TWLight

[edit]

If I try to log in to the library, I see a message to say "TWLight needs permission to access information, including your email address, on meta.wikimedia.org". Who or what is TWLight, and what am I being asked to agree to here?

The message doesn't say what information TWLight intends to access, or what purpose it, or any third party, would use it for. The page includes a link to the Wikimedia Foundation Privacy Policy, but this isn't much use when I don't know who I'm dealing with.

I tried to search for information about TWLight, but all I learnt was that a lot of people mis-spell "twilight".

Could anyone shed any light onto this for me? Thanks. Aoeuidhtns (talk) 23:31, 4 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Aoeuidhtns TWLight is the internal name of the library's software. The information the library will retrieve is simply public information about your account (e.g. username, edit count), plus your email address. We should perhaps rename the OAuth request to use the term 'The Wikipedia Library' instead, to avoid confusion, but I'm not sure if this is possible. Oxford Academic Access Problem

[edit]

I tried to access Oxford Academic through the link on the page. When it was re-directed to their site, it was not logged in. I clicked on the institutional sign in option and tried searching both Wikipedia and Wikimedia but nothing came up. Do we no longer have access or is this just a web issue? -- Lenny Marks (talk) 16:29, 6 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Lenny Marks Were you able to access content after being redirected to their site? You won't show up as logged in, but you should still be able to access items. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 16:16, 7 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Duration of Log-in

[edit]

When I log in to Wikipedia, I get asked if I want to stay logged in "for up to a year". Yet I seem to have to log in to TWL every new day that I want to use it.

Would it be possible to stay logged in for longer? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:06, 10 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing I took a look into this and it seems like the configuration is set to require login every three days. We have this setup because logging in is the best way for us to retrieve new data for username or email address changes users have made. Prior to this we only required login every two weeks, but it meant if users were renamed or changed their email address we weren't picking that up. We had assumed that because login is so quick (you just get redirected straight back into the library), that this wasn't a big deal. There might be a better way to do this, so I've filed a Phabricator ticket at T383627. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 20:49, 13 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Edward Elgar access appears to have expired

[edit]

See the report at phab:T379783, which has not been acknowledged for two months. — Pajz (talk) 10:47, 11 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

We have requested E-Elgar to renew our access for another year. I will update the Phab ticket as soon as we hear from them. Thanks. VSj (WMF) (talk) 06:25, 13 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
This should be working now. Thanks! VSj (WMF) (talk) 12:01, 13 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. It works. — Pajz (talk) 16:31, 13 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Taylor & Francis Full Text Appears Paywalled

[edit]

I'm trying to access the full text of an article on Taylor & Francis. The site indicates "Access provided by The Wikipedia Library". However, when I click on "Read this article" the paywall pops up. Mox La Push (talk) 00:30, 27 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Mox La Push, which article are you trying to access? Nikkimaria (talk) 04:05, 27 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your interest, Nikkimaria. I'm trying to access "Jacob H. Schiff becomes a Zionist". Mox La Push (talk) 00:53, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Doesn't look like that journal is on the title list for any of the collections listed on the Taylor & Francis page. You could suggest the access be expanded. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:41, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I didn't realize access was limited to a curated list. I have posted a suggestion to add the journal to the T&F collection. Mox La Push (talk) 04:11, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Actually, Studies in Zionism has been renamed as Journal of Israeli History. That journal is listed as part of the T&F Arts & Humanities collection. So, I'm still not sure why I can't access the Schiff article. --Mox La Push (talk) 04:19, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
If I search for the article through the Journal of Israeli History then it comes up as the first result but the text is still not accessible even though T & F indicates that "Access [is] provided by The Wikipedia Library".--Mox La Push (talk) 07:01, 29 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Mox La Push, if you look at https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/10/, it links to T&F's "Arts & Humanities Collection". T&F distinguishes its "Arts & Humanities Collection" from its "Arts & Humanities Archive". Here, collections are described as containing "content published since 1997". (The Arts and Humanities Archive would probably allow access to older issues.) If you click through the Journal of Israeli History volumes listed here, you'll notice that 1997 seems to be exactly the cut-off date and TWL seems to give full-text access to all later issues. So I guess that's the reason why you can't access the article. — Pajz (talk) 16:00, 29 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. That seems like a plausible explanation but for one possible caveat. According to T&F, the Schiff article was published online in 2008. Of course, if access is determined by the original print publication date then your explanation holds. Mox La Push (talk) 07:23, 30 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I've suggested the addition of Taylor & Francis Arts & Humanities Classic Archive here. No tracking number has been assigned yet.--Mox La Push (talk) 02:25, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Newspapers.com not working for me

