Adding sources
[edit]Hi. I have a question. Is a phrase of an article doesn't have a source and doesn't have the "Citation needed" template, if I decide to add a source, would I earn one point? Or only if the phrase has that template prior to me adding a source? Tuga1143 (talk) 23:44, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, @Tuga1143:! Answering your question: yes, you would earn 1 point if you decide to add a reliable source to the article connected with Ukrainian culture even without "Citation needed" template.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 08:42, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- @ValentynNefedov (WMUA)Thank you very much! Tuga1143 (talk) 09:49, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
What does "new sources" mean?
[edit]The scoring about sources is "+1 point for each new source you add to an existing Wikipedia article in any language". So, if I translate an article from other wikipedia and I use the same sources, can I add one point each source? Thanks, --KajenCAT (talk) 21:08, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @KajenCAT:! Simply saying, if you create article (writing your on your own or translating), you should not add point for every source. It works if you add source to an existing Wikipedia article. It is made to encourage participants to impove existing articles.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 11:27, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Species
[edit]Do articles about species or geographical features count? John Smith (W1F0X) (talk) 18:43, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @John Smith (W1F0X):! Scope of contest is Ukrainian culture and people, so I would say that species can be ruled out. However, some geographical features like bits of architecture, that are connected to Ukrainian culture, can be part of contest.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 11:36, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
--AnToni(T) 11:14, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- It's Bosnische Wikipedia, and please use English. --185.48.172.173 19:14, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, @AnToni:! From my little understanding of German, I did not got the first question, however I can answer the second one. Participants are responsible for calculation of their points. As I see here, you have done it more or less correctly.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 11:44, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
New articles
[edit]So, there are no points for creating new articles, only for translating existing articles? StAnselm (talk) 04:50, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @StAnselm:! Points are issued for new articles, however if you translate one, you get additional 2 points.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 10:15, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- OK, sure. StAnselm (talk) 14:21, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Statement from organizatonal team
[edit]Due to several messages concerning CentralNotice banner and recent events of the invasion of Ukraine, I on behalf of organizational team would like to issue the statement.
- The contest was organized as the second edition of Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2021, contest was planned way before escalation of situation.
- The start of CentralNotice campaign was taken in relation of the start of contest on February 17, to engage the community during middle period of contest. The fact that it appeared to be the start of active invasion is cruel coincidence.
- All communities were notified of CentralNotice banner. If community consensus is to remove this banner, please write here
- This campaign is organized in cooperation with Ministry of Foreign Affairs but it has no influence on the content of any articles, all pages must be within local guidelines.
- We sincerely thank everyone, who expressed words of support in the times of one of the darkest periods of our history.
- I, personally, will continue supporting this contest till the end.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 15:02, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

[edit]- Ahh ok, because I was about to say what is going on.--Thinker78 (talk) 16:56, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thinking of you all and sharing this event. EponineBunnyKickQueen (talk) 21:10, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- I see no reason to remove the banner. Attracting editors to a wide range of Ukrainian culture topics in Wikipedia is perfectly valid. It's Putin's bad luck to have launched a military invasion just at the time when Wikipedia attention is being paid to Ukrainian culture. Boud (talk) 22:34, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

- Wow! That's is a totally weird coincidence. I've been using wiki to look up the history of Ukraine and the conflict with Russia which has been a huge help in understanding the people. It's only right that I attempt to do what I can add to the knowledge base. --76.17.121.214 21:10, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Dear organizatonal team
[edit]In view of the current events and internet outages in Ukraine, I hope that all organizers, their families and the Ukrainian people are well and that this escalation ends immediately, I will continue to participate in the contest. May all fare well, be safe and take care.--Amr F.Nagy (talk) 21:34, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Timing
[edit]Goddamn, the timing of this thing is f'ing insane! 204.141.212.238 22:32, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- Agreed. I was a little dumbfounded when I saw the banner. It is definitely a good time to teach about Ukrainian culture. Wishing the best to all those who participate. Goddale120 (talk) 23:24, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- It was already planned months ago to start in February. Now we see (imo) the strongest diplomacy since WW2. Romaine (talk) 08:43, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
This shouldn't be here
[edit]It is unacceptable that Wikipedia be taking the side of one of the belligerents in a war. This "writing challenge" is being done in cooperation with the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (as stated in the article). Wikipedia is not a place for patriotism. It should remain neutral. -- Communpedia Tribal (talk) 23:35, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

- -- Ryebreadforscale (talk) 02:03, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- This event started on the 17th. Though it was likely organized in solidarity with Ukraine, it predates the conflict. The "patriotism" charge is thus not as egregious as it appears. I do think that, given the unfortunate circumstances, it may be inappropriate to promote this Cultural Diplomacy Month through wiki banners. Doing that may give a wrong impression to editors. - Please see #Statement from organizatonal team. Firestar464 (talk) 10:52, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- I would like to add further, Wikipedia is place of knowledge and such non-sense activity is not suitalble. It is a platform of knowledge and must remain. Ukraine is nothing more than occupied Russia. MindAndMemory (talk) 20:16, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Report for abuse
[edit]Greetings to the organizing team.
