Talk:Upgrade from 1.2 to 1.3

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Has anyone else tried this? I'm thinking of converting my 1.2 setup to 1.3, but I'm not familiar enough with databases to fix a broken database, so I'm a bit worried about doing the conversion without first collecting opinions of others who have done similar work. --Dankelley 00:58, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

This is the nastiest upgrade process I have ever seen. Looks like I am stuck forever at 1.2.6 or starting over. I don't have shell access, and I have never needed to open a chat channel to do an upgrade, whatever that is for. Let alone restart Apache. Are there database changes between 1.2.6 and latest? Can I just reinstall and update the database? Anonymous Coward

Yes, there are database changes. Normally this should be a very straightforward process; if you run the web installer and point it at your existing database, it should make all the necessary changes. (You must have a database user account with the permission to alter the tables and create new tables, naturally. You should already have this if you installed it in the first place.)
You can also apply the changes manually by running the .sql scripts in maintenance/archives. They are generally ordered by date, and should include some explanatory comments on their function.
If you're still having trouble, we'd love to help you but will need more detailed information than knowing that you are stuck. --brion 14:44, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)
The update documentation provided with the 1.3.8 release seems fairly straightforward. I backed up my old wiki database with cPanel, copied over the all the wiki files with myFTP, deleted my old localsettings.php and browsed to the install file. It automatically did the conversions of the database. I didn't have any problems to speak of The upgrade instructions on this content page may be very robust, but I think they give people the impression it is a lot harder than it actually is. --Anonymous Coward 7 Dec 2004