[edit]

I was granted access to newspapers.com (for the first time) on Feb. 2. When I log in at newspapers.com on the unpaid account I've had for five years it still is offering me the 7 day free trial. Any suggestions? Davemc0 (talk) 06:13, 18 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Davemc0 Did you receive an email from Newspapers.com confirming that your account had been set up? Are you logging in with the email you provided us in your application? If you're not sure which one you used please email us at wikipedialibrary(_AT_)wikimedia.org and I can share it with you. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:06, 19 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm in the same boat as Davemc0 - coincidentally my application for accessing Newspapers.com was also approved on 2 February. However, I still have no access, no email from them and the status still reads "Sent to partner". Ajsmith141 (talk)
Same situation. It was approved at Wikipedia on February 2, but there is still no email from newspapers.com, and when I log in I still show an unpaid account offering a 7 day free trial. Phatblackmama (talk) 22:00, 27 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Me too! I haven't received an email from Newspapers.com yet. Sunnya343 (talk) 02:36, 1 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

EBSCOhost ebooks

[edit]

I was automatically logged in to the EBSCOhost eBook Collection when I visited on my phone (browser is set to auto login via the proxy when allowed). I was able to interact and search, but not download some books to read. Does Wikipedia have a subscription to the eBook Collection? Are there some sub-collections not included? (If they don't, I would love if it was added. They have a lot of hard to find books, that aren't included in the current Wikipedia subscriptions.)

When I try to login to the eBook Collection via my laptop (no automatic browser proxy) and select Wikipedia as my institution, my login information returns the message "We don't recognize that combination. Please try again or find your institution to access another way." I don't see a way to login via the Wikipedia Library site.

On my phone, logged into eBook Collection with my Wikipedia login, the error I get when I tap the download button on some books is "An error occurred. This eBook is unavailable right now. Please try again later." Pingnova (talk) 07:22, 20 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Pingnova EBSCO needs to be accessed via The Wikipedia Library proxy - attempting to log in on EBSCO's website won't work, unfortunately. With EBSCO we only have access to certain collections, which are listed here. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:04, 20 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Adding AI engines?

[edit]

Would it be possible to get the new AI/LLM engines added to TWL? I know all the arguments about why they're bad, but they're also useful for discovering things you've missed in the more conventional search engines, and then you can run those leads down to verify them against reliable sources.

Do you have a specific AI in mind? Nikkimaria (talk) 03:50, 24 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

The Hindu

[edit]

Hello! I was informed on 2 February that my application to use this source was approved. I followed the instructions in the email, but I was taken to a payment page that asked for credit card information and did not have a place for me to enter the voucher code. I didn't get around to exploring the issue further until today, when I came across the subscription page for The Hindu's e-paper which includes a link to the 1-year All-Access Pass. When I click that link, I am able to enter a coupon code, but the one provided doesn't work. Hopefully the code hasn't expired? Regards, Sunnya343 (talk) 02:32, 1 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

I have the same issue, although I didn't get any prompt to enter a coupon code. Soumyapatra13 (talk) 08:32, 6 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Sunnya343 and Soumyapatra13: We're looking into this - sometimes we can get the coupon code field to display and sometimes we can't, and it's not entirely obvious to us why. I'll let you know when we've figured it out! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:57, 7 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I clicked the redemption URL again and was taken to a different page, where I was able to enter the coupon code and it worked! Sunnya343 (talk) 03:06, 20 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for confirming. The partner has made some changes to the codes to work, so it should work for everyone now. VSj (WMF) (talk) 09:39, 20 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Cambridge University Press not Working

[edit]

Today I tried to access some books on Cambridge University Press, but in spite of the site saying "Authenticated by The Wikipedia Library", most books and articles that I've tried say they require access. Some chapters inside a book will allow access, such as [1], but the rest of the book requires access. Biologo-in-erba (talk) 09:03, 1 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I've got the same problem. But now it seems to work.

