Whether or not a Wikipedia template includes a claim from Wikidata can depend on whether or not the Wikidata claim has a reference that's not P143. It sounds to me like this change will lead to edits on Wikidata that change what's shown on Wikipedia because references get changed not anymore appearing on Wikipedia watchlists.
