Sounds like a good idea. Seraphimblade (talk) 16:43, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

Agree. In support, Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 10:55, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Agreed. I think this would be quite beneficial. Vermont (talk) 22:47, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
I actually disagree, on the grounds that such a newsletter would end up having significant perverse incentives. Very little of the core mission of Wikipedia involves diversity (mainly the topic selection) and I'm fine with those areas being improved in the name of diversity, but anything beyond this will bite Wikimedia in the arse as the communities "pander to the newsletter" regardless of how much of an improvement or detriment this is to the projects. Separate project, sub-project of a parent project, or mailing list?[edit]

This draft doesn't say whether the proposed recommendation will be a separate proposed project, a sub-project of a project (like Wikipedia), or a mailing list. BTW, doesn't Wikipedia already have Signpost, which used to be weekly but now reduced to monthly mostly due to declining number of staff? Also, would the diversity newsletter have the same fate as Signpost, which (again) is a monthly newsletter? George Ho (talk) 05:15, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

+1 on George Ho. --Sannita - not just another it.wiki sysop 17:55, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
I also would like to know: who is supposed to write it? Who decides about the content of the newsletter? Ziko (talk) 10:10, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

support We already have several such letters, education newsletter, GLAM one, research one etc. Having one diversity related seems like a good idea to me. It could operate in a similar way to the GLAM NL ([1]) Anthere (talk)

User pages?[edit]

"The aim of developing user pages is not to encourage personal relationships but to facilitate coordination and assess the community diversity." I wonder about this sentence. How does it relate to the "recommendation"? I don't see anything about user pages in the text above. What does "developing user pages" mean? Ziko (talk) 10:09, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

Oppose another monthly or more frequent publication[edit]

Found out that mw:Newsletter:The Community Tech Newsletter has been stalled since January this year. Another newsletter is not something I can support. This requires a lot of effort and resources to help the proposed publication survive. Look at Signpost and GLAM newsletter. They are monthly. I'm worried about how much resource the editors would obtain to maintain that frequency. If the frequency of the diversity newsletter will be quarterly or bi-annually, then I might support. Indeed, I can't support but rather oppose another monthly, weekly or daily newsletter. George Ho (talk) 09:20, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Wikimedia Space[edit]

After reading this page, I have created a diversity tag in Wikimedia Space, which was missing indeed. Thank you for the inspiration! I wholeheartedly agree with the goal of this recommendation. However, I am dubious that a newsletter is the ideal format to distribute news nowadays, even less when targeting readers underrepresented in our movement. Support[edit]

This seems like a fine idea. I'm not sure it really needs to be part of this whole long strategy process, can't someone interested just be bold and make it? the wub "?!" 23:32, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
