This is already implemented on Wikidata
[edit]People can create new items for websites there. If there are missing properties to better classify their contents, you could propose them there. You can query them using sparql. I don't think if this was made a separate project that many would contribute to it or use it. Prototyperspective (talk) 19:13, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
- That's a very fair point, but I'm mainly worried about the impact this could have to Wikidata since there's a potential for millions to a billion new entries that could keep dominating the Recent Changes of that project... It wouldn't hurt to consult with the community if they would be willing to accept this, though. Luk3 (talk) 15:21, 25 March 2025 (UTC)
- There's also the potential for millions of book items or millions of study items yet these are included in Wikidata. People are not checking the recent changes and it makes no sense to worry about that page. Yes, it surely should be discussed but you could already do that with the things available on Wikidata like properties that can be used for websites – a massive import would need to be discussed. Also that there's a potential for so many items, doesn't mean people would write these to your proposed new project – Wikidata has a larger scope and just quite few contributors so I wouldn't expect that project to be more active. An issue may be notability of websites but I just think Wikidata would be the most feasible most realistic-pragmatic to get this done at least for nonsmall or otherwise notable websites like 9to5Linux (Q106542314) etc. There's also lists of them based on sparql queries, see e.g. d:Wikidata:List of StackExchange sites. Some effort to import data on more websites would be good and you could ask about it or propose things / collaborate with WikiProject Websites there. - The issue I see is that a) how to add so many items b) the same problems that exist in Wikidata would also exist there or not? It's having issues with scalability. Also related: Common Crawl. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:19, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Prototyperspective: I think one advantage in this system is that the owners of the websites could be incentivized to keep their websites indexed and with accurate information. Just like with every Wikimedia project, we would have to operate on best efforts. Luk3 (talk) 13:13, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Prototyperspective: Yes, you have valid points. But I think one big foundation of Wikidata is the notability policy with would block a ton of websites (for example, a lot of blogs and forums) from being added to Wikidata since they have no matching article on Wikipedia or not needed by any other existing items. With that in mind, there could be some discussion with Wikidata on whether this could be an type of project that could expand the boundaries of the site. 9to5Linux (Q106542314) is an great example of an item that already exists there, but what if we wanted to also have items for every single article from that website? I think there are overlaps with Wikidata but Wikindex could expand it, allowing for queries for articles about an specific distribution of Linux under an specific timeframe, for example.
