Talk:Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026
Add topicFollow-up: username still not appearing on the main List of Participants
[edit]- Hello, dear organising team.
- I am writing again regarding my participation in Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026.
- Following your advice, I tried to add my username to the main List of Participants once again. However, after doing so and waiting for the page to update, my username still does not appear on the main participants list.
- My contribution claim page still exists here:
- Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026/Participants/შალვა მინდაძე 11
- This page contains my submitted articles and the points I have claimed for them. I am concerned that, because of this technical issue with the main participants list, my contribution might not be included in the final evaluation.
- Could you please confirm once again that I will not be removed from the contest because of this issue, and that my contribution claim page and the articles listed there will still be reviewed and counted during the final evaluation?
- I would be very grateful for your confirmation, because I have worked a lot on this campaign and I do not want my contribution to be lost due to a technical problem with the participants list.
- Thank you very much for your help and for organising this contest.
My username disappeared from the main List of Participants
[edit]- Hello, dear organising team.
- I would like to clarify one point regarding my participation in Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026.
- My contribution claim page exists and contains my submitted articles:
- Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026/Participants/შალვა მინდაძე 11
- On this page, I have listed 30 articles created or translated into Georgian, with a total of 1945 points.
- However, my username seems to have disappeared from the main List of Participants. I noticed that my contribution page was already mentioned in this discussion among the pages whose names disappeared from the list.
- Could you please confirm that my contribution claim page and the articles listed there will be reviewed and counted during the final evaluation?
- Thank you very much for your work and for organising this contest.
Translated articles

Incorrect Wikidata for holubtsi
[edit]Hey, just wanted to point out that the Wikidata item for holubtsi is incorrect (Q4142591 is a village of that name). The more fitting item would be Q6499669 (cabbage roll) or, arguably, the broader Q13434162 (as vine leaf rolls are also regionally called holubtsi). Shwabb1 (talk) 21:10, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

Question About Wikidata Part
[edit]Hey, sorry for inconvinience. Got a question about Wikidata pointing system. Is "Creating a new Wikidata item" means one which does not exist or adding one from a language which didnt added before? And also what exactly does "improved" means? Is it like i add another language from suggested articles and get 5 points? Lastly, what is "wikitext"? These infoboxes and photos etc. we add into articles are wikitexts or is it something about wikidata? Thanks for the reply. Vikipedist Allied Mastercomputer (talk) 08:46, 2 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Vikipedist Allied Mastercomputer hello, and thanks for your interest! Creating a new Wikidata item means creating a completely new item that does not already exist in Wikidata. Adding a label, description, or sitelink (for example, a new language Wikipedia article) to an existing item does not count as creating a new item.
- “Improved” means making meaningful enhancements to an existing Wikidata item. For example, adding new statements (with sources if possible), identifiers, or other relevant data. Simply adding another language is usually not considered a substantial improvement on its own.
- “Wikitext” refers to the markup language used to write Wikipedia articles (including infoboxes, templates, links, and formatting). It is related to Wikipedia editing, not Wikidata. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 20:58, 2 April 2026 (UTC)
- Appreciated, and is there a leaderboards system for rewarding or will the commitee will decide who will get and who wont? Vikipedist Allied Mastercomputer (talk) 15:06, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Vikipedist Allied Mastercomputer the leaderboard will be formed after the competition ends, and based on this ranking we will determine the winners of the campaign. It will be published in the "Results" section. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 21:20, 3 April 2026 (UTC)

What counts as an existing article?
[edit]I've started working on an article that's currently in my userspace (User:Shwabb1/Monuments of national significance in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea) prior to the start of this event. It is within the scope of Ukrainian culture, so would I be able to gain points at UCDM for expanding it further? Its location in my userspace could imply restricted editing from other users before I move it to mainspace, so if that's a problem, would anything change if I move it to draftspace instead? Thank you in advance for the response. Shwabb1 (talk) 19:11, 2 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Shwabb1 Yes, you can earn points for expanding the article during the contest, even if it was started before the event. BUT, only the contributions made within the contest period will be counted.
- Working in userspace is not a problem. However, please note that points for article creation or substantial improvements will only count once the article is published in mainspace. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 20:55, 2 April 2026 (UTC)
- OK, thank you for the clarification. Shwabb1 (talk) 22:20, 2 April 2026 (UTC)

