Talk:Wikimedia CEE Spring 2021/Structure/Cyprus

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

@Seksen iki yüz kırk beş: Would it be possible to create a joint list of all of Cyprus? It would be good not to get into political arguments here, and we already had a Cyprus list in 2015. BR, Braveheart (talk) 18:35, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Braveheart: Thanks for the input. The rationale for creating this list for one side only was twofold: 1) This was a last-minute creation and so I did not have a chance to reach out to any Greek Cypriot Wikipedians to organise this properly in a bicommunal way. Otherwise that would have been my preferred way to do things, and I do hope that we can switch to that next year. 2) As the island itself is bilingual, having a single article list would complicate assessment of contributions on Turkish and Greek Wikipedias - Greek Cypriot topics are underrepresented on Turkish Wikipedia and vice versa. I felt that I had to be mindful of this, again, because this was last minute. If you feel that the name "Northern Cyprus" would potentially trigger political disagreements, more than happy to rename this list to "Turkish Cypriots". --Seksen iki yüz kırk beş (talk) 19:02, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Seksen iki yüz kırk beş: There is no deadline to expand the lists, so you can add articles in the next few days or weeks - as long as you don't remove any articles it's fine :-) That doesn't mean that topics from both parts of Cyprus can't be on the same list, but there are some sensitivities in the region (for example in Ukraine, Georgia, etc.) that make it difficult to have such a list solely focused on the Turkish side of things. So I would really appreciate it if you could create a joint list and slowly complete it within the next month or so with ideally some input from other Wikimedians from Cyprus. I can also help with filling up that list based on the articles present on English Wikipedia. Braveheart (talk) 19:29, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'll ping Cinadon36 here, a Wikipedian from the Greek Cypriot community. I don't personally have an issue with a list for the whole of Cyprus, and would be happy to work on it, but their assistance would be much appreciated. --Seksen iki yüz kırk beş (talk) 19:35, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Braveheart: I've now renamed this. --Seksen iki yüz kırk beş (talk) 19:42, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Merhaba and hello fellow wikians and @Seksen iki yüz kırk beş:, thank you for your ping. I would be delighted to work with you guys to improve cyprus related articles but the truth is I am tottaly unfamiliar with CEE Springs and how they work. If it isn't something too complicated, I 'd like to give it a try though. Pls let me know where and how can I assist any of you! Thanks again! Cheers, Cinadon36 (talk) 20:16, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Seksen iki yüz kırk beş: Great, thank you very much :-) I will look for some interesting articles on en.wikipedia to add to this list. @Cinadon36: Nice to meet you! :-) The front page contains links to English articles of topics that involve Cyprus. The template uses the Wikidata-ItemID (the Qxxxxxx number) and extrapolates which other languages an article is written in and displays that information in the table. That way users from other languages can check which articles could be translated into their language. Braveheart (talk) 23:09, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