ISSN portal

[edit]

The ISSN portal subscription service would be very useful to improve Wikidata records for periodicals. Specifically, "Full ISSN Profile data (publisher, start year, end year, frequency, language, links to successor and past titles, etc.)". For current periodicals, this information is usually readily available elsewhere, but for more obscure discontinued works, this can be hard to find in other sources. "Simultaneous user limit" on Oxford resources

[edit]

Whenever I try accessing an entry in one of the Oxford resources, such as the ODNB or Grove Music Online, I encounter the following error: "The simultaneous user limit associated with your subscription has been exceeded. Please alert your librarian that you've received this message and inquire about increasing the number of simultaneous users. Thank you."

I know it was working as recently as three or four hours ago, as I was able to access an ODNB entry without issue. Sunshineisles2 (talk) 20:51, 7 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

This appears to be resolved for me.--Sunshineisles2 (talk) 01:00, 8 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Service issue with SAGE Journals?

[edit]

Instead of something like "access available" as one might expect, all journals I've tested so far on SAGE as of my most recent visit via WPL have "restricted access" for their paywalled articles instead. Я сошла с ума (talk) 03:16, 16 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Portal interface fix for Newspapers.com

[edit]

Please fix the "50 years of the New York Times" part on https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/my_library/. According to https://www.newspapers.com/paper/the-new-york-times/395/, they only have 1851-1922 for NYT. ~ ミラP@Miraclepine 17:57, 28 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Do you want it to say "72 years" instead? WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:03, 14 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Not sure if there would be much benefit to changing it, though it would be more accurate. Something like 50+ years, 70 years, or 70+ years would be sufficient if it needs to be changed at all. Cause I don't think it has to be pinpoint accurate for something like that. (If you really wanted to be accurate you would list the number of days that it covers. Please note that I am joking.) Sheriff U3 (talk) 04:53, 14 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Cannot access

[edit]

Hi, can you help me access Wiki library or find sources that can help me. I have made 500+ edits and my account is old enough to be eligible. A couple of weeks ago I submitted a request for access, but the submissions doesn't appear at the "My applications" subpage. Thank you! LastJabberwocky (talk) 12:02, 9 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

@LastJabberwocky, are you able to use other parts? For example, if you go to https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/91/ and click "Access Collection", it should send you to https://www-oxfordreference-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/ which is the main page for Oxford Research. If you put something like "ice cream" in the search box at the top of that page, does it give you search results?
I'm trying to learn whether the whole thing is broken for you, or if it's just the "My applications" page. WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:02, 14 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
@WhatamIdoing: When I click on any of the items in my collection, including Oxford research, it opens a new tab trying to redirect me to that source, but it doesn't redirect me keeping at this domain: (https://wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/login?auth=production&url=https://www.oxfordreference.com). It's probably worth mentioning that I got a notification about the library when made just under 500 edits, and thinking I met the qualifications I sent an application. When got over the 500 threshold, I sent another application. Thanks for your response! LastJabberwocky (talk) 05:44, 14 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Most of the sources don't require any kind of application. If you can use anything, you should be able to use about three-quarters of them. If you go to https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/ and login, do you see your username in the upper corner (next to the 'Log out' button) on the next page? WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:10, 15 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
@WhatamIdoing: I'm logged in I double-checked a couple of times. My other hypothesis (a touch paranoid one) is the library detects me as someone from Russia and loggs me in with Russian wiki where I don't have 500+ edits. I changed language from Russian to English but it didn't change the situation. Maybe I can contact someone who can reset my library status, then give it again? Like classis solution of restarting pc to solve most problems. LastJabberwocky (talk) 11:28, 15 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
The system doesn't care which wiki your edits are to. I don't know whether there is any sort of geolocation involved.
Resetting or whitelisting your account would probably require help from a developer. WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:40, 16 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Reliability of sources