In trwiki, I noticed that an article was started with the wrong name. After moving the article to its correct name, I saw Kullanılan kaynaklar sector at the bottom of the article. As a participant of the relevant event, I wanted to take a look at the other articles that Praça de Maio started when I saw that Praça de Maio started dozens of articles and reached a huge score. When I saw that most of the articles of one or two sentences reached 20 thousand bytes, I decided to get involved and forward this issue to the relevant competition committee. Regarding a point that caught my attention regarding these articles opened within the scope of the contest organized by the Ukrainian Wikipedia, I retracted or deleted the following changes because they were non-constructive changes, unsourced informations, could not be verified, were added for the purpose of manipulating a contest, not for the purpose of creating an encyclopedia. I sent him this this inappropriate situation. You can compare before and after situations there and here. Due to my responsibility, I have to report this inappropriate situation to you.
By the way, while comparing the Praça de Maio's contributions, I noticed Portuguese Wikipedia user Tuga1143 had the same content profile. So, I had to report that user, too.
I invite the committee to review the status of both users in the competition.-Thecatcherintherye (talk) 20:51, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Thecatcherintherye, I can remove such articles from my list if you want or if the organizing team wants... I don't care if I translate from English or any other language. When the sources are online, I verify them, but when they are books, I trust the user who did it... I'm just here to translate content from other languages and promote this culture in my home wiki. What do you think/want me to do? Tuga1143 (talk) 12:57, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Thecatcherintherye:, thanks for information. All articles must be created due to local guidelines and rules. If participants are consistently breaking rules, they could be disqualified. I will check all articles later--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 14:36, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Thecatcherintherye and @ValentynNefedov (WMUA): I've counted my article list so far, and from the 71 articles I have translated at this moment, 17 were from Turkish with the problems that Thecatcherintherye reported. I don't see any problems with them in my wiki because I've defined the amount of books as "Further reading". If you guys want, I can remove these 17 articles from my list... I have already participated last year in this contest, and I always give my best according to the rules of the contest and of the Portuguese Wikipedia. So... just tell me what I should do and I'll do it :-)
- Kind regards, Tuga1143 (talk) 15:10, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Removal of Infobox (into a Template section)
[edit]It seems that because of moving Infobox under Templates the UCDMonth site has a broken link in place of Infobox for every language besides English, which is only fixed because @Daxipedia: updated the link. Or did @Pols12: this on purpose and the same should be done for all the translated languages? Maybe you know, @ValentynNefedov (WMUA):? --Märt Põder (talk) 04:52, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Märt Põder:, I think to fix this, translation admin should mark new template version for traslation. @Ameisenigel:, could you help Template:Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2022/Infobox?--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 14:27, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Ameisenigel: also Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2022 needs to be marked--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 15:02, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
- My bad. Not the template but the page had to be marked for translation, what I have done. Sorry for my mistake. Usually, I ever check whether the page is transcluded before to move it; this time I didn’t have check, I don’t know why. Regards, -- Pols12 (talk) 15:39, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
People working on the same article at the same time
[edit]I just realized someone else finished and published an article I was also working on (from the suggested list). Can we please get a way to "reserve" articles, like it is done for Asian Month, so people don't start on articles others are already working on? There is currently no way to make sure people aren't working on the same article at the same time. It's very frustrating to spend hours on an article only to have someone else "get there" first. As more people join and more articles are created, this kind of thing is just going to happen more and more frequently.--Feuerrabe (talk) 16:09, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
- I am sorry that you experienced such a problem however we did not expect that our contest will be that popular. Some wikis allow to "premake" articles by putting template {{edited}} on the page.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 16:46, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
This article seems to have been edited recently, and in examining the link boxes on it, there appear to be some red-linked regions, where coverage of historically and culturally important heritage sites may be limited.
