Talk:Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2025
Add topicIncubator
[edit]Perhaps it's just a formality, but I'll ask it anyway: do articles in the Wikimedia Incubator count as well? I'm asking this, because technically these language editions do not have their own Wikipedia domain yet, even though they are ultimately intended to get one. IJzeren Jan (talk) 12:05, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for your question!
- Yes, sure, we encourage our participants to translate in as many languages as possible. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 16:13, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
- @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) Thank you!
- Now that I think of it, I have a few questions about the scoring system:
- One of the examples says: "If you add 3,900 bytes of content to an existing article, you get 6 points: 4 for the size and 2 for improvement." Since one receives 1 point for each 1000 bytes, shouldn't this be: 3 for the size and 2 for improvement?
- I would recommend you to be a bit more specific about what it means to "improve" an article. Theoretically, I could improve it by correcting a typo, or by updating the number of inhabitants of some village, or by adding a single sentence. But none of these would warrant 2 points, would they?
- Cheers, IJzeren Jan (talk) 14:46, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
- 1. You are right that 3,900 bytes would mathematically be 3.9 points based on the "1 point per 1,000 bytes" rule. However, when calculating points, we use standard rounding (mathematical rounding). That means 3.9 rounds up to 4. So in this case, 3,900 bytes earns 4 points for size.
- 2. That's a great point, thank you! We've actually already updated the page to clarify what qualifies as an "improvement." Hopefully, it's now clearer what kind of edits are considered substantial enough to earn the 2 points. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 20:22, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Complètement d'accord !@IJzeren Jan EmyRodayerautriceintello (talk) 16:13, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
Suggestions
[edit]Yesterday, I've taken a peek at the lists of suggested articles (and incidentally removed doublets). May I suggest a few additions? I don't know if I am at liberty to add them myself, especially since I plan to participate myself again this year, so let me at least ask:
- Crucial
- Volodymyr Vynnychenko (Q2494143) (not including him is a mortal sin of omission IMO!)
- Cossacks (Q47805)
- Music
- Levko Revutsky (Q596947)
- Kobzar (Q2330480))
- Bandura (Q262414)
- Literature
- Ivan Kotliarevskyi (Q455246)
- Sixtiers (Q4523373)
- Volodymyr Sosyura (Q2623762)
- Ivan Drach (Q2632284)
- Dmytro Pavlychko (Q691471)
- Maksym Rylsky (Q2638198)
- General
- Kievan Rus' (Q1108445)
- Ukrainian alphabet (Q1098595)
- Ukrainian Latin alphabet (Q2322215)
- Romanization of Ukrainian (Q2505327)
- Mykola Skrypnyk (Q2422261)
- Leonid Kravchuk (Q189732)
- Volodymyr Zelenskyy (Q3874799)
Furthermore, I'd like to make one additional remark. Smaller Wikipedias often have very little about Ukraine, and whatever they have is often very short. You'll probably agree that it would be strange to write an article about the Drama Theatre in Kharkiv if there isn't even an article about Kharkiv itself, or even about Ukraine. Wouldn't it be an idea to add at least Ukraine and a number of major cities (Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Zhytomyr etc.) to the list? IJzeren Jan (talk) 11:02, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your suggestions and for your interest in the campaign! We're still in the process of finalizing the list of suggested articles this week, so the current version is not yet complete — we're actively working on it.
- You're absolutely right that articles like "Ukraine" or major cities are important. However, many of the ones you mentioned already have a large number of translations and were covered well in previous years. That's why we’re currently focusing on adding articles that are still missing translations in many Wikipedias or are underdeveloped.
- That said, we have added most of your suggested articles to the list. Thank you again for your thoughtful input! OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 20:28, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- You're most welcome, it's a pleasure! IJzeren Jan (talk) 21:00, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
- Are articles written on Wikipedia (mainly Uzbek Wikipedia) also taken into account? What do you need to participate? Thanks. Nektiring0978 (talk) 09:05, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Nektiring0978 Every article written about Ukrainian culture counts. Don't forget to add your contribution to the list of participants OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 17:55, 14 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. (Nektiring0978 (talk) 18:01, 14 April 2025 (UTC)

Hello again! Is it OK if I suggest more languages for en:Deutsche Schule Kiew and en:Lycée Anne de Kiev ? (some were added last year, but it doesn't hurt to have more) WhisperToMe (talk) 18:18, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- @WhisperToMe Hello! Sure, feel free to translate the articles in any language you wish to. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 22:51, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
Scorring
[edit]Hello, I want to ask about scorring if I create new translation with 9,780 bytes how to calculate this scorring ? Is it that just only 10 points or 9 points ? Ariandi Lie Talk with me 03:06, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Ariandi Lie Hi, thanks for your question! When calculating points, we use standard rounding (mathematical rounding), so you will have 10 points in total. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 11:38, 22 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, what are the rules of this project for new users? How many articles should I create or request? Can I create a new article on the Uzbek Wikipedia? Thanks. (Vikingvik87 (talk) 14:06, 22 April 2025 (UTC))
- I have another question for you: I am also very interested in Information Technology and Geography, so I will write about that. Will points be added if the article is 2000 words or more? Thanks. (Vikingvik87 (talk) 14:09, 22 April 2025 (UTC))
- @Vikingvik87 Thanks for your questions! You are free to create as many articles as you like, in any language of your choice. Check the "Participants&Scoring" —> "New editors" information.