[edit]

Are all the sources here considered reliable, or should I screen them like I would any other source I found? It varies by what the source is to support of course, but I am meaning on a more general basis. Also can a sources inclusion on the Library be used to show that it is a Reliable Source. (I am referring to the English Wikipedia policies when I say Reliable Source or just reliable.) Btw I am new to the Library. Sheriff U3 (talk) 02:51, 14 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Reliability varies by specific source and specific subject - something that is considered reliable in one context may not be in another. For example, on English Wikipedia, a particular source may meet en:WP:RS but not en:WP:MEDRS for medical claims. You should always assess any source, no matter how you find it. Nikkimaria (talk) 03:23, 14 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ok thanks! I noticed that it said at the top of the page:
"The Wikipedia Library allows active editors to access a wide range of collections of paywalled reliable sources for free!"
And so I didn't know if the sources were screened already or not. Will do my own assessment of reliability of the sources. And yes it definitely depends on context, sources for a blp article need to meet much higher standards then a source for an article about a car. Thanks again for your prompt answer! Sheriff U3 (talk) 04:34, 14 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Search is unnecessarily complex and not intuitive

[edit]

If I have the exact url of a journal article, or an index code such as DOI or JSTOR, I believe it should be dead simple to access the article - but the search function here wants a whole lot of details that must be entered absolutely letter perfect to work. Meanwhile back in 'pedia a DOI code or ISBN is all that is needed to automatically generate a complete citation. Can the ability to search by DOI (or ISBN, JSTOR etc) not be incorporated in search system here? Dodger67 (talk) 11:51, 29 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Dodger67: Searching by either DOI or JSTOR ID works - for example searching 25780831 brings up the article you requested. If you have an exact URL you can also add a proxy prefix (eg https://www.jstor.org/stable/25780831 -> https://wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/login?auth=production&url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/25780831), which should work if the article is available through that source. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:56, 30 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm also finding that searches by DOI do not work. (I also find the first (oclc.org) link in @Nikkimaria's reply doesn't work: " We are unable to validate your login credentials. " error while I'm logged in to the library. Also, searching TWL for 25780831 doesn't work for me for finding that disability article.) A search with the DOI or title of the article I'm looking for, a Lancet article, brings up a list of articles, but the one I'm looking for isn't near the top. Looking now, I see it is in the long list of results. So it did sort of work, eventually. I didn't realize 'till later. Adding the proxy prefix to the Lancet URL didn't work for me either.
It seems so strange that Search is unnecessarily complex and not intuitive - as @Dodger67 noted.
Yes, I know this thread was archived. Seems more useful to comment here than open a new thread. RememberOrwell (talk) 04:37, 15 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
RememberOrwell, I've moved this thread out of the archive. What Lancet article are you trying to find? Nikkimaria (talk) 00:51, 16 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
The Lancet is part of Elsevier, so you need to start with TWL's Elsevier ScienceDirect collection. WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:36, 16 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
My and @Dodger67's question is Can the ability to search by DOI (or ISBN, JSTOR etc) not be incorporated in search system here? Not how to find a particular article. Today your oclc link workaround that wasn't working, works.
Though how about we make a TWL search page with a bunch of fillable fields and buttons, one takes a JSOR ID and opens https://wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/login?auth=production&url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/<jstorid>, another takes a DOI,... RememberOrwell (talk) 02:38, 25 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don't think TWL uses its own search system. The box at the top seems to go to https://search.ebscohost.com/ Publishers that don't partner with EBSCO aren't searchable. It might be possible to write a script that could look at a DOI and figure out which publisher 'owns' that number. (@Headbomb would probably know whether that would usually be feasible.) But I don't think that ISBN would work. WhatamIdoing (talk) 08:26, 25 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
On enwiki, you can often just look up the DOI prefix. For example, en:10.1007 will take you to en:Springer Science+Business Media.
In general, there's an Index of DOI prefix at en:User:JL-Bot/DOI, build from CrossRef data. There are other DOI issuants out there, so it doesn't cover every case, but it covers the vast majority of them. Headbomb (talk) 14:30, 25 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Useful workarounds and a potential component of a fix. RememberOrwell (talk) 00:29, 29 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
But that's changeable. It does go there but it doesn't have to go there. It's not clear to me that it should. RememberOrwell (talk) 00:34, 29 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Can't access newspapers.com

