From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Status[edit]

This section is for tracking purposes. If you would like to comment, please do so below the box. Task checklist:

  1. Localization complete; [10 April 2007]
  2. Interface exported to message files (Nikerabbit); [10 April 2007]
  3. Subcommittee approval; [11 April 2007]
  4. Board approval; [25 April 2007]
  5. Creation (developers). [06 May 2007]

Summary report:

To the board:

The language subcommittee recommends the creation of a Kabyle Wikipedia (see the request). This language is well-established, has a very wide audience, a large interested community, a unanimous discussion on Meta, a successful test project, an almost complete Kabyle interface, and a standard code.

Further information can be found on the request page, its discussion page, and the subcommittee archives.

To the developers: Please create kab.wikipedia, enable Special:Import on kab.wikipedia from fr.wikipedia and en.wikipedia, and install the following extensions: CategoryTree, Cross-namespace links, MakeBot, Makesysop, Renameuser, CharInsert, Cite, ImageMap, ParserFunctions, Poem, Newuserlog, SpamBlacklist, and Username Blacklist.

Some of the code to do so in LocalSettings.php is provided below for convenience (copied verbatim from the instructions); it may need to be tweaked to work with Wikimedia's setup. To simplify future such requests, feel free to paste the actual code required for the above somewhere or link me to it.

We're still waiting for board approval; the Executive Secretary has promised a decision in 2–3 more days. The board will simultaneously consider extending the subcommittee's authority to approve projects without board approval, so we can avoid these long delays. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:40:11, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Board approval just received, contacting the developers for creation. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:25:05, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Kabyle language[edit]

Bad orthography[edit]

A big problem with a Kabyle version of WP is the lack of people able to write out it in a correct way according to the standard orthography. I looked at some pages and found out a lot of misspellings. The fact is, that only in recent times the language has been taught in schools, while a lot of speakers have never learnt writing it, so they make a big effort trying to write it without a convenable knowledge. For instance, in the article Iqbayliyen of the "test encyclopedia" one easily notices:

  • At the very beginning Amezruy n agdud Azwaw instead of n wegdud (annexed state)
  • later on: yemut s tidets instead of yemmut s tidet
  • many occurrences of le letter ţ instead of tt: ţlaεin (ttlaεin), andaţ (anda-tt), tidiţ (tidet), ţnadin (ttnadin), yeţwebnan (yettwebnan) and so on
  • many inconsistencies (e.g. s tidets and s tidiţ instead of s tidet)
  • lack of "traits d'union", e.g. in andaţ and andat (resp. anda-tt and anda-t.

Pay attention: my critics don't aim at rejecting the project. I simply emphasize a real problem which must be taken into account if one wants a "true" wikipedia in kabyle and not just a "token version" without a true value. I'd like to see a good and useful encyclopedia. (I am Italian and I see the very low level of some versions of WP in Italian dialects: I fear the risk that a Kabyle WP becomes something alike).

In my opinion, before starting a taq or kab wiki it would be useful a "training period", during which possible contributors try to write articles and closely check them as far as the orthography is concerned. (Not only this: if you look at the content of many articles, they are not NPOV and should be re-written in many instances. E.g.: "adgud Azwaw atan dagi andaţ Roma?" "The kabyle people are still there, but where are the Romans?" or "I wid mazal ur numin ara agdud Azwaw atan mazal dagi! " "And there still exist people who don't believe the Kabyle people still survive!"...).

Anyway, I strongly support the project. --213.140.6.119 13:49, 19 November 2006 (UTC) (it:Utente:Vermondo)[reply]