- We evaluate the articles based on their byte size, so it will be taken into account (but your example is totally fine). However, please note that we are specifically counting articles focused on cultural topics. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 20:19, 26 April 2025 (UTC)
FA and scoring
[edit]Hello, I'm working on an article and planning to promote it to Featured Article. When I list it in the scoring section, can I add the score dedicated Good article criteria? Or is it not allowed? OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA)? --► Sincerely: SolaVirum 15:57, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Solavirum Hello, thanks for your question! At this stage, please include this in your claim without adding a score. We will wait two more weeks after the contest ends to determine whether the nomination is successful. If your article receives the status, you will be awarded the corresponding points. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 20:26, 26 April 2025 (UTC)
Can Technologies from Notable Ukrainians be Included?
[edit]An example in that range of topics could be the the existing article of the Vought-Sikorsky VS-300 by Ukrainian Igor Sikorsky (also an existing article).Starlighsky
- Thanks for the idea! It sounds interesting, but it's not quite in line with the cultural focus of the topic. Creating the article is still encouraged, though this particular case won't be considered in the evaluation.--OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 16:02, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
Help
[edit]Can anyone pls fix my page Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2025/Participants/Somajyoti Somajyoti ✉ 15:51, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Somajyoti Hi! Could you please specify your request? What exactly needs to be fixed? OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 22:56, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
Donetsk
[edit]Would there be any interest in a brief article setting out a little on the link between the city of Donetsk and Glamorgan in South Wales? GeoffreyBH (talk) 13:27, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
- @GeoffreyBH Thank you for the idea! What you're suggesting sounds interesting, but it's not quite in line with the cultural focus of the topic. Creating the article is still encouraged, though this particular case won't be considered in the evaluation. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 16:01, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
- I don't remember doing anything about this - Sorry. GeoffreyBH (talk) 14:04, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
Commons
[edit]- Does "Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2025" have activities on Commons? Thanks, --Ooligan (talk) 18:46, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Ooligan No, this campaign is organised on the Meta-Wiki. You can find our visuals on Commons only. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 12:41, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
How do I obtain “permission to edit pages in the CNBanner namespace”?
[edit]I have been trying to create CNBanner:UCDM2025banner-text/cy, but when I try to publish my translation through Special:Translate, I get the message Publishing the translation failed: You do not have permission to edit pages in the CNBanner namespace. I posted my translation to MediaWiki talk:Centralnotice-template-UCDM2024banner#Welsh translation (the wrong year; it should've been to MediaWiki talk:Centralnotice-template-UCDM2025banner) a week ago, but got no response. May I be given to permission to edit pages in the CNBanner:
namespace, please? Failing that, could someone with that permission create CNBanner:UCDM2025banner-text/cy with the content Ymunwch â ni’n ysgrifennu erthyglau yn ystod Mis Diplomatiaeth Ddiwylliannol yr Wcráin
, please? 0DF (talk) 21:30, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- You have to be Meta:Autoconfirmed to edit pages in the CNBanner namespace. I did not know this rule existed until today. In any event I've created that page. * Pppery * it has begun 20:54, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- @* Pppery *: Aah, I see! Thank you for that. Unless I'm mistaken, this comment I'm writing will be the fifth edit I need to make in order to become autoconfirmed. 0DF (talk) 21:44, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
Where is a central place to learn about this and similar events?