[edit]

In February of 2024 I lost access to newspapers.com when they made a change. I reported it on Phabricator last April and was told it might not ever get fixed. In November I realized it was, applied, and was given access that should have extended to this November 17. However, I've lost access right around the anniversary of when I reported on Phabricator. This page shows my application to renew access. I've heard NOTHING in the interim and I don't know what to do or where to go. I'm trying to translate an article from a foreign language into English and I need access to newspapers.com to find sources in English. Gale

[edit]

I keep getting "403 Forbidden" errors with Gale, as of about 12 hours ago. I've logged out and back in, and I still can't get past the page with links to "Academic Onefile", "Biography", etc. And other people on Discord say they can access Gale fine.

Any idea what could be causing this? DS (talk) 04:39, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

As a workaround, you might check your local library's website to see whether they offer this. I'm pretty sure that most of the libraries in my area (California) have some sort of Gale subscription. WhatamIdoing (talk) 06:10, 3 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

I edit business topics on en.wikipedia. It would be desirable to have access to:

I did not realize there was a formal process for requesting new resources. I have submitted suggestions for the Wall Street Journal (Dow Jones), Bloomberg, The Economist and The Financial Times. It looks like there's a backlog of requests so I'll hold off on the others. --A. B. (talkcontribsglobal count) 03:30, 24 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Here resonating for many months, and thank you, @A. B., I finally understand the format threshold: go to Suggest and list target sources in your language.
Now, @WhatamIdoing, do you want to see:
  1. jawp community gear in and suggest any sources, or
  2. ja language Wikimedians come and enjoy The Wikipedia Library, as they will see sources in Japanese language, too ?
  3. I will note the Wikimedians of Japan User Group (WJUG), an affiliate starting their 2nd year as WMF grantee.

WikiCite 2025

For whoever uses Wikidata in their wiki activities related to library science or sources, I share also here a reminder that the WikiCite conferences series dedicated to Wikidata and sources/references is going to be rebooted this year by WMCH. It will take place at the end of August.

Most of the conference will be on-line. There are various slots available for the wider community, especially on Saturday, featuring both long and short talks (see Programme. if anyone amongst you have any proposal which overlaps with the theme of this Wikicon, please add it here. Unable to Access Wiley

[edit]

FYI: Just the other day I accessed an article from Wiley—however, today I went back to review that same article, and I got this message from Cloudflare when trying to access it via the TWL proxy:

Screenshot (imgur.com)

This occurs not only when I attempt to access an article directly at its dedicated URL, but also when I manually reload with the proxy, and it also occurs when I go to TWL homepage and click "Access Collection" under the "Wiley" card in the grid of collections.

There is no mention of a "Service issue" on the Wiley collection card, so I thought I would report it here.

Searching Jstor

How can I get to this link within the Wikipedia Library? If I just visit the link (i.e., outside the wikipedia library), I get 'We're sorry. You don't appear to have permission to access the item', if I try from within, it gives the 'No results found'. How do I get to it, please? - MPF (talk) 10:07, 2 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@MPF: It's in TWL here (it's a one-page pdf document). I couldn't find it using JSTOR's search box in TWL either, but I got access to it using javascript described in The Wikipedia Library/Newsletter/March-April_2023#Access tips and tricks. —Bruce1eetalk 13:54, 2 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

International Bibliography of Art (IBA), via ProQuest (or Getty?)

