English knowledge is not required

Really? How does an Non-English-Speaker get to know about this election? The page is not translated into a single language. The announcements seems to be english only as well, right? Is it some kind of self-deception or is it there to make it look good? I can't imagine working there without english knowledge ist really possible. ...Sicherlich ^Post 14:17, 19 May 2025 (UTC)

"what we can" - Lets look at what "we can". Sounds nice. Lets check how the reality looks like. To work in this team the minimum is to get around the pages containing anything about the Code, right? So the announcments that the election is open: in english. The Election page: in English. Announcements: 3.5 languages (no french, no spanish, no chinese, no arabic). Training; about 7 languages (no french, no spanish, no chinese, no arabic), Cases: 4 languages (some french and arabic, no zh, no es). Activity Reports: no translation at all.
And thats only subpages of the Code of Conduct. If you leave that, its probably even worse. ....
If its really wanted, than there is much more effort needed to make it even slightly possible. To me its, as shown illusionary and far from reality. Kind of feel good approach ...Sicherlich ^Post 15:11, 19 May 2025 (UTC)

Our movement relies on volunteer translators. We unfortunately cannot compel them to appear and translate things. The Foundation doesn't have the capacity for paid translations, and those are often worse than volunteer translations (using the wrong vocabulary, etc.) I don't disagree that the situation is not ideal, but we are really quite limited in what we can do. relies on volunteer translators - yes and no. If its wanted to WMF has enough funds to change that. Its not the poor helpless organisation it was 20 year ago. So yes it does, but not it does not mean it has to be like that.

Hello @User:Sicherlich, I think that Ajraddatz was meaning "step up" and start to translate in your language. I think that if someone wants to help in cross wiki volunteering having a basic knowledge of English is essential (I am the proof that too high a level is not really necessary...) In most of the cases we had so far everybody of us sooner or later had to rely on automatic translation, I think that even with some difficulties (and some patience for the inevitable misunderstandings) this can be done in our internal discussions too. --Civvì (talk) 16:49, 19 May 2025 (UTC)

I'm sure that what he means, but its just keeping up the lie and avoiding the truth. The voluntary translations on Meta do not work. Random pages are translated into random languages. For someone who does not speak english all this is no help at all. Said it already: "stop lying about this. But thats did not happen since decades, so ...

The WMF has the capacity for paid translators, it's awash with money. It doesn't want this, it pretends, that there are enough voluntary translators for the myriads of new pages to translate, which everybody knows is just wishful thinking.

Spend less money on unwanted bling like Flow, Branding, SuperProtect etc. and invest more in the communities. Or just live up to the fact that English is a requirement for working on this level. Grüße vom Sänger ♫^(Reden) 06:13, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi, i think these are three different issues: election page translations, managing non-English U4C requests and English proficiency for working as a group. Imo, we as a group can make different English levels work, as we have had in the past. Also, we have had several cases in non-English languages. Ghilt (talk) 07:40, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

I'd say, bad English is probably a must, like my wind power prof once said: Bad English is the language of science. (or here of the Wikiverse)

But speaking only English (or only one language at all, regardless which) should be an absolute no-go.

Providing translations in at least the 10 biggest languages is a task, the WMF has to ensure. There is no shortage on money, but volunteers can't be drafted to do this, and it has to be done asap. Grüße vom Sänger ♫^(Reden) 07:47, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