I sadly don't speak, read or write Ukrainian at all, but perhaps there are some active editors monitoring this page that do?
Expanding Wikipedia's documentation of cultural heritage which exists in a physical form, and could be under threat given events in the news, is a worthwhile activity that should be encouraged. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:13, 28 February 2022 (UTC)
Translation
[edit]Hi,
Should translations be done only with the en:Wikipedia:Content translation tool, so you will count them as translations? Personally, I don't like this tool and prefer translating directly, without any additional tool (such as the one Wikipedia offers). For example, lately, I translated en:Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle into Hebrew by myself (see he:מבצר קמניץ-פודולסקי).
Best, Bustan1498 (talk) 07:16, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @Bustan1498:! You can translate articles using whatever tool you might find helpful or not using any tool. The most important thing is that translation should be of good quality. P.S. I, personally, also do not like using Content translation tool during my volunteering .--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 17:45, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
(crosspost from Commons) Could Commons host the Zelenskyy /Ukraine war video files?
[edit]Every day of the war Zelenskyy is posting ~7 minute videos to Facebook giving daily updates.
Who is interested or who would support some kind of effort to contact the Ukrainian government to ask for Wikimedia compatible copyright licenses so that we could host these videos on Commons, and translate subtitles?

Project banner?
[edit]It would be good to have a banner to add to the article talk page: "This article was created or improved as part of Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2022"? PamD (talk) 16:43, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @PamD:! We do not have the intention to create such a banner because of several issues. Firstly, we encourage contesters to add hashtag #UCDMonth in edit summary and it functions as sort of replacement for banner. Secondly, as this is cross-wiki contest, people may be confused if some wikis have banner and others not.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 16:51, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- And in some Wikipedias such banners are not accepted. Romaine (talk) 08:44, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
About Ukraine in Volapük
[edit]Dear all, I know this isn't particularly related to the contest, but please allow me to share it anyway: Ukraine is featured rather prominently on the main page of the Volapük edition. Cheers, IJzeren Jan (talk) 17:54, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
Point calculation when adding image to Wikidata?
[edit]I transferred File:Aksenenko sergey.JPG from ru.wiki to Commons and then added the image manually to uk:Аксененко Сергій Іванович, and to the Wikidata item Sergeĭ Aksënenko (Q4059982) which in turn added the image to en:Sergey Ivanovich Aksenenko through the wonderfully nifty Infobox. But, how should I add and score this? Josve05a (talk) 22:49, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @Josve05a:! In this particular example, this photo looks like copyright violation to me. The firts signs of its existence on the internet can be tracked down to year 2007-2008. It was uploaded on ruwiki in 2009 without evidence of being in public domain. I would not grant this contribution any points until permission is provided.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 11:17, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
- Let’s say as an example for an image that would be ok. How would that be scored? Josve05a (talk) 12:55, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
- I would say that adding photo to wikidata and ukwiki would give you 1.5 point total.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 13:07, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
- Let’s say as an example for an image that would be ok. How would that be scored? Josve05a (talk) 12:55, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
Why limit the awarded articles?
