User group news
  • On 25th April 2026, we held our April 2026 Monthly Meetup from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm IST. The agenda for the meeting was shared and everyone was welcomed. A total of 6 community members participated in the meeting and discussions.
    • Ranjithsiji and Adithyak shared updates from the Wikisource Summit 2026, which was organized at Calicut University. Participants from Malayalam, Tamil and Tulu community members also attended the two-day event.
    • Jinoy shared updates about the Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026 campaign organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Ukraine in New Delhi and communities in India. 47 people joined and contributed during the campaign period in India
    • Ranjithsiji and Sreekrishnan shared the updates about the ongoing Malayalam Wikivoyage activities and improvements. Discussed the need for further enhancements and issues.
    • Athul shared the updates about closure of Wikimedians of Kerala Anniversary Programme and submission of final report.
    • Ranjithsiji shared the Wikivoyage Day plan announced by Sreekrishnan. Plans to organize activities were discussed.
    • Vijayanrajapuram shared plans to create school related pages on Wikipedia. Athul and Ranjith shared their thoughs on doing follow up activies.
    • Jinoy and Athul shared the updates about the WikiConference India 2026 which is going to happen in Kochi. Around 400+ applications have been received for scholarships and the team is currently reviewing the applications.
      • For those who missed applying for the scholarship the self funded registration will be opened.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates about the Wiki Loves Theyyam 2026 which started on March 17 and will end on May 17.
    • Jinoy shared and invited the community members to share the stories, community highlights and activities from across South Asia to WikiDhara - The echoes from South Asia. (read more...)

Wikimedians of Kerala - May 2026 Newsletter

This is the Wikimedians of Kerala UG's 28th newsletter.

Updates / Discussions
  • On 25th May 2026, we held our May 2026 Monthly Meetup from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm IST. The agenda for the meeting was shared and everyone was welcomed. 10 community members participated in the meeting and discussions.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates about Wiki Loves Theyyam 2026, which was conducted as a pilot project from 17 April to 17 May 2026. Around 650 images were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by 16 contributors. Discussions were held on organizing follow-up activities closer to the Theyyam season.
    • Jinoy shared updates from Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2026 in India, organized in collaboration with Wikimedia communities and partner organizations.
      • Around 45 participants took part in the campaign by creating 71 new pages and improving around 327 pages across Wikimedia projects. An offline Wikipedia editing workshop was organised at Embassy of Ukraine, New Delhi along with a cultural activity and continued the online campaign till the end of April.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates from Wikisource Summit 2026, organized at the University of Calicut. A total of 18 participants attended the event, including contributors from other language communities. Discussions focused on collaboration and technical improvements for Wikisource projects.
    • Jinoy shared updates about WikiConference India 2026. The conference theme has been announced. The theme for WCI 2026 is "Reimagining the Knowledge Commons" - Community Leadership in an Evolving Wikimedia Ecosystem.
    • Ranjithsiji shared plans for a Wiki Loves Schools edit-a-thon, aimed at creating and improving school-related articles using information collected through the SchoolWiki project and previous photography campaigns.
    • Ranjithsiji announced preparations for Wiki Loves Earth India 2026, which is planned to begin on 1 July 2026. Community members were encouraged to participate and help document natural heritage sites across India.
    • Jinoy and Ranjith shared updates from Wikimedia Hackathon 2026 in Milan. The GLUES tool (Global Wikimedia User Information and Statistics) was developed and improved during the hackathon and was presented during the event. The tool provides a centralized dashboard for Wikimedia contributor information and receives valuable feedback from participants across multiple communities. Further enhancements to the tool were discussed.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates about Coordinate Me 2026, an international Wikidata campaign focused on improving geographic coordinates of Wikidata items. Community members were encouraged to participate before the campaign concluded at the end of May.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates on the Malayalam Wikivoyage initiative. Monthly community meetings have been held regularly over the past three months. An analysis tool named Inkpen has been developed and support was requested for the Malayalam Wikivoyage approval proposal.
    • Community members also discussed the ongoing digitization of M. P. Parameswaran's works, potential collaborations with DC Books for bibliographic data sharing, plans for Kerala Cultural Month, the Women in Red tool developed by Netha Hussain for identifying missing articles, improvements to mobile navigation templates.
    • Ranjith and Jinoy shared an update received on Village pump of Malayalam Wikipedia and to User group's email regarding the participation in the Abstract Wikipedia pilot project. (read more...)

Events & activities
  • On-going events & activities by User Group
    • Wiki Loves Earth 2026: Wiki Loves Earth India is an international photographic campaign and We are organizing it in India. More than four thousand files uploaded into this campaign. The campaign will end on 31st July 2026.
    • Wikiwomen Camp Kerala 2026: Wikiwomen Camp aims to bring together women who are active contributors to the Wikimedia movement. 23 editors participated in this two day camp at Kozhikode.
    • Wikimedia Technical Workshop 2026 at C-SiS CUSAT : We organized a Wikimedia technical workshop in collaboration with Centre for Science in Society (C-SiS), Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi, Kerala. 20 students from various colleges participated in this event. We started developing some tools with the help of participants.
    • Kerala Culture Month 2026 As part of Wiki Conference India 2026 we co-organized a writing campaign as a pre conference activity. The campaign started on 15th July 2026 and will end on 15th August 2026.

We are excited to announce Kerala Culture Month 2026, a collaborative campaign launched in conjunction with WikiConference India 2026. This initiative aims to expand and enhance content about Kerala across all Wikimedia projects, creating a comprehensive, open-access knowledge base.

Campaign Focus:

  • Expand Wikipedia articles about Kerala in multiple languages
  • Improve content quality with citations, images, and comprehensive information
  • Populate Wikimedia Commons with freely licensed Kerala media
  • Enrich Wikidata with structured information about Kerala-related topics