[edit]

This is a shot in the dark, but wondering if there would ever be a world in which the library would want or could get access to the index International Bibliography of Art (IBA), the successor of the Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA). IBA is run and owned by ProQuest, which the library already has a significant partnership with. The Getty Research Institute in California currently allows free access to the BHA and it's been one of the best resources for me when looking for sources for biography articles on visual artists and over visual arts coverage - a category of article that's really languished in the past on Wikipedia. Having access to the IBA would be just as useful. Asking here as opposed to suggesting because I'm not sure if this is even appropriate as it's an index and not a database of actual content. Thanks for any insight! 19h00s (talk) 13:37, 2 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Requirement ratio

[edit]

Why is the requirement ratio 6 months to 500 edits to 10 edits per month.

also how many days is the 6 months requirement as it can be anywhere between 181 and 184 days. 23.162.200.217 08:04, 5 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

The requirement numbers are somewhat arbitrary - they were set a long time ago and we weren't looking at a lot of data at the time. As for the 6 months requirement, the specific value is 182 days. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:24, 5 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Also it is very easy to farm the edit count requirement. Just create a blank userpage on every wmf wiki. There are more than 500 wmf wikis so you will reach it. 23.162.200.217 10:49, 6 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Edinburgh university press - is the access scope limited?

[edit]

I just tried to access a newly published article, via Wikipedia Library, in an EUP journal, namely Philosophy, Politics and Critique. Yet I still have "no access" to the article https://www-euppublishing-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.3366/ppc.2025.0075

If EUP is not giving access to ALL its content, perhaps this could be described somewhere. I was unaware that deals between publishers and Wikipedia Library could be partial (and not complete). Or am I just experiencing some kind of odd error? Metacladistics (talk) 13:49, 6 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Metacladistics: It can often take a little while before newly published material becomes available via TWL. If you browse the UEP journals in TWL, you'll see that Philosophy, Politics and Critique has three issues per year: April, July and October. The article you want was published on 6 August 2025. —Bruce1eetalk 06:17, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the explanation. I am a highly infrequent user of TWL. How long do I need to wait do you think? Days, weeks, or months? Metacladistics (talk) 09:37, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
That article will probably appear in the October 2025 issue, so I would guess October or November this year. —Bruce1eetalk 09:54, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

I use Cambridge University Press quite a lot. I have accessed Cosmological Physics many times while working on articles like Chronology of the universe. Today it gives me the pay options.

For several weeks across two different machines it has been putting up "This website uses cookies" on every page no matter what option I select.

@Johnjbarton @Biologo-in-erba @Cynwolfe This issues is now resolved and Cambridge resources are available again. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:29, 6 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. The site is behaving oddly, though. No matter how many times I tell it to accept all cookies, the cookies notice won't go away. It disappears for a few seconds, then reappears. When it reappears, the page reloads and takes me back to the top of the article, which is highly annoying. If I leave the notice alone and don't touch it again, I can scroll through, but then a good chunk of the page is obscured by it. This distraction can be avoided by downloading the PDF, which I usually do only after I've skimmed through to determine that I'll want to consult the article repeatedly over time. However, now there's a "trick" to downloading: if you click or close the cookies notice when it inevitably reappears in the course of your request to download, the downloading stops and the entire page refreshes. So you have to allow the cookies notice to resurrect and then refrain from touching it in order for the PDF request to go through. Cynwolfe (talk) 04:39, 7 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Resuming JSTOR/EBSCO tab

I have logged in via Wikipedia library and found an article on JSTOR. When I go back to it later (it could be a couple of days) EBSCO wants me to sign in via my institution. I can sign in again via Wikipedia, but I get the library page rather than the article I was reading. I saved the URL for the article but I don’t know how to use it to get back to my original search. Help, please.

I have several others. I was doing an extensive search and opening documents of interest in another tab as I went. Apparently, that's fine for short periods but eventually I was invited to "find my institution" ans log in, something which I can only do via the Wikipedia library. If there is no way to do the login for each tab, perhaps there is a way to enter a document code via the W lib. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 01:19, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Try using the permalink option on the right side of the record page? Nikkimaria (talk) 03:01, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the suggestion. I see the Permalink icon when I follow the link you provided. How do I create such a link from the URL of blocked pages?
If I do a new search, there is no Permalink option. There is also no permalink option when I display a single item from the search list. However, there is a save icon; I am told my saves will be permanent if I log in even though I am already logged in through the Wikipedia library. If it doesn't recognise my login I don't know how long the saves last.
If I try to use any of the tabs I already have open, I just get a request to "find your institution". Is there some way to tell it my institution is the Wikipedia library? Perhaps that gets me back to my question of how to create a link when I have a URL from a page which is currently blocked.
I will not get into this predicament in future, but I would like to salvage a couple of hours of existing work.
Humphrey Tribble (talk) 03:45, 21 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don't think there is a way to retroactively construct a permalink, unfortunately - you'd need to do it when you're first searching. For the login, you can create an individual account in EBSCO which is what it's referencing. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:33, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

