Talk:Wikimedia Summit 2019/Thematic, regional, language-specific meetups/LGBT+ Meetup

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

General[edit]

Meet ups could be a useful way of revisiting WM-LGBT+'s organization and status. It's been a few years now that the UG has run as an adhocracy, without the burden of elections or boards, but instead relying on the self-motivation of individual volunteers. This seems to work sufficiently so long as we do not need to hold money (by leaving that to the many Associate allies that can support projects) and have no need to identify or count a "membership". If the organization (and reporting) does get discussed, it is worth keeping in mind that most of our active 'members' will not be there.

A pragmatic agenda item could be to highlight where in the coming year or two, the WM-LGBT+ could become more visible to help coordinate and support global LGBT+ related initiatives to improve the quality of knowledge on our projects about LGBT+ culture, politics and controversy. Wikipedia(s) could be seen as a reliable neutral reference about heated topics like trans women in sport. Perhaps learning from the techniques that WikiprojectMed used, better to help identify and promote the reuse of reliable sources, as a means to tackle the deliberate or accidental use of politically promoted (FakeNews) or commercially promoted sources. This can be more than promoting Wiki-editathons, and a project along these lines to improve guidelines and promote best practices in many languages, could be well received by Wikipedians if approached with the single intention of increasing quality and positively working against bias.

Thanks for organizing a meeting, have fun! -- (talk) 12:57, 12 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
