Becoming a VRT to help get works under free licenses

Hello. I am interested in helping to contact rightsholders in order to get more illustrative images for Wikipedia pages (e.g. video game screencaps and broader materials) under CC licenses. Seeing as the VRT appears to engage in this (awesome work on the Celeste page!), should I apply? Thanks to anyone in advance for their patience and time. @Canned Frootloops: VRT only processes incoming requests. If you are interested in doing outreach, then that's interesting and Wikipedia currently has no precedent for this, but if you have the energy and nerve then I encourage you to do all the cold contacting you enjoy.

The ask you have to make of people is to go through the process of releasing content under open licenses. With User Maddy from Celeste, the copyright owner actually made a Wikimedia account and released their own images themselves. If you can convince anyone to do that, then this is the best way. The next best way is getting them to agree to release media and then write to VRT to talk it through. Unfortunately, it is complicated to learn how to do this, and not for beginners, so since you seem new to this I recommend you doing referrals to VRT but not trying to join VRT.

There is not a particular place to learn how to do VRT tasks, but practicing answering questions at commons:Commons:Village pump/Copyright is probably the single best place to try to learn. Bluerasberry (talk) 15:27, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
