edit]What if users try to edit but the edits are blocked by filters? On Commons many filters are not against vandalism but to prevent accidental damage. User who hit a filter should get a welcome message as they need information where to find help. GPSLeo (talk) 15:15, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
- If a user edit is blocked by a filter, the filter message should tell them what to do (eg it should point them to an administrator noticeboard or a place to report edit filter issues). Leaderboard (talk) 17:26, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