This is a known issue that we've unfortunately been unable to resolve: T345104. We probably should have removed Archives as an available collection, actually. Let me follow up on that. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:11, 25 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reply, I had checked the talk archives and found no prior discussion. Too bad there were no more updates about the voucher codes solution mentioned in T345104. I hope that the removal of the service can be avoided. Despite all the difficulties, failures and frustration, I still often use the archive through snippets on the search page, partially loading and (more rarely) fully loading pages (recent examples [5], [6], [7], [8], [9]). For someone mostly editing Italy-related topics in WP the archive is by far the most useful and rich resource in the Wikipedia Library. Cavarrone (talk) 14:55, 25 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

deGruyter problems

[edit]

Hi, today I tried to access some books on deGruyter from Firefox, but the page opened to a white screen with the message "HTTP header value exceeds the configured limit of 8192 characters". This error didn't appear on Safari.

Edited to add: even on Safari, many books that were available last week are listed as unlicensed. Biologo-in-erba (talk) 11:54, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Biologo-in-erba This error is usually due to an issue with your cookies - please try deleting cookies for oclc.org and trying again. Unfortunately our access to De Gruyter just expired, so it won't be available at the moment anyway (T405707), but that's a separate issue to the one you're facing. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:22, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Samwalton9 (WMF) Thank you! Biologo-in-erba (talk) 13:35, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Blocked from Wikipedia Library

[edit]

Hi everyone, I'm blocked from Wikipedia Library, since the edit counter is counting my recent edits as "negative edits" and my edit count is therefore below zero. Is someone experiencing the same issue? Is someone able to solve it? Friniate (talk) 11:11, 28 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

I can log in to the Wikipedia Library. Are you having any other problems, e.g., that make you think you should restart your web browser or w:en:Wikipedia:Bypass your cache? WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:04, 28 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
No, not at all, I've also tried to access the wikipedia library in incognito mode and even so I'm experiencing the same problem: wikipedia reads my edits as if they were negative edits, therefore I've minus ten thousand recent edits, below zero. Friniate (talk) 17:07, 28 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
This is probably phab:T404708, which should resolve itself in a couple of days. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:30, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have the same issue perhaps because I changed my username a few months ago. My recent edits is in the range of negative 1600s. However, I do have +5 edits in the last month, and it still does not allow me access. Astra Travasso (talk) 08:41, 1 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

de Gruyter completely unlicensed

[edit]

De Gruyter reports for everything: unlicensed. I tested access with several browsers, unfortunately without success. I also cleared the browser cache several times, without effect.

Yes, just to register it another source they have which I use a lot is the online version of the de:Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde, now the en:Germanische Altertumskunde Online .--Andrew Lancaster (talk) 13:08, 4 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

This source is also unlicensed. So what a difference this make?--Nous (talk) 17:20, 4 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

That is the message we are seeing right? I think that it means our subscription is not working for these materials. Free/open materials are still available.--Andrew Lancaster (talk) 21:10, 4 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
The least is free material. Only a few open access books and paratexts (en:Book_design#Front_matter) are free. Most of the material is not licensed, regardless of whether it is part of a book/magazine or a database.

Not able to access degruyterbrill dictionary content

[edit]

I am trying to access the content of GD – Wörterbuch Altgriechisch-Deutsch Online, which I was able to access until some weeks ago, but now I see the below when I click on the search results:

Unlicensed Published by De Gruyter 2023 (Print 2023) Not sure if you should have access? Please log in using an institutional account to see if you have access to view or download this content.