Commons?
[edit]Did I miss something or why is there no way to help with the 1,000's of Ukraine-related files on the Wikimedia Commons? Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 19:47, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Ooligan hello! Could you please clarify your question? OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 21:21, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
- @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA)- To clarify, this page Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026/Participants lists only Wikipedia and Wikidata.
- Why is Wikimedia Commons not listed as a way to help Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy? -- Ooligan (talk) 03:16, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Ooligan This campaign is originally a writing challenge, not a photocontest. So during the five years it was dedicated to Wikipedia only, and this year we decided to expand it to Wikidata.
- However, you can add the related images from Wikimedia Commons to the articles while translating it. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 11:47, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
- @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA), Thanks for your edit sugestion.
- I suggest next year that you will "expand it" to include Wikimedia Commons. As you know, Commons is much more than photographs- it is books, documents, maps, works of art, historical objects, buildings and monuments and much more. All various forms of Ukrainian "culture." Best regards, -- Ooligan (talk) 04:17, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
- @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) Can you please comment on my suggestion about including Commons next year? Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 15:39, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Ooligan I cannot surely say about the changes for the next year at this moment. We will consider this, but there is a low percentage that Commons will be included. Thank you! OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 12:36, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
- @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) Please, share a few reasons why "there is a low percentage that Commons will be included?" I want to better understand why Wikimedia Commons would not be useful for advancing "Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy." -- Ooligan (talk) 19:32, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
- You can add image as statement to Ukrainian Wikidata entries. This helps with the discovery and reuse of Ukrainian images in many Wikipedia language pages which automatically uses the image in Wikidata statement as the default image in infoboxes. OhanaUnitedTalk page 21:39, 29 April 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you @OhanaUnited. I know about that and I do appreciate you making that constructive suggestion. After 2 days, I still look forward to @OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA)'s response. Best regards, -- Ooligan (talk) 23:47, 29 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Ooligan Once again, the main reason Commons is not currently included is that this campaign was originally designed as a writing-focused initiative centered on article creation and improvement. Expanding it to Commons would require separate evaluation criteria, scoring systems, and moderation processes adapted specifically for media contributions. This does not mean Commons contributions are less valuable — only that they involve a different type of campaign structure. Commons contributions are also often more difficult to assess consistently in a contest format, since uploads can vary greatly in scope and impact.
- We appreciate the suggestion and may consider it in the future as the campaign evolves. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 14:05, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

Great contest, confusing instructions
[edit]I think this contest is an excellent idea.
But I'm confused by how to document contributions, so I have some questions:
(1) Should it be one page per article, listing all of your contributions to that article? Or should all of your contributions for multiple articles be on a single page? (2) What do all the codes mean? (I realize there was a use example at the start, but it did not illuminate anything.)
Thank you for sponsoring the contest! EditGirl99 (talk) 18:48, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- @EditGirl99 hello, and thanks for your interest and questions!
- 1) You should use one page to list all your contributions during the contest, not a separate page for each article. On that page, you can organize your work by article (for example, with sections or bullet points).
- 2) The “codes” refer to the formatting used in the tracking table (usually wikitext), and they are used to structure your contributions. If you follow the provided example, you can simply copy the format and replace it with your own contributions.
- For more details on how to note your contribution, please see on our video guide (specifically 05:45—09:20). I hope it's helpful! OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 23:38, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

Article lists: how soon translations saved in wikidata are updated?
[edit]Article lists of the Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026 include suggested article names (themes) typically at least in Ukrainian and often also English. One of my tasks this year is to translate or add standardized Romanization of Ukrainian names (in my case in Finnish) for these articles. And when translation is stored in Wikidata, I should see the (suggested) article names in Finnish when I open the relevant article lists. This also helps article creation with correct names. But tonight I noticed there is a delay of at least several hours. I wonder, does it take several days, or are the article lists updated sooner?
PS. Have you considered of adding e.g. fi:Ukrainica (Україніка) as one theme, here I specifically mean the electrical library of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine? Perhaps this could be something you consider next year? Because thorough it, those of us who are curious, could access books which could help with many articles during this cultural diplomacy month. I mean, one can find books & solid sources like Архітектура України : від античності до нашого часу : велика ілюстр. енцикл (2010; link (pdf)). Cheers, --Paju (talk) 05:27, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
- It seems that it took just few hours before the translated topics of articles listed as part of the Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026 were visible. I was just not patient enough. - Thank you for your good work! No additional answer is needed. --Paju (talk) 13:28, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

