From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

On y va ? Let's go ?

--Helmoony 20:54, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

--Helmoony 23:51, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Arabic support issues in Wikimedia projects

Hello! Are any of you interested in working on improving Wikipedia's display of Arabic?

http://hexmode.com/2011/04/mediawiki-needs-rtl-developers/

If so, please take a look at that blog entry. And if you know some software developers who would be interested, please consider using translatewiki to translate that blog entry into Arabic — https://translatewiki.net/wiki/User:MarkAHershberger/blog-RTL-Developers-wanted — and distribute it among your friends and networks.

Another software developer working on right-to-left support in MediaWiki (the software Wikipedia runs on) is Amir Aharoni. You can read his request here: https://aharoni.wordpress.com/2011/06/18/palestinian-geeks-and-rtl-bugs/

Thank you. Please let me know if I can help you at all! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation volunteer development coordinator

Yet Another African Chapter!

Am glad that this is another chapter in the pipeline from Africa. We just got approved by the WMF earlier this year as Wikimedia Kenya. In case you need me:) stephenWanjau Talk to Me. Email Me. 16:38, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Some questions from AffCom

Hello, Tunisian wiki[pm]edians! I would like to ask you guys a few questions to have all the relevant information in one place (one-two paragraph summaries or links to other pages are fine), which we use to get to know you better and to have a catalog of all affiliates as we ask all of them a very similar set of questions. These will also be useful if you later decide to apply for chapter or thematic organization status. Please keep in mind that there are no "expected" or wrong answers.

Thank you in advance for your time in answering these questions, which help us get a feel for your group and determine how far along the process towards user group status are you at the moment. Let us know if you need any clarifications. --Maor X (talk) 19:41, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

The Affiliations Committee is looking for new members. The committee's work requires communication with volunteers all over the World, negotiating skills and cultural sensitivity and the ability to understand legal texts. We try to get a healthy mix of different skill sets in our members.

Members are usually selected every twelve months for staggered two-year terms. The applications will be voted on by the current members not seeking re-election, taking into account comments put forward by the committee's members, advisers, WMF staff and board liaisons based on the membership criteria. A final decision will be made by the end of October 2014, with new members expected to join on or around 1 November 2014.

Please read the full call for candidates for more information, membership criteria, and details on how to apply.

Best regards,
Carlos Colina

What about writing about Tunisia ... In Tunsi?

Hello everybody, in Wikimedia TN User Group there are members who are using Arabic, others are using French and there are some who are using English to write about Tunisia. So I was thinking why we don't use Tunisian? Wait! I know the answer, that's because there is no Standard for Tunisian. So I searched for some people who are interested in making that Standard and I found that some already began working on this project.
Today, we've a writing method, a dictionary and writing rules, so the first problem is solved. And I'm thinking in using this method to provide information for Tunisians. You might ask me "We have Arabic, French and English! Why do we need Tunisian?", simply that's because... Take a look on Tunisian students, if your father isn't a Doctor, mostly you don't understand anything you learn, add to that the high (without real numbers) percentage of Cultural Stupidity, I mean, many people can't get the real and the true information, even if he go to Arabic Wikipedia, he needs something in his L1.
Yeah I know, we all hate long introductions, so the important thing here, is searching for Tunisian volunteers to translate Mediawiki to Tunisian, then translating most important articles to Tunisian.
I think that's very easy, and we can find so many non-wikipedians interested and able to do that.
BTW, No, I'm not a hater of Arabic Wikipedia, and I'm always ready to volunteer there, but also, I want every Tunisian to be able to understand what's going on here, in this world!
Now, Why am I writing this again? I want to know if there are any volunteers here.