I confirm that I can access other content by degruyterbrill. Spiros71 (talk) 08:48, 8 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I'm here for quite the same reason. Few minutes ago, I was searching for a source to verify the notability of an artist, I usually use the De Gruyer Brill links via THe Wikipedia Library for this, but today I cannot access pages as I used to, even logged in as wikipedian I can't have access to pages [10] [11] ("Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon - Internationale Künstlerdatenbank - Online" and "Italian Biographical Archive"). The banner shows:

Not sure if you should have access? Please log in using an institutional account to see if you have access to view or download this content.

A lock and the texte Unlicensed are also shown.
I am astonished. Una tantum (talk) 09:04, 8 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Samwalton9 (WMF), if the contract expired, maybe we should remove/hide https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/105/ from https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/my_library/? That would help editors understand that it's "gone" instead of "broken". WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:01, 8 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I've added a note there - it's not gone-gone, we're just awaiting renewal. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 07:57, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Edit: Sorry, I didn't see this thread, so let me add my comment to this one. Is the contract with De Gruyter really expired? That would be awful!: Hi, the AKL, through The Wikipedia Library's De Gruyter subscription, was and is a very important and useful resource for my WP work and, I assume, everyone working about artists in German in general. Today I wasn't able to access the AKL anymore. Neither the scanned book version, nor the online version can be accessed be me - did anthing change about the cooperation with De Gruyter, or is it just me?
When going to degruyter.com/akl, the page says "Wikipedia does not have access to this resource". When looking for the book version on the De Gruyter Brill website through the WP Library link, it shows me all books with the comment "Nur in gedruckter Form" ('only in printed version').
Since the merger of De Gruyter and Brill, their homepage changed a lot. When searching for any broad term, e.g., "Maria", and turning on the filter "Lizenziert" ('licenced') - which I would understand to be all books that the WPL users have access to - 0 books show up. Under "Alle zugänglichen Inhalte" I get shown only Open Access books - but those are accessible for everyone, even without WP Library.
Thanks for looking into it! Fuchs B (talk) 13:48, 14 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Fuchs B, yes, it seems the contract expired in September. The question is whether we will get a new contract. I'm sure the WMF shouldn't publicly say anything about contract negotiations. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:38, 14 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for letting me know! I hope WMF can make it happen... Fuchs B (talk) 21:39, 14 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

We're sorry, your institution doesn't have access to this article through ProQuest.
You may have access to this article elsewhere through your library or institution, or try exploring related items you do have access to.

It would be a big loss if we can't get access to old newspaper articles! -- Kautilya3 (talk) 15:54, 1 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'm having the same issue, not only are the historical newspapers not available anymore, the magazines, journals and other documents we used to have access to, are no longer available as well. The only database I get now is "Education Research Index" - the education research database produced by the U.S. Department of Education.Isaidnoway (talk) 21:53, 1 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Corriere della Sera

I should have this newspaper in my library, but I'm not able to access to his archive? Any solution how to do? Thanks Bramfab (talk) 15:14, 5 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello, @Bramfab I am just a passing by, and my hunch tells me the archive is managed by Fondazione Corriere della Sera, no?
A wilder idea is:
  1. Have you tried searching for the article title +Corriere della Sera on Internet Archive? (wikidata Q102319593).

Wikipedia Library user survey launching soon

Our current tentative launch date is this Friday, 12th December, but it's possible this could shift to next week. Please let me know if you have any questions. To whom it may concern,

Please look into how we can get access to one of these sources:

Available collections?

[edit]

The page https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/my_library/ puzzles me. The main area is clear: a button for each publisher. But across the top is

  • Favorites (18) My Collections (82) Available Collections (32)

What does that mean? How can I find out if a particular publisher participates? I thought that https://royalsocietypublishing.org/ did but maybe not. Johnjbarton (talk) 03:23, 12 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

"Favorites" is ones that you 'star' yourself. 'My Collections' is usable by you right now. 'Available' items require some sort of application process.
If you scroll down, you'll find searching/filtering options in the sidebar. Searching for the word 'royal', it looks like https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/20/ is the one you are looking for. It requires an application. Most applications are approved, though there can be a waitlist for very popular ones. WhatamIdoing (talk) 08:53, 12 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