That's great, an italian who speaks and writes Kabyle better than me! As for the orthography, I think we should set up a team of "spell checkers" Toira 18:05, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As all non-normative languages you are going to have an adaptation period in which you will have to form a stable base. I would suggest you to start from choosing a list of publications that can be used as an external reference for orthographic correction, if such texts exist. Just saying I know better will give you lots of edit wars and personal conflicts, a clear rule is always more likely to produce a stable community. When no such texts are available it might help if you have a section in the project where you explain the basic rules you are going to use. Be prepared to a number of discussions, as quite often people want to have one local version prevail on another. It takes a bit of patience and a lot of diplomacy. IMHO local variants in non-normative linguistic entities should always be allowed by trying to build up a form in which they remain mutually understandable. That's not a rule, just a bit of personal experience that hopefully will help you in reducing internal conflicts.
In my native wiki we have basically your problems: ~2m millions of native speakers, no schools in the language, non normative language, a use of the language that has become mostly oral. We found out that it helped to use templates to have all pages encapsulated in a structure that delivers information on how to read our script and where and how to get texts, vocabularies, etc. Since the two main branches of our native speakers are one in the European Alps and the other in the South American Pampa Gringa we adopted a double instruction page in Italian and Spanish. Maybe you will want to have a French and an Arab version, to maximize your reach.
The marketing of us small communities is pretty much experimental, and I’m sure the experience you make with Kabyle wiki will teach us all a lot. Feel free to request all the help you may need. If you need assistance to make a Kabyle keyboard just let me know, I also can host any software (it's not possible here) that will help people in writing in Kabyle or in any other non-normative linguistic entity. Good luck to you :) --Bèrto 'd Sèra 10:45, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes we need your help!! but how do we provide a double interface (Kabyle/French)? also we're trying to avoid neologisms when it's possible (and loanwords from french/arabic), as for the keyboard we already have one for the french layout but not for an english layout, also, we would like to add special caracters in the toolbar and display them properly under IE without entering an html code all the time. (No problem under Firefox) Agurzil 11:56, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Users can set the interface language in their preferences, so a user could see a French interface on the Kabyle Wikipedia if they preferred. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:04:34, 08 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure if writing tt instead of ţ is a good choice. Even if i personnally prefer ţ, which is not ambigous, that's not the question : I understand this is the latest convention, but "ţ" seems to be, I think, the widest usage in kabyle litterature. Perhaps we should wait before using tt. Perhaps I'm wrong :) Ayadho 12:49, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway, is it possible to see, without ambiguity, when "tt" mean ts, and when it simply mean "tt" ? Ayadho 14:47, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Berber linguists have decided so, better leave it that way and have a standardized writing than improvising, at their last congress they have removed t and z with cedillas and the emphatic R. There is never an ambiguity between two words, of course you need to know the words where tt=t with tensione, "dz" "ts" are not generalized in all kabylie, in some areas they just pronounce z/t with a tension. As for "dzayer", just write dzayer! Agurzil 04:27, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I just said we have the choice between the widely used writing (which is not an improvising one, but the previous standard, isn't it ?), and the latest one. It's ok for me, for any choice. When did happened the latest congress ? Is there some url about it ? To understand for example why emphatic R was removed. Ar tufat. Ayadho 08:06, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar[edit]

I've noticed some grammar problems. Possesives "adjectives" (inu, etc.) are meant to be sticked white a hyphen "-". For example, "Cfu γef yisem n umseqdac inu di uselkim-agi" should be written : "Cfu γef yisem n umseqdac-inu di uselkim-agi". I prefer to get confirmation here before touching Arguzil's translation work. Ayadho 09:05, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not my sole work, i was sent many of the translations by mail, there is no error : inu/inek are independant pronouns, not suffixes, so we write :axxam-iw, axxam inu. If you want to retouch the translations you need to 1-register, 2-Ask for translator status [1] 3-wait for approval 4-translate.Agurzil 04:51, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Mmh... I have some kabyle litterature at home, and I read "-inu". This book is written in old style (emphatic r, cedilla, etc.). But it's ok, if this is the true wrinting... I'm now registered :) Ayadho 08:00, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You did not ask for translator priviledges here. I've changed all greek gammas γ/Γ into latin gammas ɣ/Ɣ, i've also changed Greek epsilons into ƹ/Ƹ, if you have time, change ƹ/Ƹ into latin epsilons ɛ/Ɛ : I've done exactly what I've told you not to do : improvising. (Salem chaker uses ɣ/Ɣ and ɛ/Ɛ), I'm going to change all γ/Γ into latin gammas ɣ/Ɣ and all ε/Σ into latin epsilon ɛ/Ɛ on the incubator, feel free to help me DONE.Agurzil 06:00, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Err... Okay, I haven't read it entirely before to answer below, in the related section. Ayadho 07:46, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Localization[edit]

Congratulations and thank you to the Kabyle community; the Kabyle Wikipedia is only one step away from creation. Before the wiki can be created, we need to translate the main interface messages. This page will serve as a place for centralized discussion and coordination, while the actual translation will be on the BetaWiki (see BetaWiki instructions and a full list of Kabyle interface messages). If you have any problems, comments, suggestions, or questions, feel free to post below and we will be sure they are addressed.

