Who organised activities around filling the gender gap[edit]

Making Things Happen - articulating the way forward for women and gender gap.

https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Discussions/Women_and_Gender_gap_:_the_way_forward

Introduction[edit]

The Discussion Room is a space for open and facilitated discussions at Wikimania. Participation of the audience in the session is critical, because there are no speakers, and there is no expert panel!

3 rules are the basis:

  • Focus on YOU. We are interested in discussing and triggering individual action, things people can personally do and change to improve our Wikimedia projects and movement. We trust the discussion can be much more interesting if we do not focus on what others should do ("the others", Wikimedia chapters and Wikimedia Foundation).
  • Be constructive and polite. Disagreements animate discussions and they can allow us to unfold all issues related to a topic. Let's avoid personal attacks, let's consider that we have different backgrounds and let's aim at making everybody comfortable in sharing their legitimate point of view.
  • Be short and on topic. Let's create space for everyone to express his/her opinion.

Objective[edit]

Identify a dedicated communication channel – an internet forum – to unify the stovepipes (or "silos", isolated groups that don't communicate with each other).

creating a (FEM) portal to communicate across different language versions

WikiWomen IRC channel about GenderGap issues and related themes: #wikimedia-gendergap exists according to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC/Channels

link the meta-page on wikidata

have a newsletter derived from the format of "This month in GLAM" newsletter (1 editor responsible for getting people to deliver input)

include social media (twitter, facebook etc.) - more accessible

both a source for people to connect to eachother and also a place for new people to come in (different paths have to point to one place)

Identify common topics to address in the dedicated communication channel (promotion of articles created, editathons, grants; harvesting redlinks cross-wiki; notability; reliable sources; tech tools beyond WIGI (Wikipedia Gender Index); research; tips&tricks)

a dedicated page for gender gap issues in the Wikipedia Signpost (a recommendation)

communication channels to know what funding is available and mentoring for obtaining funding

Telegram (an open source messenger application)

list of dedicated users that can help newcomers (new articles, references etc.) -coaching programme

list of training sessions for techie stuff that are woman friendly

there is an area for notes below... could we take all notes at the same place to avoid redundancy please ? we need you below :)

Starting questions[edit]

  • Who organised activities around filling the gender gap
  • The Gender Gap is the most important gap in our community we have to address

gap is not perceived by the movement potential is lost when half of the population doesn't participate

The Gender Gap is the most important gap in our community we have to address[edit]

Very important but not the most important one On the armenian community, there are as many Women than Men

class, etc.

Note that ofen women do not see there is a problem Sandra thinks it is the most important gap, not only in Wikipedia but in the tech world as well Peter notes that we are missing "half" of the work force

  • Isla - the gender gap is a part of a larger problem with geographies of knowledge, and focusing on women in Africa, allows us to build the knowledge as more balanced from the beginning.
  • There's a huge cultural gap in published and unpublished sources. The gender gap is only one exponent of that.
  • was stated in the strategy plan in 2010 and as a movement we failed to fix. We should decide whether this is still a priority or not (and if so, get some progseek funding etc.
  • this gap gives more light on the other gaps: adressing the gender gap brings knowledge about adressing any kind of gaps. Also workshop usually face the other type of gaps (numeric, age, race ect..)

What can be done ?[edit]

Rosie outlines there is a stove pipe (also known as silos). This means there are many initiatives but not much cross-interactions between each . Difficult to know what are the other projects, in the same language or worse in the other languages.

  • create a page on meta where people can list articles to be translated
  • Roside suggest the page m:FEM
  • someone indicates that word is not appropriate because it is a specific gender identity ?
  • other suggestions of name ?
  • someone mentions that it is more important that Roside coordinate and reach out to people than setting up a page on meta
  • others disagree with that statement
  • someone ask what this portal page on meta would be for exactly ?
    • summarize projects there
  • A newsletter option - like, This month in GLAM. This has been the most successful outreach channel for the GLAM community till now.
  • make sure what ever is done is also on WikiData
  • message recieved from women usergroup who cannot "see" any activity on the gender gap and want it to be raised at Wikimania
  • do we need a new category on WikiData for these efforts?
  • need one starting page (like a portal) that everyone can go to and view what is talked about and the various other pages created - but where? Possibly Meta:Wiki World Women
    • with subpages (facts/figures, grants, learning patterns etc.)
  • portals are difficult to maintain. A better option might be a "women" newsletter (see the This Month in GLAM model) where just a handful people maintain with every project giving short news
    • like a status update...or signpost blog
    • social media: twitter, fb, telegraph, instagram, etc - a "gateway" into the movement
    • there is a gender gap irc channel (ciell should give its name :))
  • would the goal be to reach out to people who are not yet involved ? Or would it be to wikimedians to better communicate. Before starting something, define target and purpose
  • maybe all info should me saved on a central Wikipedin/portal page (information storage) but the communication issues (outgoing information) has to take different channels (twitter - FB page ect)
    • Could be a short page on meta for quick reference then links to other "sources", or also have subpages [what about languages?]

Identify common topics to address in the dedicated communication channel (promotion of articles created, editathons, grants; harvesting redlinks cross-wiki; notability; reliable sources; tech tools beyond WIGI (Wikipedia Gender Index); research; tips&tricks)[edit]

We need communication channels to let people know there are funding (dedicated ?) available at WMF Take this opportunity to create one central place for links to sub-projects, etc ( take our cues from some of the struggles GLAM had in starting out)

  1. list of dedicated users who can help other users (particularly newcomers)
    • users that are new to editing, new to everything but want to help
  • the work we do should make an impact on the decisions of the WMF and other policy makers, and not just be a project that feeds content and builds more female editors. It should count for more.

have dedicated workshops for tech issues specially designed for women

  • Do a (new) inspire campaign on gender gap issue
  • fundiing: make sure that people who care about the gender gap join the committees that are related to grants and money alllocation

Recommendation[edit]

have a gender gap section in each Signpost as editorial policy we need to have a women's conference. Portal, maybe at m:Wiki World Women and see where it goes (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_World_Women ) funds in all chapters that are only dedicated to gender sources Women candidate for FDC (Funds Dissemination Committee) Join committees that dictate/enforce policy/resourcing jobs dedicated to gender related issues in chapters feminization of terms on wikipedia (policies) avoiding disputes on specific content incidents concise & compelling argument on the portal to clearly state why the gender gap is important section to ask for help (notability issue etc. similar to village pump more statistics / figures [but remember recent research on the demotivating effect they can have] Get research groups involved and informed: help with the https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Newsletter to review relevant research (and therefore connect with the authors) Spread the word on social media Imagine and implement international campaigns

Other lists of users[edit]