Questions and concerns
[edit]1. This contest is organized together with two Ukrainian government institutions. (Ukrainian Institute & The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine). Do these institutions have any control over the contest and who gets prizes? 2. It seems strange that this event is promoted via a banner, especially on articles unrelated to Ukraine. This is my first time seeing such a thing. Why do other events not get this privilege? Grassoc Oremaker (talk) 05:03, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
- It's not the first time, there were, I think, five other such events in the past years for every year, at least the second one (2022) also promoted via a banner.
- Answer to 2.:
- Because this is a tool perceived as useful for a pro-Ukrainian cultural (and emotional) promotion in the Anglo-Sphere (and globally) by interested actors, serving pro-Ukrainian propaganda in a "softer" way than by way of the usual information warring via news outlets, social media etc.
- To be fair, the first one I found seems to have taken place 2021, thus a full year before the big-scale invasion undertaken by Russian forces.
- The links I found:
- Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2021
- Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2022
- Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2023
- Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2024
- Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2025
- Your concerns were discussed here in 2022 but remain valid, as this promotions cast a weird light of partisanship on Wikipedia when promoting one culture every year over all others. The promotions - of this form, at least - should have been dropped in February 2022 to avoid any impression that Wikipedia takes a) a partisan stand in this war and b) outshining (and by that, diminishing) all other wars and conflicts at the same time without good reason.
- -- Marilyn.hanson (talk) 22:34, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
- I did not mean to imply that no such event had taken place before, but rather that I personally had never seen one before.
- Personally I am wary of any governments influencing the content on Wikipedia, regardless of whether they are currently involved in a war or not. Grassoc Oremaker (talk) 06:17, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Grassoc Oremaker hello!
- 1) The UCDM campaign is organized in cooperation with the Ukrainian Institute and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, that's correct. They mostly support outreach, external promotion, and help build global partnerships. However, they do not make decisions about participants’ contributions or final winners. The final winners are determined based on the final contribution ranking and reviewed by Wikimedia Ukraine, as WMUA works directly with contributors, manages the contest process, and provides organizational and technical support. Articles lists are created and reviewed by Wikimedia Ukraine and Ukrainian Institute. And the prizes are provided by the Ukrainian Institute.
- 2) CN banners are a standard way to promote Wikimedia campaigns globally, and anyone can request it, so we did it as well, and we use this practive since 2021. While this competition is targeting the international audience mostly, this banner may appear on a wide range of articles and pages to ensure visibility to a broad audience. If the specific community doesn't want the banner to appear on their Wikipedia, they can ask to deactivate it there. And in general, other campaign's organizers can also request to set up a banner on their need, of course. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 11:43, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
Only translated?
[edit]I created a new article, but it’s not a translation of an Wp-article in another language. However, points can only be earned for “translated” articles or for improving an existing article. So, does that mean I can’t participate in the contest? - hu:User:Vadaro Vadaro (talk) 15:40, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Vadaro Hello, and thanks for your question! You can absolutely participate. Creating a new article, even if it is not a translation — fully counts in this contest, as there is no requirement that articles must be translated. You can earn points for any new or expanded article, based on the number of bytes added, as well as for substantial improvements and other criteria listed in the rules. New article in my native language.
[edit]I'm trying to write an article in my native language (Brazilian Portuguese) but I'm facing difficulties. I've never published an article before, and the original English article has few reliable sources. Will mine be approved? Apparently, even grammar checkers can't be used; I was flagged for this. Is anyone else in the same situation and can share their experiences with me? Draft:Rock na Ucrânia Thony-Ferro (talk) 14:14, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Thony-Ferro Hello, and thank you for contributing! Many participants are creating or translating articles for the first time. And whether the article is approved depends mainly on Wikipedia’s usual requirements: reliable sources, neutral writing, and sufficient encyclopedic content. If the original English article has limited sourcing, it is a good idea to look for additional reliable sources yourself before publishing.
- Using grammar or translation tools is generally not forbidden, but the final text should be reviewed and edited by you to ensure it reads naturally and follows Wikipedia’s guidelines. Fully automated or poorly reviewed machine translation may be flagged by editors. If you are unsure, you can also work in draft space first and ask other editors for feedback before publishing. Missing Georgian (ka) entries in contest table
[edit]Hello,
I would like to ask why the Georgian (ka) column is not marked for my articles on the contest page. I have created and significantly expanded multiple articles in Georgian Wikipedia, but they do not appear to be reflected in the table.
Could you please check if this is a technical issue or if there is something I might have missed?
Thank you in advance. შალვა მინდაძე 11 (talk) 12:48, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
- @შალვა მინდაძე 11 Hello, and thank you for your contribution! No worries, it may take some time for the system to update the table. If it will not be updates in a few days, please let us know. In the meantime, please make sure that your articles follow the required formatting/template exactly, as incorrect formatting can sometimes prevent the table from updating properly. In any case, your contributions will still be reviewed and counted. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk) 15:24, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
Merging two ukrainian culture items: Q95736217 and Q2462146
[edit]I am recently trying to write the "culture of Ukraine" entry, but found the two entries, that are: culture of Ukraine (d:Q95736217) and Ukrainian culture (d:Q2462146) - Looks like the UCDM campaign uses the former, but what's their difference, exactly? I have moved languages of the Q2462146 item into Q95736217, but we should consider merging these two to prevent confusion. Saimmx (talk) 05:19, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