[edit]Contests seems very poor and not updated. I occasionally learn about such events via banners but I'd like to be able to check what other events like this are ongoing or scheduled. Hanyangprofessor2 (talk) 05:37, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Hanyangprofessor2 Thank you for your comment. Our primary methods for promoting a campaign include CentralNotice banners, MassMessages, village pumps, social media, mailing lists, and similar channels. However, we appreciate the suggestion and will consider using pages like this as well. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 12:52, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) As someone who follows some but not all of these, I very much think we need a central place. Right now, all of this is chaotic. Sometimes I want to show my studnets activities they can take place in right now, or next month - and I have trouble finding any :( In practice, I randomly learn about an occasional contest from CN banners, but I am aware there are many others - but despite being a very active Wikipedian with 20 years of history, I don't know where to find such events. At least this time I got a few of my students involved in your context but it was a fluke. Hanyangprofessor2 (talk) 05:57, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Hanyangprofessor2 We appreciate your feedback and will try to do some adjustments for the next year! OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 13:48, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

Username doesn't appear
[edit]Yesterday i just added myself as participant in Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2025, but today after i check it again my username is gone. I tried to edit it again in the List of Participant and i found my username is still in there but doesn't appear. Do you know how to fix it? OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) Volstand (talk) 10:27, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Volstand Thanks for your question! As I see, your username is clearly shown on the participants page together with your contribution claim. Is it still not appearing for you? OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 12:47, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for answering my question @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA), it turns out my username just doesn't appear in another version of Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2025 beside the english one. The problem is solved for me :D, Thanks! Volstand (talk) 13:44, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
Is this cultural month being applied to each country?
[edit]I say this because it seems like more pro-Ukrainian propaganda. Which is strange on Wikipedia, given that it should be impartial and seeking free knowledge. Disclaimer: Yes, they were invaded unjustifiably, due to Russian ambition. And they are attacked many times with false propaganda.
I say this because I am concerned that Wikipedia, which seeks to be impartial and objective, bows to the world, ideologies, etc. That is, it becomes partial and disguises the truth. But, if this is something normal, and it goes by country, then an apology. Pilokyoma (talk) 16:14, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
- The point of this is to expand articles on Ukrainian culture. This was organized by Wikimedia Ukraine as well as some Ukrainian institutions. I'm not sure what the process of establishing such a contest is, but you can see a list here, which confirms that there have been similar contests on other countries and regions. Either way, this contest does not have the introduction of bias and subjectivity to Wikipedia on its agenda - general rules still apply to all articles. Its only goal is to increase the coverage of Ukrainian culture on Wikipedia, and there is nothing wrong about this. Propaganda is defined as "Agitation, publicity, public communication aimed at influencing an audience and furthering an agenda" - however articles on a certain general topic do not achieve any of this. Let's image there was a different contest on, say, physics. Would you say that that contest would present some kind of pro-physics "bias" to the entire website? I don't think that makes sense; at the end of the day, all that this accomplishes is the expansion of information on a specific topic. Shwabb1 (talk) 15:04, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- In addition, let me just note that the organizers have clearly done their very best to avoid making this political. Just take a look at the lists of suggested articles, and you'll see that there's practically nothing political to be found there. It's all about arts and other cultural expressions, really. And for what it is worth, I think it's great that the Ukrainian government sponsors a campaign that's aimed at improving Wikipedia. I wish more governments would do that. IJzeren Jan (talk) 16:41, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- Pilokyoma this is a contest organized by Wikimedia Ukraine --► Sincerely: SolaVirum 08:06, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

- @Pilokyoma There are contests about other parts of the world, and other topics, but it is hard to find out about them. Even in the context of Ukraine - where can we learn about all wiki contests related to Ukraine, past, present and future? I don't know :( Hanyangprofessor2 (talk) 05:58, 19 May 2025 (UTC)
Conclusion
[edit]Thanks to the Wikimedia Ukraine for an another exciting contest. To my knowledge, I got third place. I was 4th the last time I took a part. I'm glad that I could contribute to this contest. Good luck to everyone next year! --► Sincerely: SolaVirum 15:06, 18 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Solavirum Thanks for your comment and contribution this year! Now we are in the process of evaluating all the contributions and the final rank with winners will be published at the end of this month. So, please, expect, that the final places can differ. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 13:53, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- And you, @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) and others, thank you once again for organizing this! As far as I am concerned, this project is not about winning or losing at all, but simply about adding good material about a great country. I have done my very best to create some decent stuff – partly by translating, but mostly by doing research, because writing an article yourself is so much more fun than just translating somebody else's! Anyway, since this is slowly becoming a tradition, let's hope for a new round next year! Cheers, IJzeren Jan (talk) 22:37, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- IJzeren Jan in any case, competing is fun :) --► Sincerely: SolaVirum 20:24, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
- @IJzeren Jan Sure! The main aim is to promote and increase Ukrainian's culture on Wikipedia. But the points and ranking make this competition more interractive and fun:) And thank you so much for your contribution and high interest in the topic, looking forward for the results and the next year as well! - Hello OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk),
- Greetings!
- I have a quick question about participant points counting. If the points of the participants were counted less by mistake, while they were actually higher, would you consider the higher points or the lower ones?
- Thank you!
- Stay happy and stay safe 🙂. Mohammad Murtaza Zaidi (talk) 14:36, 25 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Mohammad Murtaza Zaidi Thanks for your question and contribution! The correct number of points will be verified. If you claimed fewer points than you actually earned, we will adjust the total accordingly after our review. The final list will be published soon on the results page.