While it would be even better to translate the entire interface, some of it isn't very important and can be translated later. Since the Kabyle Wikipedia will be the first wiki in a new language created since the language subcommittee was established, we need your help determining which messages should be translated. If you see any messages you think don't need to be translated, feel free to mention them here.

The following messages don't need translation before final approval (although you are free to translate them anyway). The * symbol followed by a number means that several messages beginning with that are unneeded. For example, unlock* (6) means that six messages with names starting with "unlock" (unlockdb, unlockdbtext, unlockconfirm, unlockbtn, unlockdbsuccesssub, and unlockdbsuccesstext) are unneeded.

  • common* (2)
  • edittools
  • exif-* (273)
  • export* (7)
  • feed* (2)
  • import* (27)
  • lock* (8)
  • mainpagedocfooter
  • mainpagetext
  • metadata* (6)
  • monobook* (2)
  • pagetitle
  • unlock* (6)

I can't emphasize this enough: if you have any problems, comments, suggestions, or questions, feel free to post below and we will be sure they are addressed. There's no reason for anyone to be confused or uncertain if we can help it. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 04:04:29, 01 April 2007 (UTC) (updated 04 April)

It has been decided that I will enter all the messages, the others translate them and send them to me, as of now, I have entered 60% of what is required, i'm just waiting for the rest of the translations. I hope that by the end of the week it will be 100%.Agurzil 11:50, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unneeded messages[edit]

I did not find these : export (7) import (27) lock (8) metadata (6) unlock (6) Agurzil 12:12, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of messages we think are not necessary for the moment:

unsigned by Agurzil 12:12, 4 April 2007.

Thank you; I've added those to the list of unneeded messages. The ones you are missing don't exist; the * symbol in the list means that any message beginning with that is unneeded. For example, unlock* (6) means that six messages with names starting with "unlock" (unlockdb, unlockdbtext, unlockconfirm, unlockbtn, unlockdbsuccesssub, and unlockdbsuccesstext) are unneeded. I've added an explanation to the list. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:04:28, 04 April 2007 (UTC)
How about "protect" messsages, I've seen that even the french interface has some untranslated "protect" messages.Agurzil 20:55, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Those are part of the administration interface, and should be translated eventually. If you expect all Kabyle Wikipedia administrators in the near future to understand English, feel free to leave them until after the wiki is created. They can be translated later before the approval of the Kabyle Wiktionary. —{admin} Pathoschild 00:04:04, 07 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok, i'll do this later, how aboy the message: "talk", I did not find it.Agurzil 13:49, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The "talk" message seems to be translated already as Amyannan. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:04:01, 07 April 2007 (UTC)
Not that one, I mean the one that appears in the right column (as opposed to left), i've checked all of them in the french, german, spanish and arabic wiki (in all types of messages, core and non-core message), it does not appear in the right column, does betawiki really display all the messages? Agurzil 22:31, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think that's the one you're looking for. The default for that message is "Discussion", which some projects may have shortened to "Talk". —{admin} Pathoschild 23:04:45, 07 April 2007 (UTC)
So why is it untranslated? fro example, in the french interface the talk message (left column) is translated as "Discussion" whereas "talk" (on the right column, which i could'n find in none of the translations) is translated as "Discuter".Agurzil 12:48, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think I can answer that. There is following line in the code: $talkLinkText = $wgLang->getNsText( NS_TALK ); // FIXME. — Nikerabbit 12:58, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But how do i find it on betawiki? i'd like it to be translated as "Meslay". Agurzil 13:06, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I added a new message talkpagelinktext. — Nikerabbit 13:34, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Finished[edit]

The translation is finished, as of now, i did not translate all the administrative messages such as protect/undelete/rollback/ipblock (see discussion above with pathoschild), only few of them where translated, I'v translated most of the import and export messages (even though you said it is unneeded). If you believe that I have forgotten compulsary messages, please list them in this sub-section.