[edit]I don't understand this limitation, I have been writing articles about important museums in Ukraine, which are obviously a cultural element, yet they are not in the lists. At least a recognition for participation in this contest is expected. Cheers.
- Hi, @Virum Mundi:! Just to be clear: any participation in this contest is highly regarded and would be recognised. The contest is not limited to suggested articles: you are free to choose any topics and articles that are connected to Ukrainian culture, however if you translate article from suggested list, you will get additional 10 points for each such article. Also, some museums are featured on this list. Hope everything is clear now.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 12:39, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, well, these museums aren't ;) But thanks, I understand now. Virum Mundi (talk) 14:07, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
Active meaning
[edit]Hello ValentynNefedov (WMUA) ! I have a doubt. What is meant by "top 30 most active"? Does "Active" means "contribution of most articles" or "contribution of most points" or any other? Haoreima (talk) 06:57, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
- Another thing, what is meant by "adding a new image"? Does it mean a new upload or just adding a relevant image to the very article from the Wikimedia Commons or from the very wiki's former uploads? Haoreima (talk) 06:59, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @Haoreima:! Regarding prizes: Original idea was that at least top 30 most active editors, who gained the most points would get prizes. However, the situation in country changed so much that we are not sure whether shipping of prizes will be possible at all. I will inform contesters about prizes after the end of competition. Answering your second question: adding a new image means placing the new image in Wikipedia article (of course relevant image). It could be your own photo or something that you can find in Commons.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 14:55, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
Ucraina e Rutenia su la.wikisorce
[edit]Scusate se scrivo in italiano. E' gradito se su la.wikisource, ovviamente fuori concorso, vengono raccolti i testi dei secoli scorsi in latino relativi specialmente all' Unione di Brest e all' arcidiocesi di Leopoli di rito greco?

Score pages
[edit]Hello, if we could not calculate the points correctly or make a mistake, we will not receive a certificate?
- Hi, @Naderitat:! Do not worry, I can guarantee that every participant who made good-faith edits will receive online certificate. Even if some mistake with calculation happpens, I will make correction.--ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 19:51, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
Page Eligibility Question
[edit]Hi, I made a dozen history pages about what happened in Ukraine in particular years. Since history and culture are so inextricably connected, are these eligible for the contest? They probably should be because the history of Ukraine is undeniably a part of Ukrainian culture and heritage. Thank you! Dantheanimator (talk) 02:23, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @Dantheanimator! I see that you made contribution in the contest with pages about years in Ukraine. I cannot say that it is eligible enough to be part of culture articles in my opinion but as an exeption and bearing in mind that there are not many of such articles, I will allow them to be eligible. ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 21:50, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you Valentyn Nefedov, I really appreciate it! Hope you are staying safe during these difficult times. With warmth, Dantheanimator (talk) 23:44, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Results
[edit]When is it expected that the results will be published? W1F0X (talk) 18:00, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, Wikimedia Ukraine!
[edit]Thank you for holding this editathon. I learned a lot, and it has been inspiring to see so many people working together in so many languages. I hope you are all well. EponineBunnyKickQueen (talk) 03:43, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

About the online certificates and the results
[edit]According to the update from organizers, "(...) prizes for most active participants might change and/or get delayed". Does this also apply to the certificates? The results page still says "To be announced after the end of the contest", but the contest should have ended on the 17th, right? Have the certificates already been given and I don't know where to find them or they haven't sent them yet? If the certificates haven't been sent yet, when should we expect to get them? And, how are we going to receive and be able to see the certificates?
I understand that the current situation must be very difficult for the team, so I will wait as much as needed. I hope everyone is safe. --Joacom14 (talk) 15:43, 19 March 2022 (UTC)Joacom14
- Hi, @W1F0X and Joacom14:! Contest indeed has ended and I thank you for your participation. Before results can be published, I need to review content, added by contesters, so it may take some time. You will be contacted in regards to prizes and certificates later. ValentynNefedov (WMUA) (talk) 21:56, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the respond and for helping in this project! <3 Joacom14 (talk) 22:39, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
