How to participate without surrendering to Google?[edit]

Is there a way to take part in this without surrendering ones privacy to the evil Google? Using Google for anything is excluding anybody with a small amount of privacy consciousness, it#s plain invalid as a venue for our open source movement. @Sänger Anyone can join as an anonymous user. We are keeping an eye at Wikimedia Meet but so far the performance seems to be unreliable for big meetings, as reported by some volunteers who have tried it. Qgil-WMF (talk) 11:06, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Google Meet crash-happy[edit]

Would it be possible to use Zoom for the third set of calls, as is the case for many of the other WMF calls I've done - Google Meets is particularly vulnerable to crashing/freezing for those on less good internet, while Zoom is more friendly and tolerating in this sense. @Nosebagbear I'll check. What this means is that I need to get a premium license in order to run meetings longer than 40 minutes. Not difficult, but I just learned about this little detail last Friday. Qgil-WMF (talk) 21:42, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nosebagbear Hi, after some investigation and some deliberation... I'll say that we are sticking to Google Meet for this next round. I'm not happy about this answer myself. First, I'd need to get a premium account in order to record meetings of more than 40 minutes. This is not a big deal, just one more thing. What worries me more is that we have now a system that works smoothly to coordinate our online meetings and produce all the materials quickly afterward. I hesitate to touch this system for the panel sessions, where our main concerns should be our guests and not tech stuff. I haven't run Zoom meetings before myself (I mean, beyond small chats) and right now in the final sprint of the call for feedback I don't have time to properly check, test, and feel confident about taking a new (for me) system.
I hope you can join the sessions next week without technical difficulties. I also hope that in the next occasion I will have done my homework and I will be able to offer at least a Zoom call. Qgil-WMF (talk) 23:15, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