Bonjour GeekEmad,
Cordialement, Dyolf77 (talk) 14:22, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
That's why we made a "standard writing", we didn't standardize the spelling of words, but just the writing which is important. And this writing method is attached a little to Tunis' dialect, which everyone can understand it (I'm talking about grammar and conjugation rules). Maybe also it's too early for a Tunisian Wikipedia in a method nobody uses in Tunisia? --GeekEmad (talk) 16:53, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
I'm against using writing dialects in general. I strongly believe in the adage "في الإتحاد قوة" and I see that we need to strengthen our native language ARABIC better than distributing our efforts in many branches... Did you see in wikipedia American English or British English or Brasilian Portegees or canadian french ? So why Arabs want that every country has a different langage !!! --Vivaystn (talk) 15:23, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
I respect your view, but I see that you made a small problem right there, when you asked why we don't have Canadian Frenc Wikipedia for example. Because... the difference between Tunisian and MSA is bigger than the difference between Canadian French and French, How? Well, you can find words from different origins in Tunisian, some words from Arabic have another meaning in Tunisian, and of course don't forget the Berber substrate, it's very important. So simply, if an Arab who born speaking MSA (I know, that's not happening) he can't communicate with a Tunisian who born speaking Tunsi (not Arabic). This is a reality. So, I hope we discuss this subject without talking about Dialect or Language. --GeekEmad (talk) 16:53, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Hello GeekEmad,
Your approach to standardize a language looks interesting but I see many issues that prevent the creation of a Wikipedia in Tunisian:
  • Today, we've a writing method, a dictionary and writing rules, so the first problem is solved: Well, has this been published anywhere or is this only in the hands of a few people? Is this recognized by institutions such as the ministries of education and culture? You might understand that creating a method and rules on your own has not much value if nobody recognizes and uses them.
A very good point, thanks for talking about it. Yes, that's another problem, nobody use it and nobody recognize the writing method. --GeekEmad (talk) 16:53, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I'm thinking in using this method to provide information for Tunisians: What would be the benefit of having an encyclopedia that only Tunisians can read? It's not as if Tunisians can't write and read in any other language.
Why do we need a Wikipedia in Maltese? They can use English Wikipedia? I think the most important is writing in your mother tongue, even if you can read in all languages of the world, To be realistic, me, for example, I can fully understand something only if it's in my Language. --GeekEmad (talk) 16:53, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Mostly you don't understand anything you learn, add to that the high (without real numbers) percentage of Cultural Stupidity, I mean, many people can't get the real and the true information, even if he go to Arabic Wikipedia, he needs something in his L1: I won't comment on such statements which are insulting and do not rely on any verifiable fact. If this was true, then there would not be a need for a Tunisian Wikipedia but, as Dyolf77 suggests, for local versions as there is no standard (except the one you seem willing to impose).
Sorry. --GeekEmad (talk) 16:53, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
At the end, I agree with Vivaystn's statement about local versions of Wikipedia. I use expressions that are specific to Swiss French, that does not mean I can't read and write Standard French. I expect the same for Tunisians. Moumou82 (talk) 19:36, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
The same I said to him goes for you, the relation between Swiss French and Standard French is not like the one between Tunisian and French. Thanks. --GeekEmad (talk) 16:53, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

I can understand the real problem now:

  • Nobody is using this standard method
  • We don't need a Tunisian Wikipedia right now, so the method can be use to translate movies and normal articles.

eLearning Africa Conference (May 20-22, Addis Ababa)

Hello WMTN! I just came across a regional conference that seems relevant for you and community members. The 10th annual eLearning Africa conference will be hosted this year in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the African Union HQ. I'm in the process of seeing if there's space for any involvement from the Wikipedia Education Program team, be it a conference session or pre-conference workshop. Could also be an opportunity to highlight some of the work you do as well or learn what others are doing in the region! Please share onwards as appropriate :) Tighe Flanagan (WMF) (talk) 17:58, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Earth 2015 in Tunisia

This is a message from the 2015 Wikimedia Foundation Elections Committee. Translations are available.

Greetings,

I am pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 Wikimedia Foundation Elections. This year the Board and the FDC Staff are looking for a diverse set of candidates from regions and projects that are traditionally under-represented on the board and in the movement as well as candidates with experience in technology, product or finance. To this end they have published letters describing what they think is needed and, recognizing that those who know the community the best are the community themselves, the election committee is accepting nominations for community members you think should run and will reach out to those nominated to provide them with information about the job and the election process.

This year, elections are being held for the following roles:

Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is the decision-making body that is ultimately responsible for the long term sustainability of the Foundation, so we value wide input into its selection. There are three positions being filled. More information about this role can be found at the board elections page.

Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC)
The Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) makes recommendations about how to allocate Wikimedia movement funds to eligible entities. There are five positions being filled. More information about this role can be found at the FDC elections page.

Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) Ombud
The FDC Ombud receives complaints and feedback about the FDC process, investigates complaints at the request of the Board of Trustees, and summarizes the investigations and feedback for the Board of Trustees on an annual basis. One position is being filled. More information about this role can be found at the FDC Ombudsperson elections page.

The candidacy submission phase lasts from 00:00 UTC April 20 to 23:59 UTC May 5 for the Board and from 00:00 UTCApril 20 to 23:59 UTC April 30 for the FDC and FDC Ombudsperson. This year, we are accepting both self-nominations and nominations of others. More information on this election and the nomination process can be found on the 2015 Wikimedia elections page on Meta-Wiki.

Please feel free to post a note about the election on your project's village pump. Any questions related to the election can be posted on the talk page on Meta, or sent to the election committee's mailing list, board-elections -at- wikimedia.org