I hope that the kabyle wikipedia will soon be set up, because it really needs a "revival". I'd like to thank the board for it's help and assistance, especially pathoschild who have done an excellent bureaucrat's job.(sorry for my approximative english)Agurzil 12:56, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I will bring this up with the subcommittee, and I think there will be no opposition to recommending the creation of the Kabyle Wikipedia tomorrow. However, a few points below need to be addressed for the developers. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:04:54, 08 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks Agurzil. I apologize not to have answered quickly to your invitation, Pathoschild, I have not be able to access Internet for a week. Ayadho 09:54, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway, searcharticle is translated into Ruḥ.. "Nadi yiwen usetbar" does not fit ? Ayadho 08:24, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since it must fit on a button, it needs to be very short. That is the text of the "Go" button for the sidebar search box. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:25:21, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Okay... I believed it was the Search button. But what is the difference between searcharticle and go messages ? Thanks. Ayadho 09:56, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The difference is simple, if you type "italy" and click on "go"/"consulter" (ruḥ- I've chosen to translate the english word) you'll access the article "itlay", while if you click on "search"/"rechercher" (nadi) it'll display all the articles containing the word "italy". BTW you can try the kabyle interface on the french wiki, Préférences - Langue de l’interface - kab (taqbaylit). Give it a try and tell me what you think about it.Agurzil 12:05, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, the buttons are indeed called "Ruḥ" and "Nadi" respectively. I knew their purpose, my question was actually about another point : I don't still understand why searcharticle and go interface messages are both transtlated into Ruḥ. What do they refer to ? Ar tufat. Ayadho 08:57, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I also don't know the difference, I thnik the second one is never used, however all wikipeida interfaces use one message for the two messages. Agurzil 04:43, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Namespace translations[edit]

Nikerabbit tells me that the final localization needed are the namespaces. Could you translate the following table? Sorry for the oversight. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:04:54, 08 April 2007 (UTC)

Could you please give the translation in french of one of the namespaces: Wikipedia_talk (for example), i just wan't to know if it is : wikipedia-talk, or wikipedia-discussion or discussion-of -wikipedia or discussion-about-wikipedia.Agurzil 19:11, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The French translation is Discussion_Wikipédia. Grammatically, the best inflection would refer to discussion about the Wikipedia page. The exact grammar isn't all that important, since all the possibilities you mentioned would be okay, as long as it is consistent for all talk namespaces. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:47:16, 08 April 2007 (UTC)

Final details[edit]

Extensions[edit]

Are there any extensions you would like to install? Installing them now will circumvent the very long waiting times that existing projects experience. Some extensions I would recommend, which are used on the English Wikipedia:

Special pages
CategoryTree Adds the [+] expand links, as in w:Category:Categories by topic.
Cross-namespace links Lists links across namespaces that generally shouldn't exist on Wikimedia projects.
MakeBot Allows bureaucrats to grant and revoke bot permissions.
Makesysop Allows bureaucrats and stewards to modify user levels.
Renameuser Allows bureaucrats to rename a user (need renameuser right).
Parser hooks
CategoryTree AJAX based gadget to display the category structure of a wiki (see example)
CharInsert Allows the creation of a JavaScript box for inserting non-standard characters.
Cite Adds <ref[ name=id]> and <references /> tags, for citations (see example).
ImageMap Allows client-side clickable image maps using <imagemap> tag.
ParserFunctions Allow basic programming functions (such as {{#if:}} or {{#time}}).
Poem adds <poem> tag for poem formatting (example).
Other
Newuserlog adds a log of account creations to Special:Log.
SpamBlacklist Regex-based antispam tool using the Spam blacklist on Meta.
Username Blacklist Restrict the creation of user accounts matching one or more regular expressions.

{admin} Pathoschild 18:04:45, 08 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes it seems fine to me but could we inherit (as in java ;-) ) the templates from the english and french wikipedia? Agurzil 19:14, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I meant, yes it's a good idea to install them.Agurzil 19:15, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You want to use templates that exist only on the English and French Wikipedia (as is done with images from the Wikimedia Commons)? I don't think this is currently possible, and is probably unlikely to be implemented due to cross-wiki vandalism and caching problems. If you want to import all templates from the English and French Wikipedia, this would be possible but extremely messy.
Perhaps a better idea would be to enable Special:Import from those wikis, which would allow an administrator to copy a template with the full edit history. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:04:10, 08 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok thanks for the information. Agurzil 19:55, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Diacritics[edit]

Unicode[edit]

There is something i nearly forgot : the diacritics letters de not appear under Internet explorer, those are : ẓ,ṭ,ṣ,ḍ,ḥ / ẓ,ṭ,ṣ,ḍ,ḥ. If the develeppors do not know how to force IE using unicode, then just use this font : div style="font-family:Arial Unicode MS, Tahoma;

Also, we want a toolbar for special caracters : ẓ Ẓ ṭ Ṭ ṣ Ṣ ḍ Ḍ ğ Ğ ḥ Ḥ č Č γ Γ ε Σ, / ẓ Ẓ ṭ Ṭ ṣ Ṣ ḍ Ḍ ğ Ğ ḥ Ḥ č Č γ Γ ε Σ . Agurzil 19:23, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The toolbar is possible with the CharInsert extension mentioned above. The actual characters included can be edited on-Wiki by editing MediaWiki:Edittools. I'll be glad to help you set it up if you need help after the wiki is created. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:04:30, 08 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok thanks! how about the unicode problem? Agurzil 19:46, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You can change the default font by editing MediaWiki:Common.css; I'll be glad to help with that too. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:54:44, 08 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks again! all problems solved, expect to be bothered! Agurzil 19:56, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, there are theses ones on the French Wikipédia : Ɛ Č Ḍ Ğ Ḥ Γ(Ɣ) Ṛ Ṣ Ṭ Ț Ẓ Ž / ε č ḍ ğ ḥ ɣ ṛ ṣ ṭ ţ ẓ ž. For example "ž" is useful to write Lžayer. Ayadho 07:59, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway, developpers can force Unicode charset into <META> HTML element. Ayadho 09:20, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Character choice[edit]

Σ/Ɛ/Ƹ

I've swtiched my french interface into kabyle one to check some mispells :) I see the upper case of yaε letter (= arabic ﻉ, "ʿayn") in Σass asebtar-agi is in fact a big sigma Σ. On the interface, the big sigma is automatically turned into a small one, σ, instead of ε : σass asebtar-agi. I suggest to use Ɛ instead of Σ. Ayadho 09:20, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, it is stupid to use two different letters : Sigma/Epsilon for yaε, People (me included) are using Sigma for the capital form cause epsilon has the same capital form as E. The letter you propose is not suitable, it is a vowel, i've found a consonant derived from the arabic letter ﻉ : ƹ/Ƹ (it is used on the riffian wikipedia test).
It's a vowel, but according to Berber Latin alphabet, Ɛ/ɛ is the used chararacter. It seems that it's called latin epsilon, whose uppercase is not as E, but Ɛ. I haven't see ƹ/Ƹ used on kabyle litterature, and personnaly, as it's not a rounded shaped letter, it disturbs me. Anyway, it's just my personal feeling. Ayadho 07:44, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
ɣ/Ɣ
Also, I think we should not use the gamma letter, but rather this letter ɣ/Ɣ (also used on the riffian wikipedia), I believe we should only use the extended-latin script. (epsilon and gammar belong to the greek alphabet). We'll make a vote and if everybody agrees we'll use a bot to replace all the caracters (past and future contributions.) Agurzil 04:39, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For ɣ/Ɣ, I proposed it above, but not explicitely instead of gamma letter. You're right, we have to use only one form. Ayadho 07:44, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unicode again[edit]

Concerning Unicode, I once took part in a Colloquium in Boumerdès (2000), and maybe someone of you can read more details on the subject in the article appeared in the Acts (Vermondo Brugnatelli, "Tamazight et Unicode. La standardisation dans le domaine des ordinateurs", in: Mohand Oulhadj Laceb (éd.), Actes du colloque international ‘Tamazight face aux défis de la modernité’ (Boumerdès 15-17 juillet 2002), Alger 2002, pp. 215-227). As an appendix, my article has a list of Unicode letters needed in an amazigh keyboard. I copy now the list, containing the Unicode codes of letters different from the usual ones :

Il serait à prevoir aussi bien des signes qui, bien que déconseillés par les séminaires de l’INALCO, ont été utilisés quand même par nombre d’usagers, par exemple :

  • Ț 0162 (latin capital letter T with cedilla)
  • ţ 0163 (latin small letter t with cedilla)
      • Romanian, Semitic transliteration, ...

En dehors des lettres de l’alphabet latin (comprises dans la série “Controls and Basic Latin”, de 0000 à 007F), les lettres Č et č (ainsi que Ț et ţ) ont été définies dans le sous-ensemble dit “Latin Extended-A” (codes compris entre 0100 et 017F); Ğ, ğ, Ɣ et Ɛ dans “Latin Extended-B” (de 0180 à 024F); ɣ et ε dans “IPA Extensions” (de 0250 à 02AF), tandis que Ḍ, ḍ, Ḥ, ḥ, Ṛ, ṛ, Ṣ, ṣ, Ṭ, ṭ, Ẓ et ẓ sont compris dans la série “Latin Extended Additional” (de 1E00 à 1EFF).

I hope it is useful. --213.140.6.119 19:05, 1 May 2007 (UTC) (it:Utente:Vermondo)[reply]
